Quick Time

no, quick time is closed source and has a lot of DRM protection in it. Its also pretty shitty, so I doubt anyone would bother.

i really really like quicktime movies.. i personally feel they are superior to other formats.

Umm, you sir, are a fool.

All quicktime is, is a bunch of slightly modified exisiting codecs. There are heaps of codecs you can choose from, but most of them are based on MPEG2 or 4 (2 being the format DVD uses, 4 being the format Divx/xvid is based on). The other formats give horrendoues quality loss and massive file sizes. The MPEG4 codec is currently the most used one, and is the main feature of Quicktime 6

In other words, all Quicktime is, is a money making machine for apple, so they can sign up movie companies to release trailers in their format and thus get a nice little profit from royalties the companies have to pay. It is a shitty, proprietry system that is nailed down with DRM and is only compatible on 2 platforms. To add to that, the software that ships with the player is the second buggiest peice of shit to ever grace windows (it loses out to RealOne). This is quite an acheivement, since Windows itself is a buggy peice of shit.

So, to conclude, Quicktime is faggotry.

the quicktime time codec is great and there are opensource versions of it
Like OpenQuicktime and also in mplayer (best movie player, linux) there is a quicktime codec, they all use a open source version which is available, dont know if its is openquicktime, perhaps another one...
but its possible!
also quicktime is faster on the pc of my father and big trailers of movie run much better than big divx things...

here is a libary for linux:
http://www.openquicktime.org/
and mplayer uses the win32 codecs or something like that...
dont know much about video but i know that quicktime works on linux with a conversion of the codec or something like that...
just look at mplayer
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/
it uses such a feature...
also mplayer could be portable.. but we have a good movie player, so why another one.
