Hiya, I was just wondering, would it be actually possible to port Broken Sword 1/2 from the PC to the GP32 with the voices and sounds and everything?

I know it would be a problem, due to the lack of a mouse, but maybe someone can overcome that problem!

The lack of memory on a card could also be a problem, maybe someone can compress the voices, I don't know...
I would give a source code for someone to port it, but I don't know what a source code is.

Well, thank you for reading, I hope someone replys with some information!

Actually Rico slightly jumped the gun there. Only slightly mind you, 5 mins on Google would help in ALL cases ;).

Broken Sword 1 + 2 are not GPL/Open however there ARE open engines for both games incorporated into the ScummVM application with the kind assistance of Revolution Studios.

However before you get to excited they will NEVER work on the GP32.
Firstly the GP32's screen is half the resolution of the games (320*240 vs 640*480) and there is no where near enough spare CPU cycles to dynamically downsize the screen resolution like that (trust me I know exactly how few CPU cycles are free in ScummVM) ;).

Secondly, there is the minor issue of the games being on 2+ CD's WITH compression and the somewhat limited 128MB SMC’s we all know and love.

Expect to see Beneath a Steel Sky supported at some point in the future and maybe Fate of the Amazon Queen (speed issues) but the GP32 will never see the high resolution games supported by ScummVM as our little system just won’t cope.

DJ, just to make me look less stupid :D I had some idea that Broken Sword was supported, but there were lots of other issues like the fact it's fairly new and the res and the CD size and possibly even the processing power (without the hassle of compression) so I went into auto mode. I should have googled for more info and delivered the kind of quality you did. Apologies :D

Rico,

Would you believe me if I said I get asked this all the time and I have a number of standard replies ;).

When you off to uni btw mate? There are several more pubs in Bath you need to be dragged around :D.

Oh, but they managed to convert it to the Gameboy Advance (The first Broken Sword). So maybe if someone could like get a Gameboy Advance working, then I would not need to ask about getting the Broken Sword series converted, and for now, I will just stick to the PC version of Broken Sword, since it is sooo great!

Maybe the (...Zodiac)...thing would be able to run it?

It's most likely a remake, not a port. However, remember we have a GBA emulator in the works. In all likelyhood, it would take less time for GPAdvance to get Broken Sword running then to for someone to finish a remake :)

DJW: October, w00t! Struggling and juggling with jobs in the meantime...

That GBA version would have much smaller graphics, I guess (haven't compared resolutions) and no voices, plus MIDI music... so it would be a lot smaller. Broken Sword had movies as well right? Those would have probably been replaced with cutscenes or slideshows.

You're right! I have been playing Broken Sword on the GBA to DEATH, and they use slideshows instead of movies, and midis instead of mp3, but I don't mind! It is still great, in EVERY way. I will hope and wait with anticipation for GP32 emulation of the GBA. I hope soon that it can be converted, so I will wait!

she's right here, I also used to have it on the GBA (massive bs fan as you know :p ) they also used text for speech but it still keeps the feel of the original, nice game in general apart from a few bugs.

Broken sword works in the new release of ScummVM, of course official release, not the gp32 port.

Nice sarcasm there, I just get bored when posts are too long and feign interest.
