i am really close...

the past few months i have been searching for sum cheap and small leds...but, i decided to use a cold cathode light. i think i may have found the perfect one. i fanyone has been on the scene for a while you may remember my diy floodlight mod...i wanted to make a guide for that but i have been busy...i am going to use the cold cathode from a gameboy advance floodlight and stick it in my gp32 along with a light guide to light the screen! i the battery life wont be nearly as good as it would if i were using leds...but it will be easier for my to put in and a lot brighter...MAYBE even comparable to the BLU...maybe...

??? does the BLU have a confirmed release?
noooo, i was just saying, since it doesn't use leds to light the screen (thats how the flu works) and it will use a cold cathode, it MAY be comparable to the blu... but, it ISN'T a blu, it is adiy flu... blu=BACKlight unit FLU=FRONT light unit...sheesh...

Love the idea of a DIY FLU. Have you considered putting it up on Freewebs webspace? 100 mb free, no ads whatsoever. And I have to agree. Yes, Homestarrunner is awesome.

Wicked, a DIY Flu guide, sounds great!
hold on, i MIGHT make a guide...these things are a bitch to make...i used broken lcds from ipaqs to harvest the fronlights from...and had to cut them down (i actually sanded...) to fit in the gp32....and that wasn't easy...PLUS out of the 10 busted lcds i got only 1 light guide wasn't damaged enuff to be unusable....it is NOT easy...if i get enough requests i may make a guide...but, i would like some donations as this wasn't easy to do...if i make the guide that is...

hehe, knew I'd get that response :p
don't get me wrong, i would LOVE to bring front lights to the masses, i even called a couple companies but they just told me to pissoff (maybe worded a little differently ;) ) but, its just too easy to screw up, and the lcds aren't easy to get ahold of either...if there was enough interest i would make a guide...BUT, i would need another set of lcds as i don't have many pics (just the ones from the old thread, and a lot has been done since then...) so i could make the guide...there is a guy on ebay that i got these displays from and he still has a few auctions...hmmmm (for the same model of lcd, broken...)

and, i should have a floodlight soon, i don't know what happened to the other ones...but, it will be AWSOME when it is done, probobly brighter than an FLU...

Hey, where did you say you picked up the light guide? From a broken parts dealer or what? I have been in search for light guides that size for a while. By the way, if you need small surface mount LEDs, http://www.ultraleds.com/ has them, they're the same as all the LEDs used for regular frontlight systems.

no, i decided i don't want to use leds... i got the light guides from broken lcds that i bought off of ebay... you COULD try a compaq repair center near you, or call them and tell em that if they have any busted lcds you would be happy to take them off of their hands ;) (thats how i got an arcade cabinet for FREE :) )

1 more thing....this is a HUUUUGGGEEEEE MAYBE, my mom is thinking of getting a laser engraver...what does this mean? it means that i may be able to cut the TINY grooves in a pice of plexi nescessary to guide the light...but this is a gigantic maybe because i'm not sure if it will work even if we do get one...so don't go posting rumors about kits!!! or i will personally flame the ever loving shit out of you!!!!!

I got drunk once and arranged to purchase a dead arcade cabinet for £50. When I sobered up I realised I lived in an upstairs flat with no space for an arcade machine! :D

rotfl!!! that is funny stufff... yeah, when i got my arcade my dad decided that he didn't want it in my room, so he decided to move it down stairs, and he didn't stop there, he moved it across SEVERAL rooms and into what we call my "nerdery" (where projects go...) then to add to that, when it was working i had to take it apart and have people help me carry it UP the stairs and into my room...that sucked....

edited because of a typo...damn, i should learn how to type...

Are the light guides glued to the LCD panels, cos I scratched mine trying to remove a small speck of dust (Yes I know it's ironic). If I could find a replacement I would be chuffed.

Surely there must be a company who makes the light guides. The guys who made the afterburner kit weren't a big company, so they must have found a supplier.
