I know, I was also aware of the problems, but I realised those problems are so bad I can't even recommend the gp2x to anyone. its a nice piece of handheld in theory, but it lacks a serious software support
im pointing out the problems GPH can handle, because such a handheld could have been an even bigger success if only those problems were addressed

but instead of a peaceful debate about what GPH should do, I've only received flames as you can see :p

I don't believe you mentioned 'maturality' when you just complain well-listed FACTS on the 'gp2x' board.

;) It seems I also need to quote myself again and again till you understand: You don't need to enlighten us.

Your opinion is correct and your list of FACTS are fair enough, AND ALL OF US KNOW ABOUT THAT AND TRY HARD TO SOLVE THEM.

Again, DaveC was correct, I should do not feed the troll.. :(

any moderator can see you are the one who tried to start a war against me. shame on you, hahaha.

its not a lack of maturity trying to debate something someone already know about. actually, you have no point here, thats all about what a debate is  oh well

I don't want to. I'm not "revealing" some sort of secret, I just started a topic to talk about it, thats all.

finally someone is able to admit what's going on here.

that's where I've put my opinion here. whether its anounced as a pre-launch/beta-test/early-adopter release or not, GPH should really have put priority into fixing these stuff rather than worrying about the device selling well or not.

Face it, Gogeta is right. It just seems like any attempt to have a rational discussion on this forum about this subject ends in a flamewar with gp2x-zealots... :(

Just voted (second option). I've grown to love the GP2X, despite its horrible shortcomings. The reason for this are the available emulators and de nice development of the psx and snes emus. I still can't stand the fact that some problems (e.g. joystick) haven't been addressed. I still haven't bought a GP2X, cause I hoped the joystick would be fixed some times soon. So far that has seemed to be wishfull thinking, so I'm probably going to buy one soon.

PS: I'm glad this thread was started. It's nice to see how far the GP2x has come and how many problems it still has.

Just thought I'd follow up.
My "not giving a damn" about video playback etc. serves to backup my response in the poll. (option 1)
It may be marketed as multi thingy but I didn't buy it for that reason. I'm only looking to validate my reason for selecting the poll result that I did.

By way of a tenuous analogy:
I bought a printer/scanner/fax thingy. Someone might complain that the scanner is rubbish. That fault doesn't affect me as I merely wanted a cheap printer and the scanner/fax shortcomings are not detrimental to my day to day use.

A shorter boot time would be of some use to me, but not that much. Fixing the problems with video and music stuff is of no benefit to me at all. It may even serve to make life worse as more storage is used to hold various codecs etc.

What would be beneficial would be the option to twiddle firmware and remove the media player aspects, the e-book reader and a lot of the other stuff and really tailor the system to my needs. It is this "tailoring" that appealed to me when I first considered buying the system.

What I would be interested in seeing is the results of a "which OS do you use?" poll. I have a sneaking suspicion that users of *nix os may be slightly more tolerant of the shortcomings and beta-esque code whereas Win/Mac users might be less enraged by the firmware issues and more annoyed by the bugs.

Chimpoid.

Haha. None of those choices suited me really so I will have to abstain.
I have about one slight problem. Not several. Nothing really bothers me. Pros outweigh the cons loads.

Thats exactly why I said he sucks, he didnt even give a supporting answer for us in the pole.
I rest my case. :)

3. Poor video player.
Now, I totally lost what do you mean.
I've never believed the unsupport of .mpg file means 'poor'
And all .avi files I've tested were good so far.

I'd call it poor when mpg was promised and so far hasn't been delivered.
When was support for .mpg files promised? I don't think I've ever seen anything official from GPH that says they will deliver .mpg support.

In my opinion and it's only an opinion. A lot of people forget how complex these devices are becoming. For one, if I had made the GP2x, it never would have been released.

I.E. The joystick still needs tweaking, someone somewhere in the world may used the hardware directly, the processor is too slow and the battery life isn't long enough. There comes a point where you just have to release the product and then (remembering that it's open sourced), deal with any problems that may or may not appear through the use of it.

I started using computer equipment since the ZX81, where you had to manually type a program into the machine, spend the next two weeks trying to work out what you did wrong and eventually got it working.

Let us look at the facts. This machine is a lot better than a PDa with a single processor running at twice the speed. I hava The Dell axim x5 pro running at 400MHZ and I can assure you that the same avi files and the SNES emulator runs terrible on this device. The joypad is unplayable and the buttons are only of any use to a baby.

The joypad on the GP2X needs some tweaking but, I personally thinks it is down to the programmer. For example. The megadrive emulator, the gameboy colour, the SNES emulator ( all the different versions) runs like a dream. The NES emulator on the other had is a little bit sluggish. I don't see this ever really being a problem.

The screen on mine using 1.0.1 and noe 1.2.1 firmware is perfect. On mine I can't overcloack full stop but in my opinion it isn't a problem.

