just wondering what people suggest as far as games go that don't need saves (not saving highscores is fine though!)

I like Puzzle Bobble Mini\Bust-a-Move Pocket, Magical Drop Pocket (a Parodius\r-type\shooter-like game) and Crush Roller (Pac Man-like, another game you might be interested in).
As for the fighting games, Fatal Fury, King of Fighters, SNK vs. Capcom and the Megaman Power Battles games are really good. The Megaman one being my favourite of course. The Megaman one is actually called Rockman Battle & Fighters as it is in Japanese, although you can probably figure out what the menus mean.

has there been a new or updated emulator forthe neo-geo pocket in the past year or year and a half. I had a gp32 awhile back and remember the ngp being failry poorly emulated. What is the best ngp emulator out right now. I have a band new flu which has made it's way to the states but I havn't been able to get ahold of it yet so I am really looking for some stuff to play with that has come out since I last had a gp32.

Not stunning, but getting better with every release... it runs at a good speed though (more than enough for me to comfortably play a couple of hours of MS:First Mission on when testing), but lacks sound (which is annoying) and saves (which is even more so - I just don't feel as though what I'm playing is secure without some saves).

NGPC emulation is plenty good enough atm as a curiosity - much as, say, Genesis was pre-cyclone (games ran, often well, but no sound or saves and a high frameskip meant that it didn't appeal so much to me), but don't throw out your NGPC yet.

Magical Drop Pocket (a Parodius\r-type\shooter-like game)

I'm sorry but Magical Drop have never been a shmup!
That's more likely a reflexion game ;)

There's a great great shoot on NGPC, but it's call "Cotton" (imo the best game of the machine with Metal Slug 2) ;) hope it can helps :)

oh and I forgot to said that SNK Vs Capcom: MotM is also imo the best fighting game on handled I have played ;)
Sonic is also really great but I stop to play this since DrMd works fine on GP32 ;p

Faselei! (turn-based strategy)

ya thats the game that got me to try out the NGPC Emu on GP32.
I played it for a few straight hours only to find out that the Emu has no saves...

I highly doubt it but if someone got hold of the source code would savestates or even just SRAM saves really be that harrd to implement?

I'm perfectly fine playing without sound..

I mainly advise playing on the original Neo-Geo first or the cabinets. This is because loads of NGPC games are ports of these and it makes you really appreciate them. I advise both the Metal Slug games as said above. But as a special treat I recomment the brilliant port; The Last Blade. :D
