Good news of today:

I successfully updated the firmware. Woohoo.

Bad News:

Still don't have all my Neo Geo Roms working.

Problem:
Some roms work, some don't. These are the only ones I've tried. In case there are notorious roms for one reason or another, the roms that work are:

Samurai Shodown 4 Amasuka's Revenge (samsho4.zip)*
Puzzle Bobble 2 (pbobbl2n.zip)
-and-
Metal Slug (mslug.zip)

The roms that don't work are:

King of Fighters 2000 (kof2000.zip)
King of Fighters 2002 (kof2002.zip)*
King of Fighters 2003 (kof2003.zip)
Pulstar (pulstar.zip)*
-and-
Metal Slug 4 (mslug4.zip)

Okay. I have the newest GNGeo2X on my card, and I have performed gfx dumps on both working and non-working roms ("*" indicates a gfx dump).

Several of the titles don't work after a disclaimer says something to the effect of: "Playing this game on another board other than a Neo Geo is against the law;" the game does nothing else. On others, it boots me back to the menu, or it shows a black screen.

That's what made me think it was a BIOS problem.

BIOS files in the 'roms' dir:

uni-bios.rom
sfix.sfx
sm1.sm1
sp-sp2.sp1
000-lo.lo
sp-e.sp1
sp-j2.rom
sp-s.sp1
vs-bios.rom
usa_2slt.bin
asia-s3.rom
sp1.jipan.1024

But apparently, that's all I need, and more.

Question:

Is there something I have to do with the roms to make sure their compatible with either the GP2X or the Emulator? Run them through a program or something? Otherwise, I have no clue.

I have almost 50 roms working, including "Pulstar!" (and metal slug 2 & metal slug x) I have bunch that I haven't tried yet simply because I haven't enough room on my 1 gig card. I am too involved in playing to switch games yet.
Don't use the "cf" file of the rage2x if you get that, "playing this game on another board" and it should work, I know. I ran into the same thing. I have no idea why it causes that message, but I have several games that I cannot use the rage2x "cf."
I kept trying different dumps until I found the right ones.

Having a lot of fun here.

edit: I have the same bios files as you.

Well, I've tried using different cf modes per game, and nothing's working. At most, these roms are just freezing the GP2X when I run them in Rage2X. I'm just going to have to try and find the specific roms...

eMule is my friend...

In rage2x there is an option in the menu to play the game without using the cf. It will use the global setting instead. I have no idea why this works but it does. The same rom that gives the odd message will play ok on the global setting.

edit: What I did was delete the cf file for that particular game and it runs ok on the global setting. That game was "Pulstar."

I also found out that, as long as you change the name of the rom to what the rage2x is looking for, it will boot (with the global settings) that game without the cf file made. Of course the game has to work in the first place.

Rage2x runs all games with the global settings unless you make a special cf file for a game and specifically tell it to run the game with that cf file. I run all games with the global settings and only create a cf file for a game that requires special settings (like raster enabled).

I haven't tried any of the KOF games but I can play Metal Slug 4 and Pulstar (although I can't see why anyone would want to play this game :))with unibios, sound enabled, all other settings default. Metal Slug 4 requires a graphics dump too. Probably just a problem with your roms.

I have had neo geo rom dumps since '97 on woulds. On some emulators over the years they work and on some they do not. About 2000ish they was all re dumps as mame changed and most emulators now use the mame dump ones.

Any roms that do not work are the wrong version and you need to find anpther dump.

I had this issues with SvC recently and it took me 5 odd goes before i found a working dump.

I have Pulstar and it works great !

Your roms are in error, go find other versions and try them !

Other than that the rest of your rest up looks fine.

Would any of those games happen to be Super Sidekicks 3 or 4??? Technically mine work, but instead of playing on a soccer field they play on a weird city "backdrop." It's really distracting and I don't play it for that reason. H.G.

Did you do anything besides quoting rayek for seemingly no reason?

Thanks for all the help.

I've searched for, and found, a pack of roms specifically for the GP2X (about 1.5 gigs worth :S). It's about halfway complete since i started it yesterday, so I'm doing well. Until then, Samurai Shodown 4 will definitely keep me busy.

I don't think they're necessarily 'bad' dumps, they play fine in Kawaks, so just probably not the version GNGeo wants.

Guys, i was having the same issues. I have all my roms in the sd/roms/neogeomvs folder.
Try this:
Put all the gfx dump files in the roms folder WITHIN the gngeo folder, regardless of where you have your other roms. This worked for me.

Everything was working fine on the old version of gngeo, but upon switching to the new one i started having issues. After messing with it for an hour, this is what i came up with.

-----------------
EDIT: In the gngeo/conf folder, there is another config file. Make sure you change the "rompath" section to point to the actual roms, as opposed to the halfassed way of doing it i posted above. ;) In my case, its:
rompath /mnt/sd/roms/neogeomvs/
In case some of you reading this arent aware, Windows notepad/etc sometimes have trouble with linux text files. I use Programmers Notepad to edit mine while in windows.

You exactly found how it work :)

As for the roms problem, if some works and some don't then is 99% sure that's it's not a bios problem. It's certainly an unsupported romset.

sorry but I am having some sort of problem where if the games aren't the right set, the screen scrambles and it freezes. And when I do, I run it as unibios, And I just get a blue screen. If I run it as arcade, I just get a grid... but I can do stuff in the grid like when I press start it shows me RED GREEN YELLOW BLUE or something like that... kinda strange...

I just wish I could get Strikers 1945 Plus to run; with multiple different romsets it still just likes to jump back to the menu. Also, Aero Fighers 2/3 have a bug where the Yamaha synth seems to crash shortly into the game. It's also present in MAME, interestingly, on the 1st Aero Fighters.
