Gigadrive 0.023

sound is/was a massive plus for me.. makes the emu way more playable.. and I for 1 cant see much speed decrease especially with the 165 fxe...

im happy to play with whatever gets released... wether its improved sound or gfx or compatibility... pressuring these kind authors that are helping our scene is surely counter productive.

evildragon is 100% correct

you cant please everyone, but you are sure pleasing me !! :D

fdave,

I've been testing some driving games out and you seem to have ironed out the more major problems I had on previous versions of gigadrive, but for what it's worth, here's what I've found:

chasehq2: playable, yet large pieces of track keep flashing up as if you are cornering

lotus 2: graphics appear to be spot on, no glitches, but as soon as you get it into 2nd gear the car grinds to a halt and you have to accelerate again, very odd. apart from this everything looks pucker

outrun: no problems

outrun 2019: no problems

outrunners: track and whole screen flickers badly

turbo outrun: lower half of title screen is black, this is fine once you enter the game but then the background scenery seems to go wobbly - very playable apart from this

micro machines 2: nothing, just a black screen on load

outlander: playable but road flickers on/off to give flashes of scenery behind it

roadrash 1: very smooth but no sprites are displayed, including your bike!

roadrash 2: this one works great

roadrash 3: black screen on load

haven't found any with sound other than those already mentioned, hope this can help in some way - keep up the good work, I can play ghouls'n'ghosts to my hearts content now! thank you very much..

awwwwww sonic 1 is awesomely fun with sound but i've got 2 much revision 2day fantastic stuff ( wish my gp32 could do more than 140mhz lol  )

Oh, by the way, fDave, since you coded Cyclone68000, could you create an Amiga emulator...?
I need it this evening, thanks :D

That's the spirit fDave... just sort those bugreports out and ignore the "I want! I need! It's uncomplete!"-posts :)

Thanks again for your great work :)

I've deleted a couple of posts here because I was getting a bit tetchy and they were a bit inflamatory... sorry about that. Apologises to those who got flamed, it was nothing personal!

This version is a bit slower, but don't worry it'll get fixed.

aberserlutely fantastic.
I love it i think the sound is great when it works. just wonding if the speed it runs at now will be the same with the inproved sound or will better sound slow it down more.
Just one more thing does shadow of the beast 2 run for anyone i just get the bios moniter crash thingy.
Thanks a lot your the man fDave

hard to say - i hope eventually it will run 60fps with sound

here's how i work it out - here's how long a megadrive frame takes:
68000 - 4ms
graphics - 28ms
sound - 4ms

now add though up and divide 1000 by them. this gives you the frame rate:

1000/(4+28+4) = 28 frames per second

so basically it's just jumping up and down on each of the graphics, 68000 and sound till it fits into 16.6ms, which give 60fps

Fantastic emulator - Thanks!

Only glitch I've spotted so far has been on Barts Nightmare (A simpsons game)

There is some sort of scrolling problem on the street sections - bits of the background appear just black.

Looks like it is something to do with the cyclone core as Rylehs Christmas beta runs the game perfectly but his later release with the cyclone core has similar problems to gigadrive.

Anyway - must get back to playing the megadrive version of Snake rattle and roll on my GP32. Thanks for bringing this back to me, the nes version just wasn't the same! :)

Cheers

Tim

Just out of interest, for the games that do work fine (like Strider, Sonic, you know the simple ones) is everything okay with the emulator, or is it crashing randomly?

I got that on Monday, but I think my batteries were running out...

As far as an Amiga emulator, don't count on it. The GP32 or any other handheld is simply not strong enough to do it. The 68000 is only a small part of the Amiga chipset. You have the blitter, copper, 4 channel stereo sound, a multitasking OS, it is just too much.

I think a full speed no frameskip Atari ST w/full sound is certainly doable though. While not an Amiga, it is the next best thing.

dont be so pessimist
remember before SNES or GEN emu were out a lot were think that those would never go fullspeed (even with a high FS) and look at the scene now
gigadriv, fGEN32, Osnes...
maybe Amiga is possible but with restrictions...:)

see you

i tested some games too!! :D

Dragonball Z ... : has sound and a nice speed. really great!!
Samurai Shodown: has sound but some grafic bugs. thats sad...

you can read in the readme that there is a bin support.
but it isn't!! every game had to be converted into a smd file...
but that isn't so bad ;)

Great work ! Thanks a lot. :D

Here are others games working with sounds :

Alien Soldier
Hokuto no Ken - Last battle
Shadow Dancer
Trouble Shooter

No bugs found.

Bins work fine here. And have done for ages.

What size is your bin file in bytes?

Do you know I'm itching to find out about the extra hardware in the famed Amiga.... it's kind of like a continuation of the old Atari ST versus Amiga battles of yesterday.
"My Amiga is SOOO much harder to emulate than your crappy Atari ST"

...what can be in this beast which means even Cyclone cannot handle it?
I want to know why :)

4 channel stereo sound and a multitasking OS? Well the OS is software not hardware, so that isn't even releveant is it? And as for 4-channel stereo sound, well the MD has 10 channels, and even the speccy 128 has 4, so I don't see why that's a huge drawback. hell i'll bet the C64 is more complicated.

No the only thing I can see is this Copper or Blitter thing, and if they aren't as powerful as a flipping Pentium-4 then it's going to be a serious letdown for the Amiga-nah-sayers!
