Rise of the Triad!

Swiss_Cheeseman:
next time.. lets ask nicely first ..

i have no problem with ppl who dont post the code in internet but give it out if you email and ask for it..

but we have now asked for the sourcecode and are waiting for it ..
ppl dont licence stuff with gpl for fun .. it's because they want it to be open .. not like this..

but well.. i've been around for long time (read that like from the end of 2001 or so)
and even doom source wasn't public untill like ½ year after the author stopped working on it or something (tomf .. you rock) ;)

and you other ppl should be complaining about swiss cheeseman's agressive start not about gpl as there's nothing to argue about gpl

everyone who disagrees with me on that can come and explain that in #gp32dev .. i bet there will be many +b & /kick's after that and not only from me..

//markus parkkonen <empee at daug dot net>

ps. didn't read this too closely as some of the posts were really retarted

Copyright law I thought was always a silly thing in terms of old out of production games.... Why protect something that doesn't need protection in the market anymore? Now emailing the creators and asking nicely if you can PORT IT as a little side precaution is nice, but think about it, if you asked 3D realms about the game, would they even remember it?

Time to crack out the old picture
gay_thread.gif

Can't you just leave it that u people have differing views? Valid points have been said by the cheeseman and i dont think that people need to keep going on about this. Just my view, dont kill me for it

I never lied in any of these posts. Where did I lie?

you brought the port to their attention

So, have you posted on the 3drealms forums yet?

there's no need. they obviously sanction these releases - by not persuing the authors. it's a common sense approach, there probably isn't a legal term invented - which is just as well, pricks like you would only squeak on about it

i think the lesson to be learnt today - is shut your mouth. and don't be acting like a prick when someone releases something. and save your soapbox for something in life which affects how you live and breath, time is short young man.

he did not supply a license, he broke copyright, the binaries are illegal

just listen to yourself. you imply he has done this on purpose.

disgraceful behaviour

I dunno what a bleater is, but I dont think I am one of them

a bleater is a jumped up, spoilt fanny, who runs around moderators when they get a kicking

Copyright law I thought was always a silly thing in terms of old out of production games

ARGH FUCK!!!

WILL YOU NOT READ MY FUCKING POSTS?!

Also, my attitude towards the person not abiding by the terms of the GPL has already been discussed. I did act too agressively, but I was in the right.

have a bath, cheesey nob

quote from 'the office' - you bring me down to this level, yoooooou make me doo this ! (stapler out of window/then in jelly)

Actually you weren't, Again, even if he did it on purpose (which I doubt) so what? It's not the end of the world because someone broke the (Dramatic voice) "Copyyyyyrightlaaawwwwww" and I think the original programming team would be flattered that someone liked their old game enough to work hard to port it. Not offending or feel like their rights were "violated"

you brought the port to their attention

I said I wouldnt bring the lack of source code to their attention. I posted that before I noticed the lack of GPL.

there's no need. they obviously sanction these releases - by not persuing the authors. it's a common sense approach, there probably isn't a legal term invented - which is just as well, pricks like you would only squeak on about it.

I'm not sure if you are talking about the GPL or the Full version of ROTT here, so I'll cover both bases.

The fact that they are still selling the game means that they would be upset if it was warezed. If they didnt care, they would release the data files along with the source. They didnt.

With the source, if people are not punished by ignoring, forgetting, basically not abiding by the terms of the GPL, then people get lazy. There is no concequence to their actions, and things get worse and worse.

i think the lesson to be learnt today - is shut your mouth. and don't be acting like a prick when someone releases something. and save your soapbox for something in life which affects how you live and breath, time is short young man.

I think the lesson to be learnt today is that the GPL is a privalige, not a right. If you forget to abide by the terms of the license, its your own damn fault. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

Also, warezing games that are still sold is wrong.

just listen to yourself. you imply he has done this on purpose.

disgraceful behaviour
I wasnt implying anything, what I said were basic facts. He probably didnt do it on purpose, but it doesnt matter. He is still holding the source back though, which makes everything far more suspect.

If he would just release it, all would be right in the world. I would be happy, he would be happy. But at the moment, the files are still illegal, and he is at fault.

a bleater is a jumped up, spoilt fanny, who runs around moderators when they get a kicking

Well in that case I am not one.

I think swiss_cheeseman is right.

If you want more ports of your favourite oldies, then please take the time to
think a bit before flaming people who are defending GPL.

It's a pity to see how many people don't care of the GPL.

If you cannot understand what opensource is and implies then shut up and
spend some times on gnu.org, slashdot.org & freshmeat.

People can be so stupid sometimes.....

the guy *forgot* to include the GPL - he forgot. for all we know he may not read english so well ? who knows and only a couple of you seem to care

he's human - right ?

as for the rest of it - you can think what you like - cheesey puff was out of line for damning him and i think the blanket hiding behind 'we use gp32 only for official stuff' is toss - i'm out in the open saying BRING ON THE CLONES ! lolol - emulators are great and so are the games that go with em - thats why i bought a gp32 and so did you

if you and cheese face are gonna start drawing lines, then you gotta draw them all the way back to not ever having any kind of potentially copyrighted file on your gp32... once you cross that line (100% of people), you cant go preaching...

Could we just bury the hatchet here? SwissCheeseMan has already said he acted to agressively, which is basically what the problem was with his original post. Lets just accept that yes, there should have been a copy of the GPL in the zip and a note saying "email me for the source", but for whatever reason there wasn't. It wouldn't surprise me if there never is considering the flame war that's resulted from the lack of it to start with.

So lets all shut up and go back to being friends, can we?

Please?

Pretty please?

no, but genuinely i dont understand why the port does not allow the use of the shareware version of the game? i am not complaining, i would just like to know the reson.........

because the rott code is shareware/registered depedant, the code for registered and shareware version isnt the same. The EXE files in the original game are different for shareware and the registered version, you must realised it. So I think the porter do the FXE with the registered version code instead of shareware version, which is better... (more levels.. etc)

Please forgive me if this topic has already been addressed, but I curious as to how I can get Rise of the Triad up and running on my GP32 FLU.

Is it true you have to buy the game and download it to your computer before it can be placed on your smartmedia card? I actually did look online, but there appear to be several versions of the game. If so, does anyone have a link to the proper copy?

About how much does it cost?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

--Jason :)

ahhh the newbs are here :D

Jason we dont support or link to files that arnt legal.

Either buy ROTT (like me B) ) or look for a full version like most people.

But we can't tell you where to download it and were not allowed to link to rom sites etc.

The several versions you mentioned are either the various shareware versions or it might be the full versions who knows.

Unless the file is 15mb its not fullversion.

To be fair, I think Jason was intending to pay for it. The phrase "About how much does it cost?" seemed to suggest that!

Anyway, let's get back to things............... @@!!!!*** !!##~!! ! !!

download the shareware version, then play it on your pc to see if you'd like it (bearing in mind that gp32 version isn't gonna be as smooth 'cause it's only at 66mhz or so...)

Then do a search for 'rise of the triad full version download checkout yahoo' umm I THINK it's on yahoo somewhere for either full version pay download or to order the cd... I don't know why they don't include a link to the pay download on this site... all this stuff about having to 'find' (not my quotes) it somewhere is defo encouraging piracy and not what i'd expect from this site... sure we all use emulators, but but not wanting the original developers of ROTT to get any money out of this when they've been so good as to release the source code, just stinks.

my 2p

damn hehehe went on a bit of a rant there... :p
