whilst stumbling arounf the Zodiac forums this came to my attention

http://www.bobbeetec.com/drg.htm

Now the coder seems very open to porting to other handhelds as long as the demand is there.

Now if the guy can get Quake running on GBA imagine what he can do with GP32

So hows about a petition or something to persuade him to get quake 2!!!!!!!

Let's not jump the gun yet, and see Quake running on GP32 first. Only after that we can think of having Quake 2 on our GP32's. However, without the memory upgrade, I doubt Q2 would run as it requires alot of memory.

Quake could do with 8MB.

I played Quake daily for a few years, yet I would not want quake for the GP32. The x/y aiming and moving would not come out well on a device such as the GP32, mainly due to the control.

if its up and running full speed on the crappy gba I really cant see it being to much of a prob on GP

some of my friends could win in Q1 multiplayer anytime with a keyboard only (vs players using mice).

Well, of course I'd go for. Even if impractical, it'd be another monument to the Gamepark's unfulfilled (though admittedly less so these days) potential.

Stop whining around, people. This would rock. Doom2 does. And this would be even bigger, if it is ported correctly. :D
I would be very very happy about a port like this.

psst -

boots, menu & then runs slower than slow

The porter did it moreso to see if it would work, which it does -
slowwwwwwly.

Do not expect this to run at good speed, in fact the framerate is extremely bad.. We're talking 1 to 3 fps here. It is kind of a cool feeling to see Quake running on the GP32 but it is not fun to play.

The biggest thing giving the low framerate is most likely that the original Quake makes heaavy use of floats. The GP32 lacks a FPU coprocessor which result in really slow math calculations when using floating points.

This port could be a good starting point for someone to improve on and make a proper GP32 version though.. the sourcecode is here and should compile with gcc.

Even though I think that with some heavy optimizations it would be possible to get some kind of semi-decent framerate out of this I have no intentions in taking on such a big task since I really don't have any time for it.

Some crucial improvements for the brave to implement would be:

- Rewrite the engine to use fixed point math all the way instead of floating points.

- Write some good assembly routines for the rendering and math routines.

- Adding sound and proper keymappings.

Google is my co-pilot

I vote stronlgy against. What is the point?
FPS suck on consoles especially handhelds.
Strongly against? I cant imagine it being the sort of thing I could feel STRONGLY against....

It'd be cool in my opinion :)

In my opion it would be great :D I'm replaying Quake at the Xbox now (i completed the PC version a few months ago) and i have to say the controls work really good for the xbox!

:D QUAKE RULEZ
i love quake, and if it can run on gp32 (and i know that possible), it's a great idea to convert him on this support

What were they playing against? Chimps?

As a dedicated Quakeworld and now Quake III player I really cannot believe that any Keyboard player would have a hope against any competent mouse player.

I've been waiting for someone to do a decent port of Quake now for awhile. If someone were to port Quake to gp32, I would put both of my HL2 mods on hold to do some mods for the Quake engine so I could play them on my gp32.
