Ive enjoyed my gp2x belive me i have but the joystick and all the crappy issues just forces me to sell it to make my money back.

Yeah the megadrive emualtor is good, although u have to run it with a 266 overclock to get a good framerate, and even then you just get frustrated because the awafull joystick messus up your gaming experience ( why the idiots didnt put in a bloody d pad i dont know).

The video is ok although the scanlines are never gona go and no matter how you look at it after splashing out on the console, batteries charger etc it still amounts to the price of a PSP which has an amazing screen for films.

Im not lost on the gp2x but i am kinda dissapointed in it at the moment. I really wanted to love it and embrace it but the joystick is simply awfull and its never gona be a gaming joystick ( how many of you have played a game on DRMD only to find the joystick has f**ked up your game, so you turn it off and choose another and this continues till youve played 60 games lol) this in my eyes is NOT enyable gaming.

I will still hang around here and see whats being devolped and in no way am i totally saying dont get one cause its a good little machine but it could of been AMAZING with a little more thought and time.

If things change ill get another one when i have the cash and time to appreciate it untill then im out of here and i wish everyone the best i nthe new year.

peace out

Isnt that a little hasty? We havent even scratched the surface of what it can do yet, we've seen nothing that uses both processors properly and the firmwares are still being released for it. Personally I've actually warmed up to the joystick, although i forsee some cool interchangable joystick mods being developed in the future.

Have to agree with you in some way, the joystick is terrible, if I had not modded mine I would have definitly sent my GP2X back. I simply could not play any games properly with the old joystick

As it is now with my modded joystick (by simply replacing the joystick with a smaller plastic stick) it is now 100% better.

DrMD runs fullspeed at 200mhz for me, what are you on about 266mhz?

the joystick is SHIT, we all know that, my games always get fucked up because of how shit it is, thumb slipping off when your trying to move around constantly, and the up left/right diagonal problem is by far the worst, but i still love it and i wont be selling it, someone will make new joysticks and GPH/programmers will fix the crappy diagonalstuff

I know exactly what you mean, it still does seem unfinished. I mean, my pros/cons list hasn't changed much since I got it:

PROS:

- Linux! Manufacturer-sanctioned homebrew!
- No hideous restrictive S*ny-creatures trying to make us pay 150 times for the same old rubbish!
- Holy CATS, mobile Spectrum Emulation!
- Good lord, that's a nice Genesis emulator. Speedball 2-tastic. *tingle*
- MAME! Eeeeek! And it WORKS! *faints*
- F...Films! Divx ones! Realtime scaled ones if you can't be bothered re-encoding! Glorious. GLORIOUS.
- Loads of other stuff I don't use, but other people like! Whee!

CONS
*** Note: None of the following are fatal, but they take the patience of a saint to deal with ***

- The stick controller is epitome of bad design. It's like a committee sat down and said "Let's make it LOOK analogue to get the punters rolling in, but give it a digital assembly which is ill-fitting for the likeliest of tasks it'll get used for. They can whistle for their dragon punches! Oh, and let's make the outer surface rounded and slick so everyone either gets sore thumbs or accidentally presses the inner stick button". Replacing or amending the top bit isn't going to make the diagonals much easier, I daresay.

- Crashes, failures to start up at all, general instability
This is probably just my specific machine. Both pre-and-post firmware update, every fourth time the machine decides not to get past the green screen at all, both with and without SD card fitted, different types and ratings of batteries, etc. BUT I'm totally willing to wait on that being either being sorted out in software or by the manufacturer themselves. The bit that irks me is that the site doesn't have a big message saying "This stuff might not be ready yet, dudes, just bear with us". I bought it on the assumption that help was at hand and I was willing to help fund the grand experiment.

- No analogue volume control. This means we have to rely on the programming savvy of our magnificent cabal of programmers to either utilize the volume buttons correctly or offer an alternative mechanism to do so. The up side is we can occasionally use the volume buttons for something else, if the volume were set in an options screen elsewhere.

- The headphone socket assembly is rubbish.

That's about it. I'm glued to it most of the time, overlooking anything and everything wrong with it, because the up side is worth it. But yes, some of the errors really should have been caught at the design stage rather than... now.

Somebody please fill me in on this joystick problem. I have not modded mine and I have beat metal slug 1 and two easily with the standerd joystick. It gave me no problems and i like it. So why does evr1 else seem to hate it so much. It seems like a god compared to that little stumpy piece of crap on the psp.

Now that's not strictly true, is it? Rough calculations:

GP2X (£125) + 1Gb SD card (£30) + Batteries & charger (£15) = £170

Whoops...we're cheaper than a PSP already! But lets continue for completion's sake...

PSP (£180) + 1Gb memory stick (£45) = £225

And that's assuming you don't actually buy any games, of course. At around £20 a pop they really can mount up.

Well, don't let me stop you selling your GP2X; I can sympathise with you on the bugs/joystick issues but you seem to be overly eager to justify your decision with this one. Personally I'd give it a year to wait and see how things improve before you jump ship. If the GP32 is anything to go by, we won't see the best from this machine for a good few years yet.

I'm sure if you waited a year then everything will be fixed. I'm still trying to get a smaller card so I can update to 1.1.0 so I can use my 2GB SD card. I haven't actually played it yet, but did the 'test' with the d-pad, looks like it's going to be a problem. The screen is sharp, and the unit it self is a good size. I might be trading some cables/blank Dvds or something for a smaller card today, so I might get to play it.

For as long as it's been out it has quite a bit ported, and I don't think it's that popular yet, I'm sure tons of coders/Linux geeks are yet to find out about it. Give it some time, if you need the money sell it if you have to, you can always get one later.

Thanx,
Stan

Good decision stepp. Not everyone is an early adopter. Some can stand the bugs, some can't. No harm in waiting and seeing how the GP2X turns out.

The joystick was bad when I first picked it up but I got used to it. For me it's nothing worth bitching over but I can understand why people would prefer a d-pad.

GPH shouldnt have released it like that because of so many new people buying it thinking wowzies like its the toy! . But im going to keep my lil gp2x.

*I think its neat that 1-2 new things pop up daily in the gp2x file archive :)

i wouldnt prefer a D-pad to this, a d-pad would suck even worse, if the stick was concave instead of convex, that would be a whole lot better to begin with, but its the left up and right up diagonals which are too easy to hit which bug me most

I remember the GP32 joystick rocked my world. Sigh...
I think most "end-users" like me should wait like a year or more to buy gp2x. I suggest that most other people thinking of getting one should do the same.

DId you put it up yet? Where are you selling it? I'm going to sell mine too.

Have you tried the 'bit of paper' fix on wiki. I did it yesterday and was amazed by the difference it made. I can now walk in a straight line in Phantasy Star IV! :D

That's because (as me :p ) you're a real gamer and are able to adapt to any situation :D Some others are just whiners ... I guess that if they never finish a single game they will said it's the joystick fault :D