I think the best way to describe the GP2X is. It is formula 1 and the PSP, DS, GBA etc are road vehicles. They're designed to do only a few things and they're not designed to be tweaked. Where as the GP2X is designed to be tweaked to the max. Like anything that is pushed to the limit, you will find a lot of problems that weren't there before.

For an example. If you want the GP2X to run movies, use POCKETDIVX encoder and the movies will run fine. If you want to run any emulators and are too impatient totweak the software. Put the GP2x in a cupboard and in three to six months time come back and then run the updated versions of the emulator.

I don't think people realise how mush has been achieved in such a small time. For instants. A console game take 12 months to 118 months. This machine has been on sale for less than six months and it has over one hundred games and emulators and some of them run at full speed. Ask yourself this question. How many other console could boast such an achievement taking into account that no one had any hardware to test before the release?

So take a chill pill, smoke a joint or what ever you do to relax and stop expecting the impossible. If you really want a straight out the box machine that does everything that you expect. see you next year when the same cycle time that's required for an average game to be made expires and then come back. I for one will not be selling my machine and until I can program myself, will not be complaining and the amazing work done by a group of individuals that do this for fun and gring a little happines into this dreary world that we call life.

Can you pass me that joint you smoked before writing this ?:D

Umm... so?

(I voted second option, but only because mine is suddenly defective and won't run on batteries. Getting a replacement after the competition)

A mod should close this and ban this idiot!

Some idiot comes on here, slagging us all off, sets himself up as an expert!

What is the point of this thread? Anyone who wants to buy a gp2x will come on here and know about the problems. Every other thread is an attack on gph at the moment. But if people want smooth simple gaming stick to the mainstream handhelds!

Sure there are problems, but what I have is a whole heap of fun for not that much money!

So seriously, what is the point of these threads? And these polls, with no option to say you are completely happy with what you have (as I am so far!), and when you try to point out this, the OP flames you!

Just pointless.

i think that my feelings (and from reading this, most everyone else's as well) can be summed up by saying that no, it's not perfect, but just seeing it in action will make you say well hell, it's good enough, now let me play some quake!

as was said before, the pros outweigh the cons. also, people adapt themselves to things, and it's no trouble to adapt yourself to something that's so much fun. i just fired up the usb-serial gadget and was amazed that i am able to make a terminal connection to this little beast...i'm so proud of it :)

Why do people here want to censor debate and critisism ?

The GP2X has many issues you would not expect in an electrical gadget compared to Nintendo and Sony. I don't have a problem with the LCD but I expect others do, and it is wrong to try and silence them.

I have a problem with the joystick, its just total trash and a few extra bucks if needed, could have implemented a better solution instead of finding the most common PCB joystick in an electronics catalogue.

While my friends have liked the emulators and movie playing, they took my advice and have not bought. They think it is better that all hardware and build issues are resolved.

You can say people should research the product before buying, why ? The distributers place advertisments and it looks like a nice device. But the distributers are not honest either and just want to sell.

Gpax state to unscrew the device and move it around if the joystick is funny, or chop of the joystick stem, or stick some paper in it, wtf ? Can you imagine Nintendo or Sony stating this.

And Evil Dragon appears on TV promoting the GP2X and yet he has the audacity to use DaveCs joystick on TV, which is not only misrepresenting the product to the public, but also an endorsement that what he is selling is not up to the job.

People have a right to express their views, contrary to the fanboys.

DG.

Of course the distributors are making it look like a nice device. Would you buy something that said "GP2X: Worst Game Console Ever, Awful Build Quality, You're 100% Guranteed To Hate It"?

GBAX is not comparable to Nintendo or Sony. GBAX is more comparable to GAME. I can imagine the staff at my local GAME saying "well, if you shove a wad of paper in this, then it'll work better" because the GAME staff are all videogame freaks themselves.

And have you watched ED's broadcast?

You really just should. Distributors, developers and manufacturers often lie or are jus plain wrong about their claims. Truth is, GPH's claims are more grossly exaggerated than usual - I attribute that to GPH's clueless-ness. If a company fails to meet their claims you can feel free to return that piece of hardware. The gp2x is no different - you can return it to gp32z, gbax and in some cases even play-asia and lik-sang if you so please.

However, it is imperative that you review return policies from manufacturers and distributors when you purchase hardware. There are times when you can't return a product if you're simply displeased with it or even if they didn't meet their own claims. It's your own fault if you didn't read the policies and didn't do your own research and come to find that now you can't return it. This is research you should do. No question about that. And if you come to find their return policy isn't to your liking then you REALLY need to do research on the product itself. It's barely something that's debatable. If at gp32x forums it's well documented that there are problems with the gp2x and you buy a gp2x and come back to said gp32x forums to complain about the same problems that have been discussed here hundreds of times how can you be surprised, disappointed or mad at subseqently being flamed?
