I got spyware on my PC while researching for my fashion essay. 5 pop-ups came up and inserted "about:blank" as my home page. I can't access my email acount while its there as it will just go back to the home page.
I've used ad-aware and microsoft anti spyware. They claim to get rid of it and microsoft anti spyware gave me the option to reset all my present webpages (homepage etc.) I done this and it went for the past day. But now it's come back and everytime I remove it, it returns.

All I know about the spyware is that about blank is a browser hijacker and then there where files called claria.

Anyone had any experience with this.

Ps. I've downloaded Firefox, should I just install it or will the spyware infect that too.

The spyware shouldn't have any effect on Firefox, and it is better than IE. You might still experience computer slowdown etc though, as much Adware doesn't require IE to be running.

Try Spybot, and if all else fails, run Ad-Aware, Spybot, and MS Antispyware in safe mode.

Have you by chance installed anything such as KaZaA?

No, I haven't I hate kazaa. It came about with a site about fabrics during the war.

Try "Hijack This!" .. it can get rid of almost anything but be warned that it is also an advanced tool where you manually remove 'possible' spyware/malware objects.

Hijack this! is good actually. Just manually search for the title of each running/attached process in Google, and it will generally reveal what it malicious and what is safe.

Thanks, I deleted everything thats related to about blank but still have the spyware. All other entries were part of msn or avg anti virus software.
I'm currently using Firefox, I must say how good it is, seems fasters and not effected by the spyware.
As for slowdown, I have experienced now what so ever on my laptop.

i'd recommend the following:

run adaware and allow it to reset if it wants to
reset again and launch safe mode, run adaware again.
download avast anti virus and then do a full boot scan, will take a while but should sort you out.

if you do all three you should be free of spyware.

anyone thought about malware in the ram? can be quite immune i think...
my suggestion is to start the pc from a completely secure boot disc (can be a floppy from a guaranteed not infected pc or windows CD - not quite sure bout the windows cd though) and run your anti virus stuf again.
