Second Thoughts

you seem to have NO idea why you'd want a gp2x, so you shouldn't get one. you'll only windup becoming yet another whinging moaner complaining on these boards when you realize what this device truely is.

imo the gp2x is NOT a handheld designed for massmarket plugin-and-play-gamer-lamer consumers such as yourself. It is a *homebrew* device first and foremost, along similar lines and philosophy as Andre LaMothe's X-GameStation (but rather more slinky and a little more accessible to the average Joe) This basically means it's a handheld device that has been uniquely designed for the pleasure of nerdy/technically minded coders to play about with. It's made for people who understand hardware a little and who are not PHASED by what are basically small fixable s/w related problems. 90% or the problems you have seen people like yourself moaning about on these boards since the release of the gp2x are not REAL issues in the minds of genuine homebrewers. We know that with a little effort the gp2x's HOMEBREW coders and community will be able to fix just about all of them. It's only the impatient gamer-lamers such as yourself that run around with your arms in the air crying because coders at GamePark have set the brighteness and contrast levels too high in the firmware screen intialization code. This kind of "problem" is a non-issue to homebrews because we understand it can be fixed in time.

Basically, people like you should not be dabbling in quirky homebrew-based devices. As a previous poster suggested, i think you'd be far better off grabbing yourself a Nintendo NDS and Supercard. That way you can download yourself Yoshi and Wario Mario Adventures in Lala-land. Everyone will be happy and *WE* won't have to hear you bitching because you naively expected to be able to play XBox CD images on you gp2x.

Get off your high horse, man. The guy made a very concise post asking why he should get one of these. There was no bitching. I guess lately the friendly community would definetly not be a reason to get a gp2x. I first came to these boards back when I got my gp32, and the boards were very friendly and welcoming. Now I see more and more a-holes like yourself acting elitist and stand-offish to newcomers.

I've been waiting for the release of the gp2x for about 3 months now and I'm extremly happy with it. I think that's because I dismissed all GP's promotional PMP BS, read the specs and KNEW exactly what I was getting: a rather nifty open-dev game device with the added bonus of being able (but not IDEALLY suited) to playing mp3s and the odd movie.

That'll be spot on for me as well, couldnt of said it better nyx :)

nyx you are a troll and an complete idiot, you made half assed assumptions about someone you dont even know because i was having second thoughts about buying a gp2x, when i might have had something more important to spend my money on and just wanted a bit of enthusiasm put back into me to enforce me getting one.

and just so you know, im CCNA, a+ i-net+ network+ project+ security+ and server+, so if im not "technically minded" enough, i dont know who is.

thanks delgrego

also, whats all this about a second edition? i do NOT want to be hearing about a second edition just after i bought my first! have they even said there will be a second edition or are you just saying that because the 32 had a second edition and you think this one will?

also
people seem to think the gp2x is reserved for developers only, and anyone who doesnt develop doesnt deserve one and should fuck off and get a psp

in the few weeks ive been here ive seen the friendlyness turn to shit and its probably because of trolls like nyx

Hear, hear!

There is no need for people to be rude. It is a pity that the recent influx of new people to this marvellous community has included one or two who manifestly feel that their own sense of relative technical superiority gives them the right to talk down to others with such mean-spirited condescension  I hope that this isn't a sign of things to come and that these boards will eventually get back to being more friendly like they used to be, maybe when certain people have come to understand what sort of behaviour is expected of them.

This community is fortunately blessed by the presence of a number long-standing devs who are well respected, not only because of their sublime talent and expertise, but also due to the unpretentious friendly way with which they speak to and help others whose depth of understanding is so much less than their own :)

Wow...people really get angry over a innocent little thread like this. If you just ordered your GP2X now, and you regret it, email them saying to cancel it, and wait for the 2nd edition. I'm going to wait on this, so I can pick up my fresh perfect GP2X, download full speed emulators, ports, homebrewed games and not have to worry. Yeah I'm dreaming, but is it illegal ;)

Yes, I know what you mean. I made an effort to at least give Paradox an honest answer to his question, yet one or two people here seem more interested in launching some kind of combined character assasination on me. Sad really.

