Ideas For The Second Edition?

I'm talking about little changes that can't be done in firmware, but not so big that it would be GP3X. Here are a few of mine.

1. Notches in the case to attach 3rd party accessories. They would be similar to how the iPod Mini and GBA/GBA SP have them. Maybe on the EXT port and above the screen.

2. Lithium ion rechargable batteries. I don't need to say why. Maybe have the same form factor as 2 AA batteries.

3. Power from USB. Is there enought mA? And have it rechargable from it.

EDIT:
4. A dimmer knob to help save battery. (Although this could be done as a mod)

You can buy high capacity lithium AA rechargables.

As for the other stuff, you're asking for a lot. USB powered, I think not.

I wish there would be a Dpad instead of that stick

Much as I find this thread difficult to comprehend, the GP2X just being launched.

1) LOL, no. Obviously the news involving iPods propriatry interface vs new microsoft standard all the range, but really proper SDIO would be what I expect(from linux not GP2X devs) and I suspect this is already on the cards.

2) Batteries are available everywhere, with batteries I expect to be playing with my GP2X in a years time, with no reduction in battery life. In fact I expect to gain battery life, through imporved software and battery technology.

3) yeah well we all wanted that one, but a power supply wouldn't kill me *grumble*

I so suspect tweaks in the future, although I suspect they will be fairly dull, more memory etc. Although with linux. I expect competing/complementry!!?? devices in other forms to appear.

No D-Pad ever! Improved Joystick maybe(if at all)

why is there only one SD slot? there looks to be room for about 5...

at least give us two. or an sd and a cf/microdrive

1. I don't mean anything in the software. I'm talking more along the lines of howGBA have little notches near the Link cable port. Just a little hole that something like a screen protector, case, or other accessor can use.

2. Li-ion would make the GP2X smaller. As for gained battery life we will have gains with the firmware updates yeah. But for imporved battery techology thats what Li-ion is for, unless your talking about the spent urainum batteries ot diesel turbine batteries I've heard of. I'm not in a hurry for those anytime soon.

I don't think this askng alot, hell i'm not even asking really. Just thought a little brainstorming on the next version would help the Devs of the hardware know what we want. I'm not nagging or complaining or demanding anything. And in a way this is the best time to start thinking about the next version because it's fresh in everybodies mind. Alot of people have just gotten theirs and now that they got it and played around with it, they had the thought "You know what would be cool".

As for Craigx and the other devs. Not that they don't have other things to worry about, but now is the time to start planning or at the very least brainstorming. Thats what I would do if I were running a business that dealt in the tech gadget world.

EDIT:
How about this for improved Joystick. Are the buttons on the GP2X pressure sensitive like the xbox controllers? If you add pressure sensors on the joystick you could get more then 8 directions.

There isn't going to be any second edition of the gp2x for at least 1 or 2 years.

It's financial suicide. Does a company really want a few thousand unit being sent back to them? Fuck no.

If you mean the successor to the "first edition". The Hardware is set in stone. There will be no changes.

What about this "second release" in ealry january? Ofcource they would not make any vital changes, but maybe just some minor ajustments? I even heard about gamepark perhaps replacing the "joystick" with a more d-pad-style one and offering a replacement one for everyone that already got the unit.

Thats the "official" release. But a replacement stick would just be loverly.

But seriously if there was anything done worth the replacement my gp2x would be sent back in a second.

Yes I mean the successor to the "first edition" if there even is one. None of the things that I mentioned besides the joystick has that much to do with the main board. Just a slightly different case and the inclusion of a Li-ion battery. You could rought the power from the usb to the controller for the Li-ion battery with out much change.

I thought I beat this to death in the other threads. I already own the sucessor to the 'first edition'.
see:

my main difference is the lack of the words 'first edition' on the case. but if you notice the led covers for the power/"battery" indicator, they're white vs. clear.

but there are your second edition 'improvements'. They rock

You mean putting the old one on ebay and buying the new one right? Unless I am mistaken nobody was selling them with the promise of free hardware upgrades.

No Offence but I want to shoot anyone who want a lithium battery in a GP2X.
The issue has been covered so much as to why its a supid idea, not just on this board but on the GP2X homepage its just not worth talking about.

A better plan would be to make room for another two AA bateries making 4 in total. THis would boost the Ah immensly.

Nintendo has a patent on the D-pad (or more specifically, the cross-style D-pad). Hence why you don't see consoles that have a D-pad, only variants. For example, the Playstation series gets around this limitation by making each direction a separate button and the Xbox series has a round pad with raised bevels in the shape of a D-pad.

Fuck li-ion. Do you ever hear of the problems ipod owners have when the stupid specially made battery dies? Do you want to send your GP2X back to Korea to replace a built in battery? I sure as hell dont. And if GPH discontinues the GP2X someday and you cant get batteries for it it becomes a brick. No thanks.

The only way I would accept Li-ion is if they made the device accept BOTH types. If they do it like the Xbox 360 controllers (the Xbox 360 controller accepts AA batteries but also accepts a Li-ion pack in the same spot) then that would be ok otherwise MEH! I wonderif those Xbox 360 controller packs could be modded for GP2X, Hmmm.

The playstation/PSP pad is awful, I would rather have the GP2X stick.

All Li-ion batteries go dead someday, quicker if you don't charge them right in the first place. The same goes for all rechargable batteries. They all have some fault. But why do you think there in everything. Laptops, cellphones, GBA SP. All the digital equipment that uses rechargable batteries I can think of uses Li-ion because there the best of all the rechargables. The horroris nothing more then a few bitchie loud people who don't know who batteries work. Hell I fucked up my first charge with my ipod. You know what I did? I replaced it! Very easy longer life then the deafult battery and you can't even tell I opened it up.

EDIT:
If the GP2X did have a Li-ion battery it would most likely come right off. The only reason the ipod doesn't do that is because they were trying to make it as small as possible. This can be argued as a good or bad thing, but I can be sure it's not the same concern in this case

powered usb(i can dream, usb wifi!!), built in battery(1.2vX2 is just not enough power), a standard power jack(that whole inverting the ground is lame, i wanna go into radioshack w/ a gp2x and out with something that wont cost me a fortune in memory-killed rechargeables), and a d-pad(ultimate snes pad reproduction!)

just a thought (yeah flame me) bluetooth!

never really tried the psp pad but I LOVE the psx d-pad.
I'll take the psx dpad over the gp2x stick any day.
