I know that it didn't have many good games, (the only good game I had for mine was AvP) but seen as I've just come across the Virtual Jaguar GCC/SDL emulator while looking for Lynx reviews, would it be possible?

Apparently the emu has been ported to linux.

The souce is available to download on their website.

What website? Heh..
Anyways, there is a cool ideas and other wishes section of the messageboard.

From what I understand, the Atari Jaguar is difficult to emulate, and their emulators are not as advanced as the SNES. The Atari Jaguar is also more powerful, has 5 processors, including some 64 bit co-processors, which will be extremely difficult to emulate on a handheld.

The Jaguar is more powerfull than snes and as such would be more difficult to emulate at good speeds. If the Jaguar's software library was worth it (is it?) then yeah - it would be great to have even halfspeed Jaguer emu.

Not that I'm against the Jaguar but there is relatively not much to play with this machine.

I agree that our system doesn't have the ponies to achieve fullspeed emulation, but it wouldn't be a terrible pet project to have. It certainly seems *possible* to emulate jaguar, to some degree, on our handheld. But no, I don't think it would ever be something really playable. Not even close to as playable as the desktop versions aren't.

But sometimes emulation isn't about the speed as much as the challenge.

Jag had a fair number of decent titles that really didn't make it to other systems. I have good memories of the system. (and pleanty of bad) It was a powerful system for its era, and certainly quite an underdog--you'd think if anything THIS forum would cut on it a little less.

i have a jaguar and about 6 games, the only one any good is Defender 2000 which you can play the same titles on other platforms anyway, i really didnt like the jag ;/

really? What other system did defender 2000 come out for?

Tempest 2000 came out for Saturn, and eventually PC, but I didn't think Defender 2000 ever made the same leap. I wasn't a fan of d2k anyway.

Oh, boy. Considering Jaguar is 64-bit AND uses 5 processors, never gonna happen.

Before you argue that it's just two 32-bit processors and is not 64 bit at all, know that you've gotten your facts wrong, and go do some research and get the info from recources that are actually reliable, not stuff that came from old magazines that enjoyed Jag-bashing.

Yeah, Jag on GP2X isn't a realistic expectation.

Even a 'proof of concept' emulator would be cool, the Virtual Light Machine would be nifty even at a very low framerate. :)

Looking at link I would risk to argue that Jaguar isn't really "64 bit machine" at all. At least processor wise as there are inside just two "32 bit risc" (at around 26MHz) and one old good 68000 (at 13MHz). The "64 bitness" is due to 64 bit memory controler and its blitter and object processor. I don't know much about those but imho for emulating them using the 32bits of gp2x should be sufficient as the gp2x has great clock advantage. Still to perfomance is lot more than just raw power and perhaps Jaguar's coprocesors are to tricky to do properly.
