I know there are a ton of free programs out there to do the conversion... just wondering what you folks like to use. I have some divx movies that are around 600MB... and I want to cut them down to fit on my 512MB card along with some other games and stuff.

Gonna have to go with virtual dub mod too... i can remove things like title screens and end credits easily, recompress it at a smaller resolution and a better compression, all that jazz.

Go take the time to learn it. Once you do, and once you get converting anything to anything down, the whole world is open.

Well a bit of confusion here. People think a change in resolution helps size. It doesnt. If effects quality. Here is an example:

at 320*240 there are 76800 pixels.
at 320*192 there are 61440 pixels.

thus the bitrate of say 320 kbps is shared between all the pixels. This is a total of 327680 bits per second.

so at 320*240 there are 327680/76800 = 4.2666666666666666666666666666667 bits per pixel

so at 320*240 there are 327680/61440 = 5.3333333333333333333333333333333 bits per pixel

So the quality is higher. So to reduce size you must drop the bitrate or shorten the video. I hope this helps people.

O the pocket divx encoder, when selecting the potable machine you want to put your film on, which one is the best suited for GP2X?

Have you tried this guide?

http://www.pocketmatrix.com/guides/dvd2divx/

I just followed it step for step and within two hours had Ghost in the Shell on my GP2X. Excellent guide and step by step with EVERYTHING you need to get the job by Florian "accolon" Hillebrand.

Can't say enough good things about it.

I use DVDX - in conjunction with XVID. Both are freeware, and both are excellent. You can compress (using DIVX codec if you want) a full film to about 240Mb with great quality (320x240 pixels, as that is what the GP2x displays).
