Gph/digisys Gpl Compliance W/ 1.3.0 Firmware

it would be a good idea, however i'd rather risk it as i myself have had no problems updating at all whatsoever

Don't jinx it.

For all you know gph will include an update to u-boot in the next update and if that fails you'd be pretty screwed

isnt 1.3 meant to be out like now?
From following this debate I get the impression it would have been. DJWillis, ED and Craigix were on the brink of getting us a solution that would have also meant a good relationship with the Koreans. Then the 'GPL nuts' got this /.ed without first researching what the situation with DJ, ED and Craigix was. The subsequent barrage of phone calls, abuse and emails to those involved may well have delayed it.

Show me the 'GPL nuts', do you use hate words like 'nigger' and ' faggot' and 'communist' etc etc. If you are refering to the good people who complained, and it seems a happy conincidence that the source release announcment coinsides with the complaint. If Craig, GPH want the source release just as much they would undertsand the feelings of those involved and be sympathetic, again I doubt if they have any interest in a release

Umm, that's a bit OTT, don't you think?

I think anyone who tries to create a hate figure, to shift blame from the real problem. Is a tried and tested method. Pick your own killing of millions people who did this, Craig and others are in good company. Who is responsible? I'll tell you Craig, GPH, Dignsys. DJWillis assumed the resposiblity and if he was surprised by the resposes he got he shouldn't have been. In reality he should be the voice of those e-mails put in a diplomatic manner.

What Craig did in that letter was "Nasty", and the fact anyone would fall for such noncence and spread hate is sick.

An equally plausible interpretation of last week's events is that the furore over the Slashdot article finally forced the Koreans to get serious about the GPL. Which of these two interpretations is correct? I don't think it's helpful if people are getting abusive messages, but the fact that abusive messages have been sent doesn't mean that the recipient has a right to not comply with the GPL.

Actually, I thought that Craig's letter was referring to the slashdogs blatantly sending lots of hatemail to GPH, him, etc instead of dealing with it in a civil manner. Stop taking this so damned personally, the way you write your posts seems like you are baiting people to flame you. You seem to be spreading the hate pretty thick yourself.

EDIT: And I quote:

We are now trying to patch up the damage done by idiots who read the slashdot post and decided the best course of action was to write childish abusive emails to various people not even connected with the software development. Smooth guys, real smooth.

Where's the nasty?

Allan.

I know why labels like "linux zealots", "GLP nuts, or "slashdogs" are used. The fact that a better label could be "caring individuals", "disgruntled consumers", "people who's rights have been abused", "The lied to". I didn't care enough to send "hate mail" or as it should be named "release the source its been months and my patience is wearing thin". I do care that these people(and you) give hate terms, baming *them* to excuse their own actions, which to be fair have been awful. The only thing I see is that if a large enough group of people are prepared to complain things happen. I see *months* of nothing, one slashdot post and things happen.

As for speading hate, I'm not. I'm saying every sentance of that letter is a lie, and I'm someone who had stopped caring whether they released the source or not.

Good for you. I suspect you are the only one - Craig has been nothing but helpful to myself and heaps of other gp32x'ers, so I see no real reason why he would start being dishonest now.

Allan. (ps Hanz, your quoting while marvellously cryptic could be taken in many different ways.. how did you intend it? :) )

'GPL nuts' is not my term, it has been used before and was quicker to type than 'caring individuals' while clearly identifying a group. Since when did communist become a slur akin to faggot and nigger ? This is the kind of sloppy, emotive thinking that has driven this frore.
Given that DJWillis, ED and Craigix are directly in contact with the Koreans I tend to put more credence in their posts than in those of the 'caring individuals'. Both Craigix and DJWillis clearly indicate that a cooperative and satisfactory resolution was 'days away from getting everything sorted out'. They both have indicated that they now feel the relationship they worked so hard to foster with the Koreans has been 'shot to hell' by these 'caring individuals'.
The blogger who sent his link to slashdot, whose research didn't extend to emailing Craigix, ED or DJ to actually find out the current situation, then posts in reply to DJWillis revealing that he can't even extract the correct meaning from a simple paragraph.
It just seems to me that a lot of ill informed 'caring individuals' have not helped the situation at all but are contining to delude themselves into thinking they have. I suspect at some level they know this and are trying to make Craigix look like the bad guy to deflect attention from themselves/ justify their stance.
I see months of nothing, one slashdot post and things happen.
WTF ? It has barely been out for two months. But saying weeks would not have the same impact, would it?

"Nigger" is not my term, and has been used before, but I don't use it. "Communist" is a slur thats increadibly well documented, and is often used today as a slur in the name of certain propriaty companies. It is emotive, but I'm objecting to "hate" labels, are you saying some hate labels are acceptable?

I write my posts becuase I have read Craig's posts and read DJWillis comments, and the fact that the source wasn't released. The situation was increadibly simple, people who have made money off the device haven't released the source when asked "lots and lots of time, by many people" and to add insult to injury released incomplete sources, and that is still the state of play today!!!

How are they trying to deflect attention from themselves? :D are they the ones not releasing the source. What did they do? Do they kick cats? Who are they? Your trying to shift the blame too, but there is nobody.

Its been months.

Good for you.
'GPL nuts' is succinct and to the point while 'caring individuals' could apply to any group. It was not intended to be derogatory. You can say someone is 'nuts' about something without implying anything negative.

"Communist" is a slur thats increadibly well documented
A communist is a person who adheres to a particular political dogma. Like democrat or facist. Although I concede that if you are American you will have a culturally indoctrinated paranoia associated with the term. I overlooked that possibility.

and is often used today as a slur in the name of certain propriaty companies.

Pardon ?

