Flu Brightness

There was a post recently (yesterday I think) regarding a mod someone made to adjust the brightness of his FLU.

I remember seeing other comments over recent months suggesting FLU was too bright, I've had my GP32 for about 6 months and I wouldn't consider my screen to be bright even when I use it in dim situations.

Does anyone know if these units vary, or is it just that peoples idea of brightness is very different, or even related to what application is running. I say this because it seems that games written for the GP seem better than the emulators.

I wouldn't know if the brightness of the FLU varies between units as I don't know anyone else with one to compare with -- I would assume that due to manufacturing variance that there is some variation between units.

The difference in the brightness of the image between emulators and games is due to GAMMA not the actual FLU (which is simply a light that is wired directly to the batteries and the gp32_console itself can't adjust it).

Gamma is defined as:

"Gamma is a measure of contrast in an image, typically in the midrange greys (mid-tones). Many image editing programs express gamma as a curve which can be manipulated by moving points to change the contrast of the image. Adjusting the gamma allows you to correct mid-tones without noticeable changes in the highlight and shadow areas. Gamma is also the way the brightness of an image is interpreted by computer hardware. Many monitors and graphics cards let you adjust the gamma level to alter the monitor appearance or to compensate for brightness or colour in a room. This is one reason why the same image may look very different on two different monitors"

In other words the emulated machines have different gamma settings to the Gampark's native gamma, hence colours may not appear the same on the gamepark as they would on the actual machine that is being emulated. Most emulators have gamma adjustment, have a look at Castaway for example and change the gamma to see what it does.

Hope that explains something rather than confuse you

Thanks for the reply, I don't use Castaway but I'll give it a try later with some other emu's.
