if i could find an gig SD card for less than 50$ shipped i would be in heaven, sheapest i have seen is 54$ with free shipping

Within the US you can get either two 512MB cards or one 1GB from Newegg for < $50 shipped, or all three for < $90.

Link (Edge 512MB, Kingston 512MB, EP 1GB...or get the Kingston Elite Pro 1GB/Corsair 1GB for higher transfer speeds if you're loading full movies, etc.)

Is this site legit!???? holy shit those are cheap :p Ebay no more hello this site! like wow!

aw crap i just noticed it seems to be US only.. Any1 know one that has 1gig sd cards that cheap availiable to Canada.?

Newegg doesn't ship outside the U.S.

Also I have a 1gb filled with movies. I will have to re-encode them at a lower screen size for obvious reasons ;)

No you don't. The GP2X automatically resizes in hardware for the internal screen. When you use the TV-out you get full resolution. So you get the best of both worlds.

For real? I thought I read on another topic that said we had to scale down DIVX stuff for TV OUT, at least, with the upmost being 720 by 480. So, if that's false, does this entail that the 2X should take care of the rest with auto-scaling for both the 2X's screen and TV-Out?

Thats right, you can throw pretty much anything on the card and the gp2x will play it (except for ac3 audio and wmv) it will scale to the resolution of the playback device.

Only reason to reencode is to save space. I'm squeezing a few movies so that i can get 8 on a 1 gig card.

Got a 150x High Speed 2GB SD Card coming, hopfully will be here soon to use with my GP2X when that arrives, can't wait.

Question: You can actually fit 8 properly sized movies on a 1GB SD Card? Is that with sound? What encoding are you using? I assume these are feature films - is that correct? What software are you using to help you along?

And, to the general public (I'm afraid this is redundant, though we should really start a thread with this as its sole purpose) what's the best video re-sizer / audio adjuster for various OSs? (I'm on Linux, but I would think at least roughly half the board is still on Windows much of the time...)

when you dont need high quality you can easyly fit 120 minutes in 200mb, iam currently encodeing my films to 250mb with divx6, even 180 minute ones, and the qulity is great. definality better than 120mb divx 4 that i was used to at gp32 :)

I'm using Pocket Divx Encoder, PDA option with the quality setting clicked down a couple of times. movies are coming out at about 128mb each.

The movies all look great but the sound seems out by a fraction (on my pda played from sd), it does however only take about 20-30 mins to do a film.

Will try the same experiment with auto gordian knot as well, just to see if it does a better job.

I'm on Linux too. Get avidemux2. It works very much like VirtualDub. I also recommend XviD or another supported mpeg4-type codec at around 300-500kbps for the video, and MP3 or Vorbis audio at 80-128kbps or 48-96kbps, respectively.

I'll be doing a lot of codec trials on my gp2x, and will report on my website ( http://gp2xdev.no-ip.org/gp2x/index.html ) what works and what doesn't out of the box, including an encoding guide specifically for Linux users, in a few days ;) :D

iignotus, sorry I didn't get back to - popped out of town and into weird debate-land adventures.

Anyway, you get the proverbial cookie. That sounds absolutely stupendous. Also, did avidemux have a Windows port? I think I may have tinkered with it (to little effect) some months back...

Empyre, PDE is Win-only, so I'll check out Auto Gordian Knot... Though all the main websites for it seem to have diappeared... hm. At least the SourceForge is around, though I think that is the base project.

Also, is it just my idiocy or is there some reason finding avidemux2 non-rpm packages is tricky? I'm running Slack-based Vector.

I wouldn't say idiocy, you just don't know where to look. I'm on Slackware too and use avidemux all the time :) I'm not sure if Vector has its own package system, but if it's really based on Slackware, you can just installpkg this package right here. Just get the package that is closest to your version of slackware. The base website is also an amazing site for all packages Slackware.

Personally, image and sound quality doesn't matter much when viewing movies on a handheld. So, my settings when I converted several episodes of FireFly:

Target size: 64 MegaBytes
Video: Xvid
Width: 320
Audio: MP3, 64kbps, mono

They look and sound good enough, and at 64 megs per episode (128 for the 80-minute-long pilot), that's 96 megabytes per hour. Five hours of video and still plenty of room for Roms and DooM/Quake/DukeNukem.

Currently, I'm using AutoGK and Handbreak. I like AutoGK because it lets me specify the audio as mono, and I like Handbreak because it lets me set the sample rate lower... so neither of them are quite the perfect solution for me. That said, if the GP2x ever gets H.264 support, I'll be throwing everything through Handbreak again.

Speaking of H.264, is there any reason the GP2x couldn't handle H.264?

I believe they couldn't afford to officially support the codec. Indeo is quite uptight about that kind of thing. An unsupported codec of that kind might show up from someone I'm sure. At least I hope so.

Just tried that Pocket Divx Encoder, It looks like a really handy program! Just took a 400MB Xvid down to 95MB, however it wont play on my PC (got the latest K-Lite Codec Pack), It brings up a error with the actual divx5 codec but I'll see how it fairs on the GP2X when I get it.

Could someone please test if h.264 works, if need be I will send you an h.264 file to test.

Right now I am just using regular mpeg-4, because I find it the easiest to encode with (I use a mac) and can't find any really good programs to do divx6 and I don't believe there is much of a quality difference, but I am probally wrong.

As far as encoding goes, with mpeg-4 I like 4mb-6mb a sec (for hollywood movies) and with H.264 I like 3-4mb a sec (they achually look better then the mpeg-4). Someone REALLY needs to get H.264 to work if it already doesn't, it has great quality, easy to use, and well supported. Plus it looks like the next gen HD Discs will be using it, making it a great choice.
