Well, you won`t get any games that will graphically rock your world, but this sweet little handheld has awesome power. If you like retro gaming and want a handheld that can not only emulate your favourite games, but also play movies, display text and images and has a host of nice non-commercial games, go for it. Yes, then this handheld is worth it.

Anyway, what did you expect people to tell you if you ask something like this on a GP32-Board? ;)

give this thread some time, there is usually 2 people, dont' remember who, that will say Don't buy a GP, get a Zodiac

The GP32 was worth it 14 months ago when it only really had decent SMS emulation, ScummVM, and moviepark. Oh, and plusIV. And an early bit of PCE (that emu is no longer in existence though - or at least, no longer in use, since GPEngine came out almost exactly a year ago). And GB/C. And early versions of Doom and Heretic ( ? ).

Now its got a LOT more stuff; the question isn't really whether its worth it but whether there is going to be something that's *more* worth it in the near future. For my needs, that is unlikely (at least, probably a year or so before the Zodiac catches up, I suspect, and then there's the PSP which *may* get a homebrew scene eventually that's some good). However, alternatives are becoming more viable - so its really a question of whether you wait and go for something better, which may or may not come out, or if you take the plunge and head for the GP32.

You'll love what it can do, but more and more people (mostly those who are migrating to other systems slowly) are beginning to dislike what it can't. Which is what you want to avoid, since its fairly expensive if you find yourself feeling that way.

EDIT: I'm NOT saying "don't buy a GP, get a Zodiac though"; the GP32 rawks! Zodiac has the potential to do so in the future in a way the GP couldn't, but at the moment, and for a fair while I suspect, it won't.

If your a retro gamer, it's most definetly worth it. If you want to listen to MP3/OGGS/MODS/SIDS or watch movies, it's worth it. And if you love Doom, and it's extra wads, it's worth it. If you want 3d visuals and/or PDA functions- get a Zodiac (if you are in the UK, the exchange rate makes the zodiac under £200).

Personally, the zodiac isn't that much more powerfull than my GP to be worth the upgrade. A measly 34MHZ (my GP can do 166). Until something at least double the speed of my GP comes out, I won't even bother looking until the PSP comes out.

Dont buy it expecting to relive the 16bit glory days perfectly, a lot of the Emulators for that generation have problems and fixes for them are either a long way off or not comming. 8bit games seem almost perfect though and its a great movie player once you get videos encoded for it!

200 dollars for a FLU gp32 with removable media is better than 400+ for a lyra video jukebox.

The GP32 is brilliant for just pure emulation, at the moment I play it more then anything else in my rooms even for games like Day of the Tentacle :p

It can play DivX, mp3, ogg and even has a decent text reader...

The best part is that most of the stuff is free or really cheap which I think is very good since there are no more ongoing costs in owning one. :)

I think it's worth it... the main rival for gp32, BTW *isn't* the Zodiac... It's a GBA with flash linker...
I don't think a GBA with flash linker can touch a GP for emulation, or video or MP3, or PC ports....unless you mean pirating GBA games? If you do, I'm not very impressed- considering i'm a console developer, taking the hard earned bread right out of my mouth ;P
