Gamespy

whats really really sad, is that the N-Gage is number 9, its not even a dead system yet and its already being considered dead and a failure. I'm not really suprised, its just funny.

ok, after reading the entire article, i feel that the list is really not credible, first of all, it says the N-Gage is the only system on the list still in production. Ummm, Gamepark just made 800 more units for GBax and Lik sang, its not mass production, but its still production, also, the GameGear was around for almost 7 years, I wouldn't call that a failure. Thats longer than the normal life span of a system.

if they had said that GP32 was a great system why would thet put it in the dead section....?
this would be strange to put a cool handheld in a dead section thats why they are not talking about all the specs
GP32 isnt dead....just unknown by too much

see you ;)

the poll wasn't for top 10 dead hand helds, its top 10 that didn't make it mainstream and had short life spans, but GameGear had a great run and shouldn't be a part of this poll, there are still games being made for the Lynx, so if it was dead systems, the Lynx wouldn't be a part of the poll. I don't feel the GP32 and Wonderswan should be included in this poll, because these 2 weren't released in the US, all the other systems were.

These articles on GameSpy are not credible. I do not feel like hardcore. I am just average GP32 user who likes GP32 homebrew/commercial games/emulators etc. And great people around here of course :)

To be honest... GameSpy might have a lot of Pictures, Demofiles and stuff, but they have no idea what they're talking about. Dead Systems or Systems that never made it?

Just to name a few (from my point of view here in Germany):

- GameGear
This one was quite popular and while Nintendo fought with their GB, the GG was a real cool alternative. Okay, it was more expensive and it ate more batteries, but it had a color display which Nintendo didn't use until recently with the GBA SP. And even more: the first handheld with a TV unit! Think about that.

- The Nomad
Well cool... a Handeld of the Genesis. Even though Germany didn't even see most of the handhelds, we had it in our gamestores - imported of course. It didn't make it because of two things again: Price and Batteries. It is indeed a very cool engine. A bit heavy but cool.

- NEC
Well, cool TurboGrafX Handheld. The first time I saw it here in germany I thought "woha... another gameboy but in color? I was so mistaken a couple of years later after I discovered the game scene. It didn't make it because it didn't even hit the market.

- Lynx:
Was cool. Only bad thing: too less games. but it was sold in Germany.

- WonderSwan
WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT?! The WS was even planned for a worldwide release. Unfortunately they didn't calculate the competitors of Nintendo with their GBA and the NeoGeo Pocket. But still this Handheld was the first with the idea to play games "top down", like MegaMan in some Levels. It wasn't just a friggin "Squaresoft" engine. A pity that it never went out of "Nippon" officially. The price for it, even imported, was almost the same as a brand new GBA btw.

- N-Gage:
Woha cool... personally I still think that the Nokia N-Gage is no handheld. It's just a cell phone with "gaming functions" and "DivX" player. Thanks a lot. Without that, most of those cell phones on the marked wouldn't even sell themselves anymore. "What? Is has no cam in it?" "No" "Okies thanks, I go to another store/service provider".

- NeoGeo Pocket
Even here, WTF are they talking about. The NeoGeo was and is still the most promising handheld. Even some games are still made for it. it's like the real NeoGeo - expensive, but the best 2D games you've ever seen. The Idea from Sega to use it as "Handheld Unit" for the DC like the GBA for the GC was nice though, but it didn't make it. A pity somehow. It was a great competitor to Nintendo. Until SNK was forced to give up their firm.

- GP32:
Yeah right, because it is a 2 year old handheld that was built in Korea, it's a dead engine. (woohoo... Korea the evil land!) I've seen it often, but really got in touch with it just a couple of weeks ago and now I own one too. Korea only needs one thing: More games. Then it's a really dangerous enemy to Nintendo. Not only because of the better versatility of the GP32. But I've seen games that are real killers (like Ragnarök, then a Valkyrie Profile Clone where I forgot the name, mostly RPGs!)

All in all:
If GameSpy would at least judge handhelds that were sold worldwide, I wouldn't say anything against it. But this was just plain nonsense what they were talking about. Not to mention that they were focused on their "lil country america" only, and nothing else. Hell dammit! You can't throw out complete Japan and Europe. Nothing against america, but this was just narrow minded - but we Europeans are used to that. :(

Since its release, the GP32's open development environment and relatively powerful hardware have fostered the creation of a huge homebrew community, and all sorts of interesting projects are landing on the machine. From doujinshi (fan-made) shooters to the LucasArts game emulator SCUMM VM, the GP32 has a little something for any ultra-hardcore game fan.

The authors acknowledge that the community is there and that many third party apps exist. Unfortunately the aim of their article is not to sell you a GP32, so the clock speed will not be listed at 167 MHz or any console emulators mentioned. Probably best to shoot them off an e-mail so they do their research better next time.

also let them know the N-Gage was not the only system still in production on the list, the GP32 is still in production.

If there is one thing that Gamespy is renowned of, it's bullshit. I'm still angry at them for calling Donkey Kong Country a crappy game that only rides on it now-dated pre-rendered graphics.

Gp32 is #1 in my book! Wonderswan seems awesome too! I'll have to pick up a wsc eventually ^^.
Well, 4th is ok I guess, but they could've done better at showing its uberness...

They seem to list every system except for the gameboys.... I guess because thats the best selling system and there haven't been that many handheld consoles
