MAME WIP Sources?

I think there have been three or four attempts at porting MAME to the GP32. Since it has been a while since any news of these attempts has come out, would it be possible for the coders who have suspended work to post their WIP source?

I might could get one of them running, given a little time.

Since mame has a tendency to appear on everything, and usually quite quickly, id assume there was something fundamental holding back a gp32 version

If im right, could someone enlighten me as to what it is? :)

Ram apparently for large games like metal slug but i'd want it for the smaller games anyway oh + does anyone have any WIP for genesis or CPS - 1emulator

Mame would be nice even if only a few drivers where supported to allow the use of some of the classics. I am still hoping that the cps-1 emulator is still in development and will be somewhat playable.

MAME is not one emulator, it's a couple dozen of them. There's emulation code for each of the many different processors used in arcade machines. Sometimes 2 or 3 different ones are used for one game. So each one of those emulators has to be converted to work with the GP32. It's not an easy process, and the GP32 doesn't have the power to emulate several processors at once unless they're slow, and the code is well optimized. Not to mention the plethora of screen resolutions, refresh rates, and sound chips.

IMHO, the way to do MAME on the GP32 would be to only attempt the emulators that have a chance to run with the available horsepower.

In fact, it may be better to port the emulators individually. Get the common interface working, then port say, the atari emulator. Make that one program (fxe). Then, port another, make it a seperate fxe, and so on.

This approach would limit use of scarce RAM.

Well not really if it was all in 1 emu it would just let u select which game then only load that driver. But i think you are right they should export the specific game hardware so that they can then play games that work on that hardware :)

Frankly, I would be pretty happy with the Atari games, at least for a start. The vector graphics games (Asteroids, Battlezone, Star Wars, Omega Race, etc.) should smoke on the GP32!

Maybe it would be best to implement MAME in a similar way that it was implemented on the Dreamcast? You would have to select the driver from the startup screen (atari, konami etc) and then select an applicable rom.

I'm not too fussed getting the 68k MAME drivers ported over, the gp32 probably won't have the horse power to do them justice... but games earlier than that would be fantastic!!

Xcade is nice, but it's not MAME. There are what, less than a dozen games supported (in the GP32 version)?

With MAME the total of supported games runs at 2500+. Now, some (most?) may never run on the GP32 at playable speeds, but several hundred should.

Dammit, I want to play portable Battlezone without having to steal my sons GBA!

Yes the question of MAME keeps rolling on. The best idea would be seperate emulators for games that use the same driver. Most Z80 based games should work. i don't thinks games utilising anything more powerful than mc68000 would work so well. Sound hardware could be another issue, as we all know.
Let's hope that someone might be prepared to make a start on a project like this. A thing to remeber is that everybody likes different games and not everything could be done at once. So maybe a poll is required to give a direction to start in :)
Let's be sensible about this folks ;)

All good things come to those who wait..............

Ok let me say this 1 more time:

craigx posted this on the other site

Hiya,

After seeing Rylehs mame progress, and a serious lack of time i decided to concentrate on doom.

Ryleh has a brilliant 200 game version of MAME which he will release soon i hope.

I didn't get much further than adding the pacman and phoenix hardware to the 8080 thing plus it was running at weird speeds (too fast).