It's not a character assassination. You are what you post, my friend. Saying things like this:
It's only the impatient gamer-lamers such as yourself that run around with your arms in the air crying
and this:
Everyone will be happy and *WE* won't have to hear you bitching
is not giving someone an honest answer, it's being a dick. Companies that manufacture devices like this cannot survive from developers alone, they have to also appeal to a larger audience of consumers. I applaud your abilities as a developer, but seriously dude, get over yourself.

hear hear! im sick and tired of this kind of shit, there are like 2 oposing groups, the people who have serious superiority complexes and bitch about everything and the people who are total fucktards and need help to wipe their own ass. these type of people are oppisit ends of the spectrum and make up maybe half the group as a whole, the other 50% are people lke me, who just want the damn thing and are happy to have it when it gets here, and at lease have a vague idea what its all about and know how to use it!

okay, the second edition is the next run of gp2xs from gph. they withdrew production of the first edition because of the numerous problems users have encountered. currently, gbax and gp32z are selling the first edition units, and not the second. which is fine for devs and people who know that they're getting a pretty compromised unit. if you withdrew your order from them (sorry, and ouch) and gave it to lik-sang, they will ship the second edition to you when they get it. so, in essence you would pre-order a second edition. Or, i'm sure you could email the distributor and tell them to hold off on your order until they get the second edition in. perhaps you could work that out.
read what lik-sang says here, at lik-sang.

I'm not a dev, and i would've been happy with the first edition as i am (hopefully) with the second. get it earlier and have to iron out problems as they come, or wait and get a more complete unit. that's been the question for those who haven't preordered or ordered theirs yet.

to triton: you think you're the nice middleman because you say people 'bitch' and call them 'fucktards'? how about staying neutral and answer the original question for chrissake. you become just as bad as them when you call them shoddy names. you are no different.

I'll say this because I think it bares repreating. Being an early adopter by nature is not an easy life, but you always know what you;re infor when you get your hardware. There are bound to be hurdles in the begining, problems, issues but as an early adopter you accept that to an extent for the ability to be one of the first to own and use the equipment.

If you can't feel better about your purchase after taking that into concideration that you aren't really the type with an early adopter mentality.

Always concider this before preordering something otherwise you risk just being someone who rains on other people's parade.

This is my view on why I would want a GP2X, DESPITE not knowing all the hardware specs precisely, and despite not being as "technically minded" as some...

First and foremost, to play old games away from home, and also homebrewn games.

Secondly, I really want to try and write a game again. Been a while since the last time I made a serious crack at making a game for a non PC platform. The GP2X is ideal for this purpose (from my less technical standpoint) simply because it uses a common media rather than specialised propriety media (like GBA carts, which mean that if you do make a game for GBA, only other homebrewers who have GBA flash carts and linkers will play your game on actual intended hardware. And some pirates), and because it's pretty powerful. Personally, I don't really care about the absolute details of what's under the hood just yet. At the moment, I can safely say that I'm unlikely to either have the knowledge, or the need, to use both processors and run my game in HH mode. Of course, to more advanced developers, they can take a look at the specs and decide more specifically that it is or isn't a good machine for homebrew. For me, I doubt any games I may make will require any more power than running under Linux on GP2X would give them.

Third and finally, it ideally suits me as a portable film player, as I only have very few things I'd actually want to play on it in any case, and I won't really care about poor video quality as long as the sounds OK. As far as music's concerned, I already have a CD player which can play normal CDs and CD-R(w)s burnt with MP3 encoded tracks, so I won't be using GP2X for that...

Please just stop being so elitist, there's no need for it. There's absolutely no reason why non developers should stay away from GP2X, as long as they realise that it isn't quite as simple to use as a Gameboy or whatever, and can live with that. Calling people "gamer lamers" just because they have a different experience of gaming is just plain arrogance. On the other hand, whilst I don't have one yet, so I can't comment on ease of use myself, from what I've been reading, once you've got over any initial problems, it is pretty simple to use... (although of course, there are many problems being reported that you need to either send the unit back for, or DIY, which are not so welcome to people like me who can't solder to save their lives and don't really want to void the warranty)

EDIT: And yes, I'm probably going to wait for a second edition now I know... especially if it's likely they will fix the problems (hardware related- I can live with fixable software issues)
