Does Anything Happen When Batteries Run Out?

I've heard one horror story of someone getting their GP2X bricked by this. I'm just wondering if this actually happens.

I got my GP2X 1.2.0 yesterday. Don't plan to upgrade because the list of changes don't do anything for me. All I have are standard AA batteries, the Bexel ones that came with it and some Eveready ones. In short, I have no rechargables or an adaptor.

Anyone know?

If the batteries run out during a firmware flash the gp2x could very well brick, but I haven't heard of it bricking from the batteries running out during normal usage.

Mine starts acting weird for a few seconds, then the display flickers and dies, then a whining sound comes from the speakers which rapidly turns into a farting noise. Then it turns off. :)

Mine still has version 1.0.1 of the firmware, though. Rumour has it that the newer firmware actually turns on the red battery-low light at some stage.

Mine just crashes, and then when I turn it off and back on, it freezes on the white screen with the lines on it. So basically it LOOKS like it bricked, but a simple change of batteries brings it back to life. :) Also, I think mine tends to freeze on the loading screen more if the batteries are low.

The effect when you run out of batteries in normal use is amazing! Suddenly, without warning, it flickers and distorts followed by a cool display of coloured lines flashing around the screen. Brilliant, unless you're in the middle of something good..

hmm.... it turns off?

I have had mine run out of batteries at least 10 times now with no ill effects.

Spend another $20 or so and get peace of mind. I'm glad I bought my AC adapter, and fear no more of abrupt interrupt of gaming. :)

I had a slightly nasty experience of my SD card refusing to read after I left it on when the batteries were dying to see what it looked like when they'd completely gone. Fixed simply by ejecting and re-inserting the card after booting up without any card inserted - but that's the extend to which I've experienced problems when batteries expired.

I've finally done my battery mod now.

3* 3.7v 800mah batteries (4th gen ipod ones to be exact). I'm currently benchmarking it and it's approaching 3 hrs with sound on at the moment. I'm not convinced the batteries were fully charged either so it's looking good.

I've just got to do a bit of soldering so that there's a more stable contact between the batteries and the battery contacts and add a couple of copper strips to the back of the battery so I can charge it

When the batteries run out, it.......

gives you the winning lottery numbers! ;P

But only for a second, you have to have a quick eye. ;)

It's great entertainment when the batteries run out.... flashing colours, flickering lights, funny noises...

great fun... unless you've not saved recently that is!

I'm reluctant with how strangely placed the AC adaptor's plugin is. How will I access the R button with THAT in the way?
It's easy. I use mine on an adaptor all the time (I still have the original batteries in there after several weeks) and I can access the right shoulder button just fine. The plugs (I also have USB connected all the time) sit between your fingers. Stop fretting about it and just try it and see.

Mine just dies. No flicker or farts. Someone film the farting of the GP2x and put it online for me? Thanks.
