Windows Xp

Only backup the things you can not replace ie. Stuff you can not get off the net. As this will save space on backup media (Dvd, Cdr, Floppy, Zip drive, Usb flash stick, Compact flash card Smar...) ;) . J/k

OMG, sorry im a stupid fuck. Must be from reading the secret interview in GPM. Thanks Trooper, ever the helpful friendly...mmm...person :D .

Helpful anti-virus and security tips:

In W2K and XP Pro, make a "Power User" account for your daily use. Don't use your Superuser (called "Administrator" in Windows) unless you really need to. If you have a program that MUST run in Adminstrator, right-clicking on the program should give a "Runas..." command in both. If not, I believe Windows 2000 has a "su" command like Linux to give you temporary admin priviledges. Not really sure about "su", I think it is like "runas" in XP, except it's Admin-only and you can pipe the password to "su" whereas you need to use a keyboard emulation script for "runas".

Aaaaanyway, that little extra protection will help to (but not totally prevent) stop Trojans and Worms at least :)

If you NEED to pirate Windows, try to get a "Student" or MCAA (I think that's the right acronym) edition, those don't need to be activated, even for XP. I have XP Pro on like 4 computers, no activation required, all completely legal. In fact, my university uses the SAME serial key for ALL computers. That's the beauty of the "Student Edition"! ^_^

Hmmm... I fancy going legit and switching to windows 2000.

I remember seeing the retail box dirt cheap recently, but I can't remember where!

Does anyone know of a cheap place to buy it?

be careful with ebay, they may just sell you a copy without the key! Make sure its sealed with key.

I picked my copy at a computer fair, cheap as chips and brand new & sealed.

Thanks.

But yeah, a lot of them seem to be Dell versions without a serial. Full boxed versions seem to be costing £50-£60. I'm sure I saw it cheaper somewhere???

Maybe I was dreaming!

arg i need emule back ^^ but protowall is giving me alot of trouble i might go and buy a student copy of 2000 if i can, already have a copy of xp pro student 1 i was wondering why i couldn't understand what any of you meant when you said activation : /

I cant find the moterboard driver for my desktop. It is a compaq Presario 5000. Can anyone help?

Its a 5wv255 model, 5000 is the series.

I opened it up and had a hook around. I came up with this number: KUA1300525 UWAVE. I believe it to be the moterboard number but cant find the drivers for it.

I also came up with 2 other numbers if they are any help: 0108, and 786K1.

Can anyone help?

It turns out I cant find the drivers cause compaq are fucking assholes. They dont want their computers to be upgraded, so you can barely even put in a new HDD without buying something to scramble it so it works with the compaq BIOS. What a POS. Does anyone know of a way around this?

Oh, it's a compaq, I used to have one of them <_< . They used to make good laptops but there Desktops suck.

I found this information...

Board: Compaq 06E4h
Bus Clock: 100 megahertz
BIOS: Compaq 786K1 10/12/2000

...The best way around this is to get a new motherboard, it's one of the cheapest things you can upgrade if your not fussed about fancy features. If you just want one thats only a little better than the current compaq one, it'll cost you VERY little.

...But if your just wanting to install windows then have you still got the recovery disk that came with your PC? I had one with mine.

That will contain the board drivers on it somewhere. But whether you can get to them easily is another matter.

Yeah, ebuyer's pretty good. Just browse around their motherboard section for a while. Read some of the customer reviews, then decide how much you want to spend.

Then, it's always worth checking on kelkoo or ebay if you you can get the same board cheaper.

[edit]God, my spelling is getting worse and worse!
