i have tried geting my gp32 to connect to my computer after the smc card was wiped clean but it wont connect right when i turn on my gp32 i hear a tone telling me its connected( i have windows xp) but the gp32 link says failed to open usb port i currently use the standard driver right now but someone suggested to use the firefly one (sry forgot who) so i did but how would i go about changing it also i don't have the money right now more are smc card reader

When you get that option press select to activate the SMC test, if it still doesn't work I suspect you may have what I like to call "Twimfy's horrible life problem" Basically it means you're GP32 lead is screwed and sometimes the GP32 will malfunction and bring up the message you're seeing. My solution is to stand the GP32 upright so the screen is facing you, plug the cable in firmly and with your thumb on the right hand side of the cable block sticking out of the unit press firmly left and hold it there then try it. I think some of the sockets or plugs just get worn down with use (mine used to be fine) or they just unluckily come like that.

Let me know how you get on, you often have to try a few times to get this to work.

Just get an SMC R/W if you have a faulty cable as a reader/writer is SO much better than using the link software. Your GP32 is just mounted as a drive.

Borrow 1 or you might be able to get a cheap one for $10 (if you are lucky enough to live in the US, where everything is cheap)
