1. What's the Battery Life like?
2. How is the control?

I'll post more questions here as I think of them. :)

Battery life is around 4 to 5 hours with good rechargable 2500 mAh batteries.

Controls are good, except the joystick. There are many mods you can do if you dont like the current one.

Buy it, see if you love it like the majority of people, and if not sell it :).

EDIT: its late..

I use Duracell 2500NiMH AA batteries and get about 4/4.5 hours of gaming(and if I Overclock its somewhat less.) They Joystick is not that great, its convex and your thumb will slip off easily. The tips of the saucer on the joystick are rather sharp and adds to the discomfort. However, the cap is interchangable, i hear DaveC's cap modification is rather nice, or you can make one yourself.

Are those the normal batteries I'd buy in a store?

1) What kind of batteries do you have? Standard AA's give you about 1.5 hrs max, so you want rechargables. I have a set of 4 2000 mAH AA's that last around 2-2.5 hrs a pair. I'm looking for my 2500mAH batteries I bought a while back. Concensus is you can get 3.5-4hrs on a good pair of batteries like those.

2) in a word, tolerable. Depending on what your expectations are of the stick, you will be OK with it or it will be the downfall of the platform. I'm cool with it, but it certainly has issues, please look at any of the joystick specific threads plaguing the board for specifics.

wow.... that battery life is kinda low. :/

and I don't know about that stick.

hm...

With a good pair of rechargables (~$10) you should get 4 hours without underclocking. Alot of things do work fine when you underclock though, and since the batteries are AA, it's not hard at all to have quite a few extras to bring along.

I bought those in rite aid. They are rechargable, make sure you get 2500NiMH for best performance. Duracell is not the best however, i hear the energizer 2500 are better, but its up to you, you can do the research yourself.

I've been playing mine for a few weeks now, and I've gotten used to the stick, I still might replace it though, I'm not sure.

As for battery life I was floored about how long I got out of some 2500 mAh rechargeable Energizer. I hear so many low estimates that I thought another update would have to come out to fix that. I get at least 4.5 hours on playing games. My philosophy on overclocking is when the program is ready it will run without it, and if it doesn't then I don't need to play it, I'll wait for the next handheld from GPH to play it.

Thanx,
Stan

If you don't know, don't buy. I love mine, but I enjoy playing games wherever. Most laptops have 2hours of battery life, yet everyone always has them plugged in, unless they are going on a trip, like a plane or something.

Yeah.. I just got mine a few days ago and I have a pair of 2300 mah by Panasonic and they're working great - the good thing about having a system that takes AAs that if you are on a plane and you run out of battery life, you just pop in another pair instead of having to wait to recharge.

Well I'm just here to back up Rite-Aid batteries, for some reason they just kick the petunsies out of duracell and energizer for me. YEah the joystick is annoying, I have a friend who is a welder and I'll see if he can make me a cooler, better cap for it

Edit: Has anyone here gotten the ac adapter?

I've gotten an AC adapter. I took the specs down to Radio Shack and they put together a working one. It's pretty nice.

I've done some research, and have come up with a total cost for adons for the GP2X.

@ GP32Z.com:

1gb SD card: $74.99 USD
Power Adapter: $24.99 USD
Card Reader: $14.99 USD
Case: $14.99 USD
TV - Out Cable: $10.99 USD

@ Best Buy:

Energizer 2500mAH NiMH Rechargeables (4) w/ Charger: $24.99 USD

DaveC's Joystick Cap Mod: $10.00 USD

All prices don't include shipping.

Totals:
$175.94 USD
€145.65 EU
£100.17 GBP
$235.17 AUD
$205.08 CAD

That's a lot of money, but some of this isn't necessarily... necessary. Figure in shipping, possibly an unbricking serial adapter, and you have quite a hefty bill.

Just for shits and giggles, I guess.

Well... I paid over 100GBP for my GBA SP with case, car charger and headphones if I remember correctly, and another 100 for the flash card and linker cable. That was a lot of money and I still only had one game at that point.

Considering what the GP2x is capable of I think that it's a real bargain.

You can find these separately for a LOT cheaper (I got a 60x speed 1gb SD for US$57 and Card Reader for US$5).

the joystick is shit. honestly, dont buy one yet, wait and see if GPH release a new unit in a couple months with an improved joystick or if you buy now you'll be stuck with a shitty stick

I have been playing on my gp2x since december with the use of four 2500 mah batteries (I always have 2 in the charger) and get around 3 - 4 hours of battery life.In the evenings I just set it to charge, like mobile, which is easy to do.

Now on to the joystick...it's not very good and can be unresponsive in games: turning the car in micromachines is impossible because of the diagonals, other games fail because you can only move around the screen up down left and right (again, diagonalls are crap). As I have stated elsewhere on the forum, they need to use a more responsive electrical component for the joystick. Yes, there are alternative caps for the controller but they can never fix the problem to a satisfying standard.
