Windows Xp - Self Help

You want to see self-help in its most minimal form? Try installing one version XP on two different machines, activate them both and log on line with both of them. You will see self-help in its simplest of forms. Microsoft is holding back the full power of self-help till its laws are passed in more areas.

Nvidias driver should work and support both displays, it may take a bit to setup. Mine does. There is tv recording software, and HP is a huge supporter of linux so your mouse should work fine. I ran accross an article the otherday about "linux's answer to iTunes" so that may be a place to start for iTunes like software.

As for your art software, Painter works in WINE last I checked, 3dsm has issues because of the hardware they install, you situation is a bit unquie, if you _NEED_ those painting apps, you may not find the answer on linux that easily, you would have to make comprimises, and maybe just maybe run them in VMWare (which is a 100% compatible x86 emulator, just doesnt have hardware video accleration) or Win4Lin which is much faster than VMWare.
I installed two copies of Windows XP Prof. at the same time with the same key and activated them with about 5 minutes difference and both are still running fine...

I found nvidia drivers - but they don't support two outputs an laptop... (the laptop output behaves different than the ones on the common graphic cards...)
And a TV recorder won't work - I need a framebuffer TV output for combustion, for example. It has to be 100% accurate, not out of the TV output from the laptop...

For the HP Spacemouse... yes... I DID find a driver... but I need this for 3dsmax... and it doesn't work using WINE...

And Painter... yes, it works. But I still need the LCD monitor tablet driver... didn't find one...

Sadly, as I want to use linux where possible :(

When people who care - not your usual PC owner who just uses it for mail and stuff - start realising what they can and can't do on their own computer due to 'Trusted Computing', they will get pissed. Microsoft have very slowly inched this into motion by now and eventually you will find that you are forced to upgrade Word to view a document, or pay for a WMA after listening to it for 3 times. It is inevitable that methods will be introduced to avoid it. Let's be real here: Microsoft can't block trading of files around a network. It would spawn out from there, programs would be hacked, people would buy any non Trusted Computing-based hardware available (and someone is going to fill that niche) and the idea will fail, the hard way, with a lot of money and time being wasted on both 'sides'.

I predict the same for this Self-Help clause.

EDIT: One example of this evilness is definitely already on your Windows XP computer, provided you use Windows Update or got a recent copy of the OS: Windows Media Player has the ability to delete any content it defines as 'illegal' from your hard drive at any time. I'm not joking; check the EULA you automatically signed. RIAA, MPAA and other organisations will welcome (ab)use of this 'feature', I'm sure.
This I believe can happen, licenses for certain media is probably just the start but I'm not too worried about them disabling my hard-drive controller!

Besides surely a firewall can still stop them?

7 out of 10 (recent?) games working isn't good enough for me.

If they can do this why haven't they started shutting down illegal copies then? XP has been around for quite a while now. I don't think it's worth their time and $.

A firewall stop them? In a OS they developed? How many back doors do you think they left?

As for why they havent been shutting the copies down, THEY HAVE BEEN. Try installing a pirated copy, crack the activation and use windows update (good luck!). Also they are waiting for the laws to be passed before they really start taking action. A tiger before it strikes.

7 out of 10 is more than enough for me, hell I usually only play 1 or 2 out of 10 of the new games coming out. I doubt anyone here downloads / buys, every single game that comes out. Most gamers pick and choose, do you care if the new Blues Clues game doesnt work? :p

I ain't taking a stand for M$ but I just fail to see the purpose of scaremongering like this because no one wins either way.

Since when has M$ shown they cared? They already have the biggest chunk of OS market share by a long shot, killing off the users who are not paying for it, (forcing most of them to actually buy it) wont hurt M$ one bit. And even if it did, M$ loves to get their way, regardless of the $ it costs them, just look at the XBox, they still push it, and will continue to push it, even though they lose money on every unit sold. Because microsoft sees a larger picture, they see 5 years from now, not tomarrow. They see that what they do today, even at a loss, will give them a foothold in the future.

The only thing that is bugging me is the lack of a linux version of 3ds Max (although maya 6 looks good) and VMware is too expensive for me.. I have been considering a dual boot so I can get best of both worlds but I would prefer just using the one OS... as well as reformatting all my drives to FAT32 is going be an ass :(

No privacy? Destructive intrusion? ID, carding, and asking for papers?

Welcome to old russia!

lol!!!

Y'know this thread has convinced me to try a duel boot again, I loved the gimp and if maya is available and WINE is as good as y'reckon (anyone know if it runs Flash MX suite?) then hell, I'll go for it (again!).

Out of all the flavours which has the highest Hardware compatibility?

