GP2X Vlc On Gp2x?

Hello everybody,

I think that GP2X still lacks a good all-purpose movie player. I usually work under Linux and I think that VLC is one of the best softwares around in its league. It's codec-less, it has usually no problems with corrupt/partial files, it's GPLed and its sources are available. Could it be possible to compile it under our little GP2X???

Well, all that is true, but as far as I know, VLC requires X11...

Hmmm.
I'm no programmer, but VLC is available for a wide range of operating systems (see here for the full list: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ ), some of which don't have anything similar to X11 (or so I think... does the Zaurus have X11??); moreover, I think MPlayer should need it too, and it's been successfully ported.

Even if a part of VLC is derived from MPlayer, the fact of being codec-less is a key feature for a hand-held console like GP2X... VLC can read MPEG1/2, DIVX (1/2/3), MPEG-4, DivX 5, XviD, 3ivX D4, Sorenson 1/3 (Quicktime), H.264, Theora, WMV1/2 and more! MPlayer is almost useless without codecs, and I'm pretty frustrated having to convert each and every video file I want to see on my GP2X...
As for the video interface, among the various output formats there're both Framebuffer and SDL, so this shouldn't be a problem.
I have never ported anything to GP2X and I doubt I would be able to, but I think this would be a valuable addition to its software database; does someone want to try??

It's been done, but we can't support more video codecs because we need access to the PROPRIETARY AND CLOSED hardware specs and instructions to do so.

Basically, until GPH/Whoever releases full source on how to use the GP2X hardware for video coding, or we hack it to get the same result, there is no way we can add more video codec support to MPlayer.

There have been attempts, but we run into the fact that there is lack of power: http://archive.gp2x.de/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi?0,0,0,0,6,1267

This topic has been discussed over and over again, WITH THE SAME PROGRAM. Please search, PLEASE.

Afaik mp2x added support for more codecs (or was that only audio?), and the fact that it's based on gmplayer means that it still uses the hardware decoder.. right? So why can't we add more codecs that way?

I see.

Looks like the forum search engine is a bit strange, as it didn't find anything about VLC or Videolan when I looked into it. So I thought the topic hadn't been discussed yet.

I apologize for troubling you.

Please don't let this scare you off the forums. I personally think that Shikaku was unnecessarily harsh - even though this topic has been discussed a lot. We're not all new topic slayers. :)

Allan.

http://www.gp32x.de/board/index.php?showtopic=24451&hl= <--- I posted this when I was a noob. This is why I know for a fact this was suggested at least once, and I got the same exact answer.
