The main page says it's 720p & has a 5ms response time, is there a part number for this screen? I'm wondering if it's an IPS or TN panel.
 
Good question; I don't recall that being announced. A TN panel wouldn't be too bad given it's a display bonded to a gamepad so usually in the same orientation towards you. And with a response time of 5ms I'd tend to assume it's a TN panel, although it's likely my understanding of response times is kind of out of date, not having been in the market for a new monitor for a good ten years or so now. A TN panel with limited overdrive might even be the ideal thing if IPS panels are still slow (and overdriven TN panels tend to create a silhouette behind moving sprites) on a system that runs all kind of emulators of old 2D systems IPS technology is also more power-hungry than TN panels so I guess that's another point in favour of TN. But I don't actually know what part the display is, or what technology it's based on.
 
This was brought up before but I'll be damned if I can remember when or where; we talk way too much on this forum.
Don't have a definitive answer, but being the newer technology it is almost certainly IPS. The original benefit of TN was superior refresh rate, but IPS panels of the last few years have been able to reach 5ms refresh so that's not really an issue anymore. The benefit of IPS over TN is screen angle, with TN panels getting washed out if you look at them from an angle and IPS being clear no matter what angle. If ED was able to secure an IPS panel with 5ms refresh then that's obviously the right choice.

Don't forget the color depth, TN panels are unable to display the full 24bit color range.
 
Thank you Linux-SWAT, that panel appears to be TN. I don't think that any IPS screen has a viewing angle of 80 degrees.
 
80/80/80/80 are referring to Left/Right/Up/Down - we're talking about 160°.

Thanks for the clarification, it looks like I was wrong here because between this information and the new pictures EvilDragon posted it's very apparent that the viewing angles are far too good to be a TN panel. Good news for everyone buying a Pyra.
 
FWIW, my TN-panel equipped laptop has quite similar behavour when I look at it sideways - it's only when I look at it from the top of the bottom that it goes too dark or too light. But like I said, on a handheld device, looking from the top or the bottom isn't an issue as you'll naturally spin it to be perpendicular to your gaze anyway. I guess this is cool if you want to put it on a table and play multiplayer games using two external joysticks though.

I've actually had thee HD monitors for my PCs over the years. My first was a TN, back then TN was the only HD panels that were fast enough for gaming. My second was a ISP and I could notice the difference in speed. My third was a newer ISP panel that was fast enough for games. I still liked my TN monitor the best though, the reason I got rid of it was when I showed people things on my screen they had to have their head next to mine to see what was going on because of the viewing angles.

Also, you could view TN as having a built in security feature, people can't see what is going on if they aren't right behind/next to you.
 
This has socked me.

I don't know why, but I was assuming Pyra have IPS LCD screen (like any modern phone has, even cheap), no a TN LCD. For me this is a big degrade from my expectancy (I assumed IPS incorrectly from years ago).

I don't know where I assumed IPS for Pyra, but I am shocked.

I meet downgrade from 1080p LCD (original planned Pyra) to 720p LCD (rotation chip can't handle 1080p, although finally that chip wouldn't be used, using instead video hard in SOC as I asked a lot of time ago), and although I would prefer 1080p display, 720p is still acceptable for 5 inches display (of course, I prefer QHD display, son you can set resolution has you want -1080p/720p etc- as pixels are invisible at QHD in 5 inches; It is like a vectorial display).

Even GDP machines (GPD XD, GPD Win, GPD Pocket) has superb IPS screens (I don't like that GPD for other reasons), and in Pyra we end with TN display... in 2017-2018 :(

I will wait to see final Pyra, how good it ends, how good/bad is its TN display, and then I will decide. It may be in 2nd or 3th batch it be "upgraded" to IPS, as screen is upgradable, like CPU/SOC board (it is a good point in Pyra, we get an old/outdated SOC, but it can be upgrades in a future, while most pocket machines can't upgrade it, most even has fixed battery).

Excuse me, if I am too demanding but I am shocked to see a TN panel, instead of better LCD tech in 2017-2018.

I will continue liking and following Pyra development, but I don't know it TN screen would be enough for me (so I will wait for an IPS upgrade).

Actually.. Now we can use TILER would it be feasable to use a more modern display but the same touch screen tech?

I don't think the displays were ordered yet :)
 
It isn't a TN panel, it's an ADS panel (which is a technology by BOE themselves).

I suppose it would be a good idea to state ADS LCD in specs/etc, so no one get confused with old TN technology. Today most people expect a decent LCD tech and "only TN" sounds too old/bad.

Of course, when units arrive, it would be easy to show Pyra screen next to GDP screen.

I've never heard of "ADS" but it seems to be pretty good. I'd assumed IPS. I can't figure out what the difference between them is yet though.

I was thinking, from years, it was IPS. So when someone said «I'm wondering if it's an IPS or TN panel», I looked for in spes and I didn't found IPS in any side. So I assumed TN, if no IPS was indicated.

This is as simple as indicate "ADS LCD" in specs.

I heard of AFFS LCD from Hydis and Advanced FFS (AFFS) "with a 180 degree viewing angle and authentic color" (words of Hydis). And really it seems very good in some notebooks. It may be ADS is like AFFS, and globally as good as IPS.
 
I personaly prefer (S)-PVA Pannels like my (sadly old) PC Monitor has one (perfect Colours, perfect black, great viewing angle, no backlight bleeding, no "IPS-glittering"...), very rare those days, sadly. Even IPS is not that great imho and TN is even worse (except the response time). Well, TN might be OK for small devices I'm sure. But for my PC, I prefer something better than TN. I need a new Monitor by the way and still searching...
 
According to that PDF, ADS (loosely) stands for Advanced Super Dimention Switching, which along with the diagram on page 2 suggests a solution similar to IPS to me.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'IPS glittering'. It sounds a little like overdriving which is an old TN matrix technology to improve black to white times. Unfortunately, if you're going grey to grey those monitors will often overshoot and create bright speckles.
