sorry, a simple question I hope..

what are gfx files with neogeo zips, they seem quite large at typicaly 60mb.. cant just be pics?

are they needed with the zipped roms?

They are what allows you to play large Neo Geo roms... I would keep them. ;) If you want to save space however, you can simply do this: Remove all files that end in c#.bin or c#.rom where # is 1-8 in the zip file.

Forgive me for being noob at this (Amigas no prb, Neo Geo not a clue).

So what exactly are they, are they extra graphics packs to give the games better graphics or what? Also what relation do they have to the .bin and .rom files you mention?

Btw, they are external to the zips but in the same rom folder, is this correct?

thanks

When you run the emulator, the emu loads the entire rom into memory. If the rom can't fit, then it creates a swap file where it can load files before it needs them so it can effectively play the game. The .gfx means that it's storing game graphics in that particular file.

I see now FFNoir, It becomes clearer now, so all in all, a new SD card then for these neo geo games..lol

Thank you both posters for your time in this matter.

Hi, sorry to hijack this post but, whilst were on the topic, what is the front end emulator in the archive. Ive been using the neo geo emu very happily for sometime without it, just wondering what it is?

Thanks and apologises to the original poster

Does anyone else have problems using the Windows Dumpgfx tool? Mine keeps saying "Couldn't load XXXX.zip"

Is there a way to reintegrate the .gfx files in the rom zip?

Short Answer: No.

Long Answer: the point of the dump GFX is so that when a graphic is needed it is loaded into memory from the gfx file. This is because the game takes up too much memory and therefore needs a swap file, which is makes in the GFX dump. Putting it back in the zip removes this purpose because there is no way to access a specific spot in a file in a zip file, and therefore impossible.

If you want to save space however, you can remove all files that end in c[1-8].bin or c[1-8].rom (c1.bin, c2.bin, etc), because that is where the graphics are.
