Hi all,

First of all, the incredible progress of Squidge, et al. on GP2X SNES emulation is encouraging. The SNES definitely cries out for emulation due to the breadth and quality of games, particularly RPGs and platformers.

Until yesterday, I was clamoring for Gameboy Advance emulation to catch up. Last night, I played several well-known GBA titles (Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, Dragon Quest Monsters, Max Payne, etc.). To be honest, even if the GBA can play perfect ports of a few SNES titles, it's not a great handheld overall. Most of the games are mockeries of titles that play better on other platforms. For instance, playing Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on a PS1 has completely spoiled Circle of the Moon. And some of the quirkier titles like Silent Hill Play Novel are strictly Japanese. In some cases, the ports aren't so great. For example, I checked out the GBA version of Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon this morning. It's almost an exact clone of Shining Force 1 on the Genesis/Megadrive, except with washed-out colors and reduced animation!

So, would anyone like to justify the existence of GBA emulation? I don't mean to discourage anyone who is actively working on it, since it certainly opens other avenues for gaming. But after my experience, losing GBA emulation on the GP2X doesn't seem like a tragedy.

I think you're being a little bit shortsighted - what about original GBA games? What about GBA homebrew? I always find it odd when people post negatively about stuff just because it's not suited exactly to their desires. What is the point of even suggesting to a dev that they shouldn't bother doing something? In most cases the result is free, it's something they want to do anyway, and there is bound to be other people who really do want it!

It's nothing personal, vaustein, but I can't see the point of your post...

I don't particularly need or want GBA emulation - but it would be nice to have, and I certainly don't want to discourage *anybody* from attempting it...

I agree with Vau to some extent. The GBA was an impulse buy for me, bought about 2 months after launch. I have 7 games and thats it, i rarely play my GBA and don't plan on buying any games for it in the future, I just don't like it or it's games.

The GBA does have some very good homebrew games though and would like to see emulation at least be able to play the homebrew games decently, but as for GBA emulation as a whole, regardless of platform, i could care less.

I dont really care about GBA emulation, since I use my DS heavily. But i have to disagree about the lack of good games. Sure many of the ports are lackluster, but others such as the SMB Advance series are excellent. The GBA also has a slew of excellent games, such as Metroid Fusion and Zero (while slightly linear, work well on a handheld). Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, and Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance & Aria of Sorrow. AOS is right on par with Symphony of the Night in some aspects. There are way too many good games on GBA to list. Rating a system by its ports is not really fair at all, since there are many original games available for the system.

Well I own a DS too, and am using it to play quite heavily (right now it's bricked though lol...) but I like the idea of playing homebrew games without going through all the hassle and also to compile a bunch of games on a SD card without having to deal with gba cartridges and such...
Homebrew would be cool for one thing (hey, lets get gba emulation going, then load up a gba nes emulator and emulate nes on an emulated gba... *headache*)...
But I also think that a huge bunch of gba games are just really really fun to play.
The golden sun series, pokemon, Megaman (that faselei-like fighting system one...) are reasons enough to me for wanting a gba emulator...

I don't think that GBA emulation is pointless... just because some of the ports were not as good as they could have been. I think it would be great to be able to play a large chunk of the Zelda series, solely on the GP2X.

oh! right, i totally forgot about the minish cap! Now that alone would be a reason for me to buy a gba! This game is sweet... Damn, i need to fix my DS...

Three words: Kuru Kuru Kururin.

I bought the cart for this Nick. You better be right about it because I still don't get it at the moment :p Maybe I need to spend more than five minutes at a time trying it :)

PS Why do Japanese girls sound so sexy even when they say something I don't understand like Kuru Kuru Kururin.

It's a great game, and I don't see why five minute blasts haven't revealed its greatness to you. Maybe you're just not the Kuru kind of person :)

There's nothing to really 'get'. You're a blue bird thingy, you've lost all your brothers and sisters for some reason (I never got that bit, admittedly) so you do what any regular blue bird thingy would do and jump in your rotating helicopter to find them all. Then you venture through several different worlds and attempt to find your siblings while completing courses as quickly as possible without letting your helicopter hit walls.

Quite simple, really :)

I was tempted to put ftw there followed by a dozen exclamation points, but i'm managing to restrain the impulse.

I think the main allure of GBA emmulation on the 2X is the reduction of carts you have to drag around with you. Once the DS arrived with it's tiny cards I think it became alot more intriging an idea.

SNES is a great thing too, but I do agree the still steady flow of new games for the GBA makes it a bit more desirable.

Is it just me or do each of those girls look like they're mixed-race? Seems like it could be black, european for the first pic, and korean or vietnameise for the second. Maybe just all-japanese girls are hot ;)

Asian=Asian. Even JAPANESE people can't tell the difference between a Japanese person/Vietnamese person/Korean Person/Chinese person/*insert Asian race here*
What kind of odd assessment is that? Are you japanese, and have a hard time telling the difference for yourself? I know for a fact I can tell the difference between Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese.. Korean and others (Laos, Thai etc.) are a bit of a crap-shoot for me though.

Those people in those pictures definately were mixed with some bad genes lol.
