Tempted to get GP32 but...

I only recently discovered the Gamepark 32 and I haven't been able to sleep properly since. I'm gonna get a big fat cash injection this Christmas and am ready and willing to get a GP32. With all it's cool features I'm mostly drawn to the idea of a portable SNES.

However......

I'm wondering how do you play SNES when it's short of two buttons? And any other game system with more than four buttons?

The new SNES emulator has a very good solution: pressing the select-button on the GP changes the function of the start, A and B button:
Normally A=A, B=B, and start=start but after pressing select A=X, B=Y, and start=select (Just to describe how it works, the button-mapping is probably different). Pressing select again changes it around again.
This system actually works pretty good (much better then I expected).

Ah-hah. I knew it would be some kind of button shift system.

But then that leaves the question of what you do when you need to press select.

Nah not really. Whoever needed to press select in a snes game?

Can you change the configuration to make the shoulder buttons X and Y? Some of the games I'm after use all four "thumb" buttons without making use of the shoulder buttons.

Very important... can you do save states?

yes, you can change the shoulder buttons to whichever buttons you want. I personally tend to use the shoulder buttons for x and y.

You can also use the shift technique to allow you to make the GP32 start button, a SNES select button for those rare games you might need it (think Donkey Kong).

And, YES :) , you can do save states with this new emulator....... they work very nicely and are even zipped save stated so they save room.

all snes emus up to now are not full speed when sound is on.
If you are really ok to play snes games in slow motion, get a gp32 now. If you hope
for full speed, wait until such an emu is out. It might well never come to
existence.

Rather count on the emus which are out there and at full speed and decide
on that wether you need a gp32.

Well I've been seeing all this talk abut the GP32's "great potential" and some people have even said one day it could emulate GBA perfectly. Now it's a question of faith. Do you guys believe in the potetial of GP32?

I'm pretty sure when the ASM core is in opensnes it will be full speed with sound (maybe frame skip 1, i don't mind about that kind of thing)

You know if you turn off some layers in mario 4 for example you can increase the speed by quite a lot with sound.

If you're thinking of getting a gp, the divx and ogg players are really going to persuade you. They run a treat. The divx player can be overclocked for smoother playback at higher frames per second/bitrate and yoyo's ogg player has much better features than the last one. GPEngine is one of the best emulators I've ever seen. Especially for a handheld. Hope that's helped! Jace

That certainly does entice me. My question is really naive and uninformed though. Will the GP32 ever perfectly emulate the GBA? Just give me your thoughts.

Nope, never.

Nope. I dont think so. look how long its taken just to get a snes emu that looks like it might be approaching full speed one day, and thats only 16 bit. The gba is 32 bit, along with the extra hardware. perhaps if someone coded the whole thing from scratch in asm i suppose, but thats not gona happen.

Okay guys. I know this is one hell of a bump but I figured it was better than making anew topic about the same thing.

Yeah. It's five months later and I still haven't made up my mind. I've since been looking for GP32 again and am seeing that they are all running out of stock and that they are making a new BLU. When is that coming out? Will it have more features (ie: thumb buttons)

Hey...I'm also in the market for a GP32 after finally growing a *little* tired of my NGPC. I'm mostly interested in the emulators, but also the movie and MP3 playback. Above all, the thing that really attracts me to the GP32 is the active community that surrounds and supports it. With a little luck and a lot of love, hopefully the GP32 will never be forgotten. Well...not for a long while yet, anyway :)

A question for those of you who own both an NGPC and a GP32 - how does the hardware compare? Not the graphical capabilities but the physical casing, button layout, screen quality etc. One of the main reasons I'm not buying a GBA is horrible design of the hardware itself - BOTH designs feel uncomfatable in your hands, the buttons are awkward to press, the d-pad is plain useless and the screen...the less said the better!

I'd go and give it a try myself...but this isn't exactly the kind of thing you see down at your local Game!

I had a NGPC.. The stick on the NGPC is better IMO.. although everything else is better on the GP32 :D
Cool, just as long as it's somewhere near the quality of the NGPC, I'm more than happy :)

Just to clarify - is the standard, non FLU screen comparable?

I have a FLU GP32 and a NGPC. I used to think the NGPC had a pretty clear screen but after playing the GP32 I feel like I'm blind when playing the NGPC (or maybe that's my age). You can play the FLU anywhere at anytime and that's great.

The NGPC feels like better quality, the stick and buttons are better and it's easier to clean. The GP32 does feel good in your hands (almost like a good gamepad), all buttons are good, stick could be better. What bothers me most about the GP32 is the screencover: it would have been better if it was flat and more like a part of the case (so it would be easier to clean it) with a FLU dust gets annoying real fast.
