Well, as you probably know, I've been hacking away trying to get SD support into the gp32 via the smc connector, and after blowing up my gp32, I give up on that idea.

I've now partially fixed my gp32 - as in, everything works apart from the smartmedia interface - I can't read or write to the smartmedia card. I can, however, still upload images via the usb port as I use Multifirmware (thanks to Mr.Spiv!)

Looking at the whole thing from a different perspective, I've managed to read the first sector from an SD card by interfacing it to the ext port. I've no idea of speed at the moment, I'm just shocked that it works at all :)

Wow - I'm impressed - especially that you still persist after blowing up your GP32 - I would have been gutted and given up. Good luck

do you use a card reader connected to serial or what?
(or is bare wires to the contacts at the moment? :D )

nice discovery but as tarka said:
"do you use a card reader connected to serial or what?"

I've only got a single SD card, so I didn't fancy the "solder wires directly to card" approach. Trying to buy just a SD card holder is silly money - £10 or so, unless you order thousands. So I bought a £3 card reader from Ebuyer, and then removed the SD card holder from that and adapted it to my needs :)

The interface to the SD card is serial, but it's not the same serial as used in chatboards and the like (SCI), but rather SPI, which is a three wire interface with one of the wires being a clock running at upto 25Mhz (currently running slower than that).

Electronics wise, there's currently nothing more than a GP32 EXT connector, a SD card connector, and a few resistors, so it's mega easy to make at the moment. Whether this will prove reliable is another thing however :)

It's now 10pm, so time to wrap it up until next weekend.

Ahh.. I was just about to ask why not using SPI ;) This is indeed interesting.