I have not said any thing to the contrary. I was just giving my take on the situation arising from this issue. It seems to me that this whole business has been counter productive and could have been avoided if people had checked with those in the know.
How are they trying to deflect attention from themselves?
By making Craigix, without whom the GP2X would be some unknown Korean handheld, look like the bad guy.
trying to make Craigix look like the bad guy to deflect attention from themselves/ justify their stance.
It is in the sentence FCS.

It is in the post :

Yes, again it is in my post. The point is using 'months' when referring to a period of about two months should really be more specific unless you are trying to exaggerate your 'point'.

I hope this helps you understand my post better.

EH?

"GPL Nuts" is neither succinct or to the point. Its a label. Don't use it. It describes nobody. Everybody knows why labels are used. Its to create a *them* when there isn't a *them*. Who is at fault? people making money off linux, and you don't have to give labels to them, you know exactly who they are.

GPL is in this instance used to *force* GPH to do that they should do without a licence. Thats the point nobody cares about the licence, they care about the essence of the licence. If you don't why the hell are you even posting, and if you do your a 'GPL Nut'.

Communist is a term being increasing being used as a way of describing open source.

I'll do a quick check, has the souce been released no!, I'll check again the answer is still no! Hold on let me check again. etc etc. I'm a grown man do I need to ask permission, to complain. No. Everybody knows the situation.

Again what have the "caring individuals", "disgruntled consumers", "people who's rights have been abused", "The lied to" done.

If anyone is not saying the comments on here, on slashdot, the posts on GPH and the "e-mails" could not have been avoided simply by doing the *right thing*<---look didn't mention a licence.

I'm make it really clear the source *still* has not been released!

How about coming at it from the divide and conquer angle?

The semantics of all this are just preposterous.

If you accept and believe in the the open source principle, it would be far more healthy to decide en mass what is the best way forward. I accept that people are coming to the community constantly and are bringing with them new thoughts and ideas constantly. This is good I am seeing new faces everyday, and despite what you might expect from an old "three figure member" like me I welcome it. Diversity and dynamism is what the whole gig is about.

What it isn't and should never be about for me is about in fighting and trying to win petty little squabbles in order to achieve some self percieved one upmanship. From what I can work out Cyclops (and I accept he has a tendancy to be alittle abraissive) is simply saying that the principle of open source dictates that it should be that. End of story.

Craig, DJWillis et al also believe this but have simply chosen to approach it in an alternative fashion, given their connections and position. Neither is wrong and both are entitled to an opinion.

I have said this before. It is a games console. It's great fun and the community around it I consider fairly special as well. What I do object to, and here I am entitled to a personal opinion, is people ruining my hobby by making out it's life and death.

If you are fed up waiting to play Linux. Stick it on your PC. It will end up her by hook or by crook. It wont happen any faster or slower by us taking pot shots at each other.

Communist? Anarchist? Piss Artist? Try reading Homage to Catolonia by George Orwell and I say this with particular reference to the the republican infighting in Barcelona and how it totally betrayed those at the front. If you throw enough shit, some will stick. No one likes to think they are standing next to a traitor. Not fair and the fascists end up winning.

Sit down have a cup of tea and think about it. I'm not being a wishy washy hippie, and I don't know the intricacies of the computing world but I do like to think I have fair experience of and a pretty good idea of what is appropriate and decent.

We like hyperbole around here don’t we, but anyways to start address some of this…

Yeah Craigix, give up your livelihood so we can get better emulators quicker. I am sure DijiTao will take unpaid leave from his job, to set an example for us all, until we have source for every release so far.

This has nothing to do with better emulators; it has everything to do with “doing the right thing”. If all I wanted was better emulators I would happily let GPH/Dig continue to break the law so that they could more efficiently get firmware patches out the door. I pick on Craig because his store more then any other used the words “Open Source”, and “Linux” in the marketing of the gp2x. Looking at gp2x.co.uk I see a Linux inside / Tux the penguin logo, when I see that I have an expectation about getting the source. At the very least Craig shouldn’t advertise the device as such until the device is compliant with the GPL. Not selling the GP2X is a bit more hash a thing to do, but I honestly believe it’s not entirely unreasonable. GPH needs to understand that the figurative angry mob of villagers armed with pitch forks and torches is starting to rally calling for the blood of this Frankenstein monster, and that when people like Craig, ED, or DJWillis politely offer them an easy way out of this problem they would be wise to take it.

As for the labeling of “Slashdogs” and “GPL Nuts”, yes it’s very clearly a case of labeling as a means of creating a “them" – but so what, nothing to get bent out of shape about. It doesn’t take typing out a dissertation on these forums to figure out who’s in the wrong, and who (however rude “they” maybe) is in the right. The attempts to shift the blame are just lame, but hardly qualify as hate crimes.

Actually that’s not at all how I see it. I see the open source approach as those with the will and imitative attempting to tackle the problem as they sit fit. Then others will come along and join one of these “starters” whom they think is doing it the best way. Inevitably over time it is realized that one group is making better progress then the other and so people will switch sides and a defacto standard is established. Sometimes however it is realized that the different groups are actually solving subtly different problems and each group continues and comes up with an optimal solution to their particular flavor of the original problem (KDE vs. Gnome). Still other times, the groups will see that each has something to offer the other and they combine using the best ideas of both groups. Each of these paths happen all the time, and none of them are inherently any better then the others. In the Open Source world people tend to just “do” instead and I believe that this leads to a true free market of ideas. Deciding en mass ala some form of voting or committee tends to lead to a solution by compromise.

---
Right now, I’m content to see how this week plays out – no need to continue to throw a fit. We have a promise out of them and that’s all I really wanted. Now if they break that promise….
