I like the sound of the search facility in ipod large range of filters sounds like what i'm after

BUT doesn't it reorganise all your folders into artist/album/track which would render it useles to me as i need my folder structure kept the way it is :(

Only if you tell it to, I like the way it organises though.

Yeah, I'm pretty certain the option to organise your collection is off by deafault but check just in case :p

I mostly play my music by album because most albums have been recorded in a certain order for a reason and IMO sound better that way, so I don't feel the need to organise my music by anything else than artist, album and track.
I'm just using my computer as a cd-player with all music built-in, I navigate the old-fashioned way with a remote-control :)
When you choose to view an album it is sorted by track by default :/

Regardless...while I understand your philosophy I disagree, as some albums have skippable tracks - there is no point in listening to poor tracks so you can reach the better ones. I usually tag my favourite tracks with the appropriate rating and then, regardless of album and track order I can hear the best of an artist's music. Track order doesn't mean shit on a 'Best of' album, and this is like that except I can have more than one CDs' worth of 'best' tracks.

Albums only seem to group an artist's recordings by time (and therefore mood, influences and style), I have doubts about the importance of the order of its individual tracks.

You'd be surprised about how seriously bands/ artists take the order of songs on albums. Some albums tell a story and some songs blend seamlessly into others.

In these situations correct song order in an album is essential.

i use winamp because its very small and fast and there is an enormous selection of skins. wmp is bloated and hard to navigate around and ive never used itunes.

RE songs fading into each other - true, it happens a LOT less in rap music but I can see how it would occur. Most media players now crossfade tracks regardless of their order, ruining this effect.

As for the story... I can also understand that. However after I've 'read the story' by listening to the album in order, I am not going to listen to it from the start each time again and again. I'll just listen to the tracks I want to. If an album is designed so that you MUST listen to it in order, it's badly designed IMHO.

wmp 10 basically because its there + does everything i want and i dont own an ipod. Itunes does pretty much the same + ms also seem 2 have custom auto play lists like itunes so i cant really see 2 much difference between the 2. Wmp 10 also has the same syncing thing as itunes both of these programs are pretty awesome and i just use either. They both manage my collection pretty well i even used winamp for a while but i didn't like it as much and the cd burning thing sucked pay for a juke box neverrrrrrr

Yeah, some tracks like fade and mix into eachother, that sounds cool :D. Unless you own the standalone single's rip, then it doesn't matter what order you listen to imo.

And that's where the remote comes in ;)

I agree with what you posted but I never liked 'best of' albums either, I have a few but they are mostly live so I still need the file-order. I have tried playing files by genre once (admitted, using WMP so it just had to suck) and vowed never to let the computer decide what I want to listen to again :)

I like albums that have a 'storyline' so for most of the music I play I stick to the original order. If I really hate a song and it's not needed I simply delete it, makes me feel really powerfull. Oh, and I hate players that crossfade tracks.

Tenacious D is the best example of having to listen to an album in order

but if u had to listen to the skits everytime u listened to the CD it would get a bit annoying

that was a pretty dumb comment.
Well you are a pretty dumb person. Hey, maybe you should use something called 'argument' to back up your claims. Mattmagoo pretty much summed it up with the skits thing. I do not want to listen to an album as if it were one giant 70 minute song.

Btw matt, I listened to the Tenacious D album 'as I downloaded it' (i.e. not in order at all) and it was quite enjoyable (except for the crappy skits).
