When Did A Game First...

Agreed, Legend of Zelda:Orcarina Of Time was another.
Just the whole game....marvelous...

I remember also believing that Donkey Kong Country was actual 3D and 64bit graphics. <_<

I said it before and I'll say it once more....

Turrican on my trusty C64 - utterly gobsmacked me - I mean,.. look at that multidirectional scrolling!!

half life.

jus walking around the tram at the start and the sound coming from speakers in the tram. the further away you went from it the quieter it got. and nice set pieces.

The first game was Leisure Suit Larry. I played it when I was about 6 and loved the fact I could type English in and the guy would do what I told him to, however lewd.

Last game was Far Cry. Emerge from a claustrophoic, Doom 3-quality interior to a luscious forest, packed with dense fog and treetop platforms connected with bridges. All around you soldiers are shooting loose research specimens, jeeps are driving in and unpacking with gunners, and in the distance you can see dense forests and cliff-top research-buildings. It was just an awe-inspiring sight. Similarly when you play the Fort (demo) level and look up to the satellite and release that it's not part of the background, but rather where you'll end up at the end. Get up there, look down over the entire island and see where you started. Amazing.
I was considering buying that is it good. It looks bloody amazing. :D

Many games have made my jaw drop over the years but the ones that stick in my mind are:

Doom on the PC
When it first came out on the PC I had seen nothing like this. Up until this point I though PC's were weak at games and I preferred my Amiga by far.

Mario 64 on the N64
The analogue controls and the huge 3d worlds blew me away. I was never particularily good at the game but I still recognised it for the genious it was.

GTA III on the PS2
The size of the cities and the freedom to roam it and butcher anything that moved was a real shock. Vice City is much better but it just built on GTA III so it blew me away less.

Frontier on the Amiga
It was buggy as hell and alot of people hated it but I fell in love with it. Being able to land on the planets and buy other ships was every Elite fans dream.

Shenmue on the Dreamcast
Virtua Figher style combat combined with an RPG? Superb stuff. Full screen 60Hz mode still looks awesome today IMO.

Ant Attack on the ZX Spectrum
Chose your gender (er male please) and then explore a 3d world and rescue the damsel in distress (or bloke if you chose to be a woman). The ability to change camera angles impressed me and I still remember the game fondly.

I'm going to shut up now as I've thought of loads more games. :)

Apologies for spellings. :(

agreed with GTA III entirely. I had no previous knowledge of this game (except say, early magazine shots) which paid off a lot.

Half-life! Ahh yes. I absolutely loved the scripted events, and how there was no *actual* chapters or written story to read and progress. Army AI surprised me alot.
However, the background story, hell, the whole half-life story left me in the dark. Anybody who has explanation of what it was about? Opposing Force seemed to conflict with original half-life story, as you found the army *grunts at least* weren't sent in to kill the scientists, and had no knowledge of the mission. any hoo...

4 player goldeneye was also a real eye-opener. genius stuff.
As you can see I was born into the snes generation and missed all earlier systems, so that's why N64 has such a big contribution on my behalf.

first (i can remember) - Shadow of the beast on the amiga.

most recent - Zelda windwaker, that fire temple boss!!! you cant deny it was incredible.

Oh and also the Doom 3 beta. (still does now 2 years later)

goldeneye on the n64...we had a thanksgiving get-together-thing (not sure if it was leftovers or what...) and my cousins brought their n64...i was soooo amazed by it...then later that year (i think it was...) my uncle bought us a playstation...i think i was about 7 when i was playing die hard without the lightgun from the demo disc  all that blood :D

Damn I forgot about that one! The music was haunting as well. There's a level in Lemmings (another Psygnosis published game) that pays homage to it.
