Problem With Card Reader...

Hi All!

just got my card reader and plugged into my PC,then windows 2k recognised the reader straightaway as mass storage device. because the manual of the reader said it's "hot swappable", so i insert my smc with the reader power on, and it worked, i could see all files on the smc. then took the smc out (also with the reader power on), put it back into my gp32_console , then it couldn't find any file as if there is no smc in it. i also put the smc into the reader again, and no file was found as well, but i still can see the space my files take up through the property.

anyone experienced this situation? is it just poor quality of the reader? or it's something relate to FAT12, so the reader "automatic" modified something?

thanks in advance!

Hi, what is exactly your problem, because i had the same t think : i have used a SMS reader because i was not at home, and when i if i just put files into the SMC, it worked fine, but i had the bad idea to format, and then the gp32 said :" no game or no SMC" inserted, if it is that, you have to format it whith GPmanager, and i think you should use GPdrive, its the best way.
Sorry, for my bad english  , i hope you will ubderstand me :p

You probably forgot to RTFM.

You see, you have to EJECT a mass storage device before you can take it out. If you put in an SMC, you will see the green light going on. When you start writing crap to it it will be quite fast because some stuff is buffered and not written directly. You have to eject the thing first. So right click on the drive, select EJECT. Make sure you don't have any files open on de device, otherwise it won't work. Sometimes you'll have to wait a bit before you can eject the card. When the eject has been succesful, the light on your cardreader will go out.

RTFM/Google next time plz, as this is rather basic stuff ;)

...And a "thank you" would be nice

[Mod - Oh come on, you should know what the 'Edit' feature is by now.]

maybe i didn't state quite well. and of course i DID RTFM!
and i did follow the standard procedure to eject a mass storage device.

i will clarify a bit here. after i insert my smc, the reader worked fine, i can browser all files/folders on my smc, then i did nothing but just to eject the mass store device (right click on the drive icon, select eject.....) then i pull off the smc after the reader's light off and put it back to my gp32_console but nothing was found, and neither does the reader.

sorry for my English, but anyway, thanks for replying!

If you can't help the guy, don't bother posting; at least try to be somewhat helpful <_<

JRyouK- is the SMC new or old? have you had files on it before? Do you, by chance, know anyone else with an SMC reader (perhaps you could try theirs)? Is your SMC formatted correctly for the gp (im nopt sure if FAT 12 is the correct smc format for gp's)?

Also, have you ever used this SMC in the gp b4? If not, I reccomend formatting it through pclink or gpmanager (found here) and then try the card reader

I'm sorry, I'm asking you more questions than you've asked us but a bit more info will help us sove your problem :)
Please post back with your results and im sure we can

I hav a cardreader, and I've never ejected the cards, and I've never lost data (that's in four years of using SMCs, on several different readers).

As long as the access light (if you have one) has stopped flashing, it's safe to remove the card.

all right, i am sorry for posting in a wrong forum.

yes, the smc is old, i owned my gp32_console for more than a year. i just want to see if there is anyone had similar situation before so i can tell if it's my reader's quality problem or software problem.

anyway i will try to figure out my problem. thanks you guys for replying

aww I wish my light went out I have to click on the drive to make sure its anoying it would be easier if the light went out good thing befor I noticed you had to eject my SMcs didnt get erased

All I can say is try running Scandisk and/or Chkdsk on the SMC, checking for bad sectors. That may recover some of the data, or at least make it usable. Otherwise - reformat, recoup your losses, and try again. Document your steps as closely as possible in case something goes wrong.
