I am finally getting a gp2x for my birthday soon (< 1 week) and was wondering what everyone in the community thought were the 'essential' ROMs and homebrew games everyone should have. I of course can search for games, but I don't exactly know which games are quality especially with the pre NES systems. (colecovision, atari 800 etc.) Also I would appreciate suggestions on the best homebrew games to enjoy.

Feel free to throw in some newbie tips with your suggestions. :)

Atari 800 - Blue Max. This simple game is deceptively addictive; I used to play it for hours, or until the blisters on my fingers ripped open.

ColecoVision had many impressive titles, Donkey Kong stands out as a near-perfect arcade port.

As for Homebrew, get Vektar ... it's the best HB game for the GP2X, IMHO. Twitch-shoting at its finest.

And last but not least, you MUST play the best platformer ever made for any system; Kid Chameleon! Runs perfectly on DrMDx ... the game is so massive, that some 16+ years later I still have yet to complete it

Enjoy :)

I don't get all the hype about Kid Chameleon. Am I missing something?

Well, I don't know about hype ... but you gotta see it like this:

The game has over 1000 'boards' or areas to explore, several dozen branching warp spots, and transforming abilities (the helmets transform the kid into different beings, each with their own unique powers).

... and no save function! We got stuck on "Bloody Spike Swamp" constantly (this was level ... I dunno, 60-something) When you ran out of lives or turned off the Genesis, you started from scratch next time around ... never did get past that board, but now with the great DrMDx and save states, my dream of finishing this game may actually come to fruition!!

I can imagine a bunch of 'turn the TV off but leave the console on overnight' stuff like I used to do awhile ago. One time I was playing Star Wars Episode 1 racer and I got some really high top speed or something and I didn't turn the console off for a day or so :)

Hmm, I'm going to give playing it another go... *hears gp2x boot jingle*

Severely off-topic, does anyone know that PSX RPG with the stuff? You could do lots of stuff... it was completely non-linear. That was its big selling point -- it had graphics like an snes title, but almost 200 hours of play time. It had a sequel which was actually a prequel I think. Hmmm...

you had a very descriptive idea of this game... hmm.. it sounds like 400 different games. :)

Stop being so hyperbolic. Hmm... it was on 3 discs I think, it was in 2D, had lots of characters, you learned different jobs like cooking I think... it was supposed to be the most non-linear game ever or something... arrrgh...

Any PSX RPG experts in the house?

Okay, so I'm either thinking of SaGa Frontier or Xenogears. I'm almost positive it was SaGa Frontier though.

Great game, SaGa Frontier. Especially if you're bored of the same ol' RPGs. The PSX had so many good RPGs... will a timeline like that ever happen again? :|

It is exactly the same with me, I tried the game after dozens of TelcoLou's posts about its greatness but got stuck in the level with the waterfalls where there was a place too high to jump to yet unavoidable. We must be overlooking something obvious there ;)

Oh yeah, I was just there I think guys. Level 3 right? Go up to the wall, face it and hold left (walking into it), then rapidly press B. Due to the helmet you have from the box you broke above your head, you'll have the ability to climb up the wall.

Right?

About that Kid Chameleon game, I tried it and played through some levels for about 4-5 hours. Then I beat the final boss, and it shows the credits with his head exploding and the virtual world collapsing. Is this the end of game? I am pretty sure I did not play through 1000's of levels.

If it is, Telcolou is going to be so chuffed with you for letting him know after he has tried to complete it for over 16 years.

;)

Grab OutcaST. There's a whole bunch of games available in various places and the emulator supports writing back to the disk image so you can save your games (the amiga emulator doesn't seem to do that?). I've spend the last 4 days playing Phantasie III, The Wrath of Nikademus using it. I've not slept much and my eyes feel like they have grit in them, it's a wonderful game. Check the URL, there's a reason that was the 3rd game added to that website's database ;)

 Nah, I know I lack skills and yes, you don't need to clear all 1000 screens to finish the game ... there are multiple paths and warps.
