At a later date will you be looking at using the latest roms with Mame GP32 or will you continue using the 0.34 romset?

:)

he has no choice but to use 0.34 roms, gp32 will never be powerful enough to run the latest roms I mean come on those roms require ultra fast cpu's, specialised graphics cards etc. Its a wonder your pc can just about handle them. If you want to play those roms you have two choices

Wait for the Xbox 360 or ps3 and chip it (which is not going to be possible for some time. Stick the roms with mame software on cd and enjoy

get latest version of mame for pc and enjoy

Simple

Do wanna tell us that in the near future a GP Mame version will play the newest romset? :) I think this would be better because you won't have to hassle around with ClrMame anymore...

I think that in order to do this Franxis would have to switch to a later copy of the MAME source. I believe that doing so would probably mean that MAME would run slower on the gp32. Besides which there is still plenty to do porting MAME 0.34 to the gp32. Vector game support for example..

He uses .34 because it's old and small (ish), so runs quickly enough to be useable on the GP.
Mame is famously bloated, code and patches being added constantly instead of the core being re-written. This allows fast updates, but requires more processing power.
So we'll likely have mame .34 in MameGP32 for good. Franxis' latest release featured some stripping away of superfluous code to make it a little quicker. But if you want wider compatibility with later romsets you'll probably be out of luck.
I don't mind, I only play the really old-school games anyway. Though I do wish Up n Down ran properly!

Absolutely and finding the latest romsets is also alot easier (which can only be good for testing purposes ;) ).

I understand why Franxis is using the 0.34 source but I'm sure even some of the old-school roms have been redumped since. I'm not after later games (they don't interest me that much) as I'm an old-schooler myself :). If would just be nice to use an optimized engine with the latest romsets. Which ever way it goes, I'm very happy :D with what we have got already.

:)

I think what we have at the moment is awesome. The only thing that I would like to see added is vector support for games like Star Wars. But even without this, gpMAME still ROCKS..

Yes, i will continue using mame 0.34 romsets, because my mame port is based on mame 0.34. If i use newer mame version, it would be not compatible with 710 games... because newer mame version needs more hardware resources and gp32 has limited cpu power and only 8 mb of ram.

But i will try to add later game drivers (of newer mame versions) to my port. I will try to build a mixed clrmame pro dat of old mame 0.34 and some romsets of newer mame versions... I would like to play Sichuan 2, Super Pang, Son of Phoenix, etc... We will see... I will have to retouch the drivers to be compatible backwards to mame 0.34. But i think some people could try with this to add support for more games, i think it should be not so hard to do it...

Also i have pending the possibility to add more mame 0.34 romsets, i.e. Rainbow Islands, Rastan, Robocop, ... but i will have to trick the drivers to eat less memory...

Also there is the possibility to add assembly z80 and 68000 cores to improve the performance... but i have no access to such cores (and i have tried to get them...)...

If i get some help from you, MAME will have no limits to be better on GP32... xD

Regards.

Having re-read my original post, I think I may have worded my question wrong. What I meant to say was, would you be using the latest dumps of these roms (i.e currently 0.97). I was in no way asking for more roms, especially newer games. It's just that these roms are more closer to the original arcade classics.

I hope you are able to obtain both the z80 and 68000 assembly cores, these can only increase Mame GP32's performance.

:)

Newer game drivers would be nice. Honestly though I think it would make sense to get the games that we have to work fully before moving on to more. There are MANY games that still have NO sound or incomplete or bad sound like Zaxxon, Space invaders, Donkey kong, Berzerk, Galaxian etc. I was hoping that these would be improved first.

I think these won't be improved...

The main problem is not the samples support. In that list i think only Zaxxon need samples. The main problem si the OPL FM chip support, the GP32 doesn't have an FM chip. I have tested that now all sounds are played, then the missing sounds are FM...

Donkey kong, Donkey Kong Jr. used samples, as well as Space invaders (there are single game emus on the GP32 that use samples on Space invaders), Galaxian, and I think Phoenix at one time. I remember searching for samples and getting them for MAME (I think .29 maybe?) on my PC years ago.

There should be some solution for these old games. It would be a real shame for these to remain silent forever on the GP32. Even if it meant a single machine emu for each game, these are some of the BEST classics.

... and Asteroids .

:)

I've only just found this area of the forums  . Silly me. Anyway, what I wanted to tell you is that these games will be supported in the next release. I'd recommend Not Emulating the sound for Star Wars though, as it runs much more smoothly without it.
