Windows Xp - Self Help

A firewall stop them? In a OS they developed? How many back doors do you think they left?

As for why they havent been shutting the copies down, THEY HAVE BEEN. Try installing a pirated copy, crack the activation and use windows update (good luck!). Also they are waiting for the laws to be passed before they really start taking action. A tiger before it strikes.
Illegal copies of Windows will still update for most major virus patches (MS decided to put security over their revenue for once, but really of course this just proliferates the spread of their products) and only one category is grayed out. Nothing will happen to your computer, although I'm quite sure they have the right to lock down the OS from starting up or possibly worse things.

A firewall will not stop Trusted Computing. Without the required ports being open, you will be forced to run your computer in some stupid 'limited' mode, where you cannot run or access signed files or programs (which will cover a large proportion of files by the time TC really affects you).

Arghhhhhhhhh! Stop being so paranoid!
How can you call that paranoia? Its reality, its fact. There is no paranoia about it. Microsoft is trying to get this passed over the world, their software already includes the ability to enact this but for the most part they are holding back until the laws are passed.

When the company that makes your OS, tells everyone that they are trying to get a law passed that will allow them to do anything, destroy anything, have complete control over your PC software and hardware, under full protection of the law, and that this feature already exists in their OS they are just trying to get full permission to use it, fearing that is a valid rational fear, not paranoia.

But if you have already used windows update, or installed newer M$ software (even if you use 98se, if you install the newer M$ apps you are still vunerable), then you are pretty much SOL if M$ ever decides to do that to you. Of course they probably wont result to the hardware destruction or similar (that was just showing that there is no limit on what they can do under this law), but they already delete content, and deacivate your whole OS, and this is before the law is even fully passed! Imagine the steps they will take once it is?
What does SOL Mean ????

Woops Ive already updated parts In Windows Update Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Will my System still work good If I install Win98SE ?? My Specs are -

AMD Athlon XP 1600+ OVerclocked to 1900+
576MB SDRam
80GB 7200 RPM
40GB 7200 RPM
Geforce 4 Ti 4200 128MB DDR

Don't go back to that crap, if you want to believe all this madness get win2k.

A decent PC is wasted with Win98!

The only thing that is bugging me is the lack of a linux version of 3ds Max (although maya 6 looks good) and VMware is too expensive for me.. I have been considering a dual boot so I can get best of both worlds but I would prefer just using the one OS... as well as reformatting all my drives to FAT32 is going be an ass :(
Blender is cool if you can get used to the GUI.
I'm sorry but Blender isn't even remotely comparable to 3DS Max. The closest Linux alternative is Maya, but I am trained in Max and just don't have enough time to take out of my freelance duties to learn another application. Plus all of my maxscripts and plugins that I wrote would no longer function in Maya, making it impossible for me to export my data to the correct format.

What?! You must be joking. There isnt anything XP properly setup can do that 98se properly setup, cant do either.

I used 98se up till I purged my PC of windows a couple days ago, and I have a AMD Athlon 2600. If you are going to continue in windows, I highly suggest it, all XP has is the title of "new", there is nothing really innovative in XP. Just a lot of eye candy.

If you want an NT variant, 2k isnt bad but I never reall liked the NT variants.

hhmmm looks like it might be Win98SE Time.... I have a P3 450mhz on Win98 SE and teh Shutdown / Start up time is AMAZING Compaired to XP... Like I hit shutdown on the 98 Machine and its off within 2 - 3 seconds, I hit shutdown on XP and it takes 30 seconds upto 2 minutes... :D

What do you mean by Setting up Win98SE Properly???

Thanks

Always had problems with the Win98se network.
Sometimes it was finding the other computers, sometimes it didn't.
Sometimes reinstalling the drivers did work, sometimes not.
Apparently it didn't like my Samba / Linux network (although one Win98se machine did... but only occasionally).

And if in Win98 one task crashes, you can usually forget about the other tasks, too... they'll most likely crash.

Not in WinXP.

A lot of drivers for new hardware don't even work anymore on Win98...

So what OS Would you recommend (NOT Linux as I like to play lots of games :D)??

Thanks

I'd recommend...

for people who like to fiddle around with their PCs a bit or don't do much than standard office:
Linux (select your distribution :))

all other people should STILL stick to Windows (well, at the moment... if Linux gets more comfortable and compatible (which WILL happen in the next years :)), I'd recommend it to everyone!)

for slow PCs (up to 500 MHz):
Win98se (if you want Multimedia and games) or Win NT (if you want a stable system and don't care about Multimedia or USB).

for medium PCs (up to 1,5 GHz):
WinXP (home is enough for most of you. The only difference (except that "home" sounds lame compared to "professional") are the sharing options. If you don't want to share your files in a network with a lot of users, don't care about).
You can sometimes grab WinXP home for about 50 bucks at eBay (just need to be lucky!).

for fast PCs (faster than 1,5 GHz):
WinXP or Win2k.
Win2k isn't that colorful and nice than WinXP and also needs a faster machine, but it is more stable and without all the spying stuff.

Remember: This is just what I recommend with my own experiences... there is nearly no OS I haven't tried myself :)

You know the % of people that still have Win98se? Its amazing, its still atleast %50 of the windows home market. No hardware vendor is that stupid to create hardware and not write drivers for one of the most common versions of windows ever. (Hell many of these hardware manufacturers are even creating linux drivers now!) So to think that they would drop support for the most popular windows version ever, is just wrong.

You might have some obscure piece of hardware that for some reason didnt have 98se drivers made for it, but for just about everything, windows98se works perfectly. I have always had the latest and greatest hardware, and WIn98se has always supported it perfectly. You just have to actually find and download the drivers yourself, where as XP includes most of those drivers.

So do I, I am a serious hardcore gamer, yet 95% of the games I want to play, work in linux just fine, and that % is good enough for me.

Not to mention it has emulators for N64, PSX, MSX, GB/GBC/GBA, SNES, Nes, SMS, GG, Genesis, Mame, Frodo, etc..., practically every emulator you can think of.

I am very much a hardcore gamer, and linux suits me perfectly.

I actually, just yesterday, grabbed a random game from my collection (a huge collection) that I havent tried in linux yet, just to see if a random game would work, and lo and behold, it works pefectly, in wine and winex both. And game support just gets better and better everyday.

Plus I could swear that any PC with 98se installed would get slower and slower as time went on... Not a problem I've had with NT variants.
Hey oddly enough thats the exact same thing that happens to me with XP, except the "as time went on" is usually just about a month.
