my experiences with the gp2x so far have not been good. I can't play any emulators, everytime i listen to mp3s it freezes at about 40 seconds. AHHH im using a SanDisk 256mb disk, I upgraded the firmware too

The bexels that came with it, soem duracells, and some energisers (all new out of the box)

Those are Alkaline btteries right? Try some good rechargable ones (might find some in a digital camera, or just buy them) them reprt back :)

Did you update the firmware properly? You updated the images and ran the patcher utility?Do you get the 1.0.1 second bootup screen?Thats my guess on the mp3's crashing. As for the emulators, have you installed the sdl libraries?

I actually did install the firmware right cuz i get all that good stuff. I can get a good minute and a half ona song just letting it sit on my desk

the thing is .. and i don't mean this in an impertinent way .. the bins are still pretty fresh on the gp2x. it is pretty nice hardware, right for the funk, and presents a rather appealing hack platform, for the price. please, don't be so hasty .. there are good and wonderful things, yet to come, and there have already been advances worth the price of admission, twice over, if you ask me.

wherease with PSP, you might get a 'bundle', in gp2x you get community effort, as valid as it could possibly be only because some cared to give it a go, and write some code.

by my reckoning, there are now over, about, 5,000 playable games on the gp2x hardware, give or take a few bugs. thats a huge leap. don't be blind to the rich media that it is ..

I got some energizers and the 2x ate them up like candy. I got these

Probably because they are 1800mah. Have you tried a higher rating? Like 2500mah.

Ahem, 1600mah and panasonic too. He/she needs to get some GP2500mah or some Anesmann 2500mah photo or 2600mah digitals.

The biggest difference is type, not capacity.

Sure, the ocean has enough water to put out a very large forest fire but if that water is being transported there by 3 skinny geeks with tiny buckets we'd be in big trouble by the time it was out.

Its not that the batteries don't have the capacity, but rather cannot deliver the amount of charge necessary for a period of time consistently, in order to get the job done.

This is the difference between NiMH and Alkaline, as I've said in many other threads.

Alkaline is better for clocks and slow, long period drain applications. NiMH is better for the devices that cannot guzzle enough.

to tell ya guys the truth. the battery issue kinda sucks.

I can understand that Alkaline won't last as long as rechargable Nimh.

but regular AA batteries SHOULD at least give you bug free playtime. acknowleding that it will not last as long as 2500 NIhm.

but for the time it is running/have juice. it should be able to run the device without problems. considering that the the gp2x said it runs on AA battery.

I personally would be P1ssed off if I find out I whould have to go out and buy 2500mah battery because the Gp2x can't run as well on the stack of AA alkaline and 1800mah recharagble I have already.

ohh well hope GH can clears these things out soon.

as much as I wanted to get the gp2x now I'll wait for maybe 3 months before buying.

Just on the battery discussion, and just to put *a* viewpoint across (not necessarily mine, just *a* (heck I don't even have a gp2x yet)). Isn't one of the big plusses of a device taking AA batteries, that you can buy them anywhere in the world ?

i.e. you are on hols, you forgot your charger BWAH ! Good job this baby takes AAs. Hey, wait a moment, this device that takes AAs won't run of alkaline batteries, what gives.

If you take away the "buy them anywhere" factor all you are left with is the ability to charge whilst still playing, as opposed to a built in rechargable battery.

Another interesting point of note, when I bought my pal C64 DTV, it specifically indicates that the device should not be used with rechargeable AAs but should only be used with alkaline AA's (although I believe this revolves around the voltage - most rechargables are 1.2v, and Alkalines are 1.5v).

You can also buy photo batteries everywhere... Every tourist location is guaranteed to have them.

Oh right, so it doesn't have to be rechargeables ? Just at a minimum AA batteries capable enough (such as those they recommend for digital cameras, I assume thats whats meant by photo batteries).

Thats fair enough then, given what the batteries are powering.

No, you can buy all batteries marked for high energy/photography use and they should last a few hours. I think there are NiMHs that are not rechargable or something...

it realy isnt gph's fault that your aa batterys cant deliver the needed power.

I beg to differ. Some of the problems concerning the batteries is the issue of the soldering of the contacts to the pcb. ( search for my other posts and let me know what you think).
Another thing can some let us know if the screen flickering issues go away if you use a psu instead of batteries.
