Im looking at buying a GP32 and i was wondering - is the movie player aspect of it anyting more than a gimmick. surely a film such as lord of the rings (or even a much shorter one) would not fit the limitations of the storage medium (128mb). i mean an episode of the simpsons maybe but surely a film cant fit on there.

please dont flame me as i know absolutely nothing about bitrates and divX encoding ect. I just know that the 1st part of lotr 2 towers is about 600+ mb on my computer at home.

Well i have matrix rEloaded 100mb,
Finding Nemo 98mb
and Empire strikes back 100mb...

You hahve to encode them properly but they do fit..

u have to convert the movie first. (with virtual dub)

u have to keep in mind that the movie has a resolution of 320*240 and so u save alot of space.

quality is the next issue.
an ep of simpson should be 15 to 30 megs big (depending on quality)
a whole movie is up to 180 megs big. if u want nicer quality u can split it and put it on two smc.

just how tricky is the conversion process, i tried some dvd rippers before (over a year ago) and the results were not great. Is there any way to find them at the correct resolution off file sharing programs such as kazaa???

conversion is realy easy.

u use the prog virtual dub, make some settings.
(if u don't want to or are not able to there is preset downloadable)
add the movie. convert. ready!

easier than dvd ripping!

there is a guide here guide

compression is hard at first, but it only takes once or twice till you get it. also i rip dvd's a lot because of my slow internet, and I get GREAT results. :D

If you use a P2P (and I ain't supporting any of this kind of action) such as edonkey or winMX and you pop in GP32, ignore all of the warez stuff and look for movie titles and you will find some pre encoded for GPcinema (some of the older ones for movie park) Ok so it limits what you can watch to what's there but hey at least it give you a preview.

ok cool - one last question: whats the framerate like??? anything less than 24 will look jerky surely.

Well seeing as the old player Moviepark had a Max of 10fps and it looked fine (remember the refresh of the LCD blurs the frames together and smoothens it out) GPcinema with frame rates as High as 24fps is perfect. However increasing the framerate this high will of course require overclocking, which, is safe but drains battery power faster. Also the higher amount of frames you encode your movie with the larger the file will be, limiting your movie size some what.

Yeah, when I first read that Movie Park is 10 fps (GPcinema is currently the only and newest player and runs at 15 fps) I thought it would look horrible. Later that day I encoded a video on my computer set to MoviePark settings and it looked horrible, everyone told me that it'll look perfect on the actual gp32, so I bought MoviePark and they were right. It looked perfect, and becaues of the lcd screen, there wasn't any jerkiness. Then when I tried GPcinema (15 fps) it looked even better.

Its definitely not just a gimmick. I use it all the time and so do many others. Imagine being able to watch a whole film that hasnt even been released yet whilst stuch on a boring old Train journey. The sound is reasonable if you use headphones. Other than that, i have various music videos and many football clips....... its the best value for money thing ever!!
