ive got way too much spare time, so im thinking about learning to play guitar. Anyone recommend a good budget electric number, sub £150, bearing in mind ill probably only play it about 3 times.

Get a squier strat, nice guitars for beginners they're normally bout 99- 150 quid some come with mini 10 watt amps, and with work ive got my squier tele customs action down to 2mm at the highest (swapped pickups tho) so they will serve you well for years to come.

If it's an acoustic youre after Crafters and Tanglewoods are always a safe bet, best thing to do is to try and gte a a fairly cheap solid top, you can get a decent enough one for about 150. ;)

What about a Yamaha Pacifica? Or a Epiphone?

Pacificas are great, but I'm not sure if you'll pick one up for that cheap...

Epiphones are also good, but the same applies.

get an epiphone special, they are cheap and are excellent quality.
or, if youre feelin metal-y, go fo a BC Rich warlock! they have a starter kit w/ am and git plus case etc for cheaeeeep :) plus they look awesome.

realistically, go for the epiphone. squiers suck. i have a squier and a Ep. special and the squire is a piece o crap

It all depends on what you want really, pacificas can be picked up for about 250 (you were looking at a 150 budget) but you can get epiphones for cheaper and IMO theyre nicer guitars (depending on what model you get, and the set-up job).

The thing with epiphones is that the bridge saddles need to be turned round on some of the strings to get them to actually tune properly, straight from the factory they wont do this meaning if you have no knowledge of guitars its gonna make a pretty hard instrument to start off with without some sort of prior set-up.

I really recomend you to go down to your local music shop and try some out in your price range, if you have a specialist guitar shop thats even better as they will know the instrument like the back of their hand (hopefully anyway). This gives you a much better idea of what you are buying as you have tried it out and the guitar will normally/should have been set-up already.

If you buy online beware, the instrument you see isn't neccasarily what you get, as you have not tried it out at all its very difficult to say whether you will like what your getting. Buying off ebay is the worst thing to do IMO because they can claim anything and when the guitar arrives the action might be a mile high and the truss might need sorting out. So its up to you but i advise against online buying.

I whole heartedly recomend a squier of some sort theyre cheap, easy to maintain and with a bit of tampering and switchin of the pickups (you dont need to do this if youre just learning) as i did it will rock like a bitch. ;)

The Cheat: If you know you're instument/ the shop you got the squier from did a good job on it then theyre nice. Thing is though is that they're made on the factory line in korea or wherever and some have been put together better than others (maybe closer to the lunch break if youve got a bad one).

So get down to your local guitar shop if your interested in playing, it's the best thing to do as i recomend you try out what youre getting first.

Hope that helps.

@Jcintheus: You won't be frustrated with it, obviously if you get an american made fender or gibson its gonna much more worthwhile, but for 150 you cant get one of them, plus if your learning your not gonna be shredding with it majorly soloing and playing high octane lead licks are you. Think from a learners perspective.

Squires are a wide range, and they dont all suck. One of my guitars is a 1995 Jap Squier Strat, and it's Lovely. Most are now made elsewhere, and they're much lower quality. If you can get an older Squier (made in Japan) then it's worth a shot.

Yamaha Pacifica Yuck. They sound like shit. Get yourself a better sounding guitar. A strat is a good place to start if you get a nice sounding one. I scored myself a Squire strat which sounds like the real deal. Everyone who plays it thinks its a normal strat. Made in japan and my favourite axe :p

Hmmm...............thats the thing with all cheap guitars, the build quality can be good and you can set them up to play really nicely but the elctronics (pickups) are always of shit quality due to them being of fairly low output. This shouldnt be too off putting if your learning though.

Thats probably a good bet, yamaha rgx211, i would advise in you taking it to your local guitar shop for them to give it a quick check over and a stringing.

Edit: Also being a floyd rose style trem dont try restringing yourself first time around get them to show you how to do iy properly, many ppl have messed up their trems doing this resulting in an expensive repair.

Just bought that, what does everyone else reckon? I like the price....
You can't go wrong at that price but take it to a guitar tech to get a checkup as you don't want to be struggling learning to play the guitar only to find some f*cker has sold you a broken guitar eh...

To be honest, if your budget is tight, I'd get a decent acoustic guitar and start on that. Get that right, then progress.

It IS fun shredding like hell when you first start though :p