[edit] heh, just bought Max Payne 2 and neverwinternights + expansions, good to know they all run under linux (presumably under wine, yes?)

Neverwinter Nights has an offiicial linux version (you download the files from the official site if you own the normal version) and it runs on linux perfectly. It uses winelib for compatibility.

Max Payne 2 works in WineX and I am pretty sure it works in Wine also with the proper setup. Check the compatiblity list on winehq.com and transgaming.com

Hardware compatiblity is more of a Kernel thing rather than a distro thing. (2.4 and 2.6 are the two common kernels right now, I use 2.6)

Wine is free, WineX is free as well (sorta), to download WineX you need to be a "member", and to be a member you need to pay a membership fee. Although WineX is open source, and there are many tutorials on how to compile the source you download from their site. And there are many people who distribute the RPM of winex. But Point2Play (and additional software with winex) is not free. It requires that membership. Point2Play basically automatically installs the game for you, creates any nessesary settings that you need for this particular game to run, if any, creates real linux desktop icons, etc...(a nice point n click install system for winex).

Wine runs many games (if you setup directx and whatnot in it properly), so WineX isnt always needed, I have both, because each plays games the other dont.

As for "is winex worth the price" well thats up to you. I forget the price, but I think its $30 for 6 months (which lets you download point2play, and the newest RPM's and binaries for the next 6 months) Check the game compatiblity and see if its worth it to you. (you might want to find an RPM floating arround the internet and try it out before you make that choice)

Why FAT32? FAT32 is a really bad filesystem, especially if you are using linux :) You need ext2 and ext3 file formats for linux. And the installers will do that all for you.
The problem with ext2 and ext3 is that it is nearly impossible to restore deleted files...
I accidentally deleted 35Gig of MP3s from my server (ext3).
I DID realize this the same second I deleted it - but nevertheless it was impossible to get my data back...

mmy problem is that I have a ton of stuff on my drive and reformating to any system is going to be a hassle.. plus I would want a dual boot so a windows and linux complatibe filesystem is needed which I think is FAT32.. correct if I am wrong :)

You can install a thingy that will let you read (not write) NTFS in Linux somewhere. I installed it in RedHat before. But I've uninstalled RedHat, cuz of all the dependancy (sp?) stuff, and now I'm attempting to install Gentoo, so I can use emerge :)

People are saying this Probably wont happen... I dont think it will... Millions of people will be using copied XP Installation... Does this mean Microsoft will destroy Millions of computers, I dont think so.... If Microsoft wants to stop the piracy they should reduce the price of WinXP Pro to £10 - £20 ;) This will most likely increase there profits as all the people with Illegal copies will go out and buy the original... :D

Also, Is it right that if you DONT Update Windows XP at all and disable Auto Update then you will be safe???

I have the Original Windows 98SE Sitting here... Did someone say that its Twice as fast as XP ??? Only thing thats Holding me back from Going back to Win 98 SE is that GPDrive wont work on 98 (Unless theres drivers anywhere...)

I just thought, do you know the file that contains all the Drivers in the Windows directory of XP... Could you copy that to CDR and Re Format to 98 and then Drag the Drivers file onto 98 ??? hhhmmmm

It's not THAT awkward. :) Sure you end up spending a day or two getting all the fundamental dependencies but after you've done that it works like a dream.

So M$ is spending all the money, time, effort and extremely bad publicity, on a system THEY CREATED, for no reason other than they have too much money and wanted to get rid of some of it? Get real. This is something that is all to real, and ALREADY part of windows xp. And you have already agreed to the liceneces that allow them to do this.

If you install XP, throw in a good firewall, a good virus checker, a couple other security apps, never use windows update, never install or update a new M$ product (especially one with an XP name) Then theoretically you should be safe unless they have some nice hidden backdoors in their software we dont know about. (I wouldnt be supprised)

But if you have already used windows update, or installed newer M$ software (even if you use 98se, if you install the newer M$ apps you are still vunerable), then you are pretty much SOL if M$ ever decides to do that to you. Of course they probably wont result to the hardware destruction or similar (that was just showing that there is no limit on what they can do under this law), but they already delete content, and deacivate your whole OS, and this is before the law is even fully passed! Imagine the steps they will take once it is?

What if the next windows update includes some stealth download that detects if you are using a cracked version and gives you a nice hidden virus (who better to write a virus for your PC they those who made the OS) What if they previous updates already included this but havent been activated yet?

Even if M$ never uses this (which they will), just knowing they have that kind of power over your PC, over your files, to do whatever they want, whenever they want, and be fully backed up by the law, is enough for me to never use their products again.

Blender is cool if you can get used to the GUI.
