thats what i meant, sorry. If you are going to put music on there, and games and roms etc. Then mostly it should be regarded the same as mp3s. If i own a cd with the songs on and rip the music, and put it onto my 2x, then its pretty much the same as with games and roms of that game. Cd tracks = mp3s, games = roms.

For me though, roms and mp3s are pretty much the same kind of thing, except with a few more issues. Games are so expensive, and so big companies dont want to lose cash coz people are buying them for half the price on import ,s they crack down on that to make more cash.
Also, microsoft decided to make copying their windows op sys illegal.. or you can take a look at half life 2 where valve dont trust ANYONE!! so much so that they make out that cd copying and game copying is completely "illegal"!!. Yet, people have been doing this since tapes and vhs. So until someone official from my government says "all roms and their counterparts used for downloading are illegal and shall be withdrawn" then i shall stop with the whole rom thing.

You have to download a copy of a homebrew game, a COPY, its not yours or the original, its a copy of the original with a liscence to be distributed freely. There are rules by the author aswell, like "please do not host without my permission" etc etc. But as you said aswell, its about openess, but there are still some people who make it less as open as it SHOULD be.

Hey, this is kind of going off the topic really about where to get psx roms, which is possibly a good thing!

I got loads of games, and i got the gp2x to play them on the go. But sometimes i always get the feeling that like "looky what i got! haw haw haw! And have this like strange grin of criminalment... sort of like if you are in college and you have some weed in your pocket to smoke later... i feel somewhat like even though everything is "free" im not completely sure if i want to go and play it in a cop shop, if you know what i mean.

Thanks empyre for understanding what i am saying :)
In some countries, copying anything (or downloading a copy) wether you own it or not, is still illegal.

Lots of people (including me) get confused between what is legal and what is ethical.

Owning a complete MAME set is illegal but due to current © laws, most arcade boards will be dead and unrecoverable before they ever become legal to copy. Breaking the law to preserve them is in some cases the only way to avoid loosing them forever. I therefore think it is ethical to do this, even though it's against the law.

The eBay, usenet and eMule examples I gave are all ok not because it is ok to look but illegal to touch. It's more like the current UK knife laws, its ok to own a knife, even though you could kill someone with it, because it has other ligitimate uses. eBay sells lots of legal stuff, usenet and eMule have lots of legal files for download, therefore pointing out that these resources exist is ok. If someone decides to download something that they do not own the © for, that is a matter for thier own particular lagal/moral code and of no concern to me.

Pointing out a link to http://www.loadsa-roms.com/leetpsx/kewlgamez.iso should rightly get me banned as I'm doing nothing more than saying where to get something illegal. Saying "have a look on emule or google" shouldn't get me banned because it is not up to me what the person looking will find or choose to download.

You are starting to lose track now. Like I said, in somecountries copying a cd is illegal even if you own the cd, wether that cd has music or half-life 2 on it.

When you buy software you do not own a copy of anything. You possess a license to use the software, you do not own it.

What your rights are when it comes to homebrew is up to the author and the licence they release thier software under. If the software is shareware, you are expected to pay for it if you use it for a prolonged period of time, if you don't pay the license is withdrawn and you are breaking the law again. If its freeware you can do with it as you please. If its gpl'd I think we all know what that means now ;) (ducks before the gpl loonies^h^h^h^h^h^h^h advocates arrive)

I read a survey of the current generation about © infringement and it said that they know that copying stuff is wrong but they see it as less bad than other crime and so are will to condone/participate in it.

Sign of the times I guess, p2p is going to eventually kill the current media laws (or kill the companies who can't adapt).

He has to, which is why he doesn't post much, and reesy is a very rich man.

As for the copyright laws argument, I think it is now the time to say:

Don't copy that floppy!

change is good. the world aint gonna last much longer anyways, and besides, it just shows what the human race is really like when millions of people die everyday... and the rich people are just sitting about going "that bloke who copied a cd he already owns... can we make some cash from that?"

I do think that making a copy of something you own is legal.

What are your views on making a copy of something like, say, a painting then?

HAHAHAHAHHAAH!!! nickspoon that DONT COPY THAT FLOPPY thing is AMAZING!!!!

It was intended to destroy you from the inside, psychological-warfare-style, not to entertain you.
