Hey...uh...anyone here try Netflix yet? My dad wants to go get it during the summer...and I was wondering, for the television series (and anime...), do the sets come in at one disc at a time, or in sections (such as season 1, season 2)

they come in by disc. I already asked that question to a friend :)

I use my automatic online library system to get dvds for free. i've gotten oven 200 already completely free of charge LOL

So they only give you one disc of...say the first season of smallville? ...Meh..that sux...now what was that automatic online library thing you were talking about...is it..legal per se?

I have been subscribed to some of the UK ones for a quite a while (read: years), it was kind of funny gettting sent DVDs copying them and then sending them back on the same day.

I currently subscribe to both netflix and blockbuster (to see which one I like best). It is a flat fee of $18 a month for 3 dvds at a time. But on either one, you can choose from 1 dvd at a time, all the way up to 8 dvds at a time (9.99 - 47.99). And you can change your subscription model at any time, so if you want to hurry up and get a few seasons of a show, you can get it pretty quick.

Most tv shows that I have rented come ~4 disks per season. With netflix, I seem to have a 4 - 6 day turn around, so I usually get around 15 dvds in a month. Blockbuster is a 5-7 day turn around, but you get two free rentals at your local blockbuster, so it is a toss up on which one is better.

For me, it is a really good deal. A lot cheaper than buying all the seasons and a lot faster than trying to download them.

What are you on... Dialup?

It's a wonder I don't ever post.... No I am not on dialup. Yes, it is faster getting an entire season of tv shows that I want using this method. Netflix gets me my dvds in 24-48 hrs. I encode it to the quaility that I want and don't have to worry about it being porn, someother show, or bad quality once (if) it finally is downloaded completely.

Meh...netflix might be ok for somethings, but my dad's only buying for the summer, says that we don't have time during the other months (note, HE doesn't have time.....meh...)..

We have to pay for CDs, DVDs, videos and games in our library. That sucks.

We neither have games nor videos in ourt library, at least not that I know of. DVDs are usually restricted to disney movies or educational material I could get for free from the government too. The CD election is pretty old too.

But then again I only visit the library for books....

That was a legitimate if slightly tongue in cheek question.

I recently downloaded the whole of DS9 which was seven series plus extras at a perfectly acceptable 448x336 which is better than VHS quality. That's close on 200 hundred episodes if you include the extras. It took me less that a week on nothing more than a decent 1 Mbit ADSL connection.

Based on your earlier calculations of 4 disks per season and you receiving 15 disks per month it would take you two months to get the whole of DS9.

Maybe it was, maybe not. When one assumes that his specific needs & desires are everyones needs & desires, well....

Star Trek, BSG, Sapranos, are things you can find all over the place, plenty of people serving them up. But I am older than a lot of you. I find myself getting a lot of 80's tv shows. The ones that between 0 and 3 people are serving at any time and it can take a week to get a single complete episode. Even Sliders which is a late 90's series I gave up on it after the first couple of episodes.

Another wrong assumption is that I do not watch these videos on my gp2x or on my computer. I have two network dvd players, one hooked up to a 50" tv, the other to a 32". I tend to encode my movies and tv shows at a min resolution of 640x480 and depending on a number of factors my bit rate is usually between 1200 and 1600, a couple of times just under 3000.

For what is is worth, Star trek is more like 7 dvds per season, so yes, it would take me months to get the whole thing.
