I wanted to wath a few videos on my Wiz and when i had them downloaded and went to play them, the video looked fine but instead of the normal sound i could only hear static. Any ideas on how to fix this?

It probably needs to have the audio re-encoded for a supported codec? Check what audio codec the files uses and make sure it's supported on the wiz.

on windows you could press alt-enter on the file to see its properties. if the system knows the codec used within the AVI it will tell you about. otherwise you could just use some third party program - a quick search gave me http://avicodec.duby.info/ - never tried, just googled.

So how do i open it to view the audio codecs? Do i need a special program?
If you're using a Windows PC, you can use GSpot:
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

Just drag the AVI onto GSPot and you can see which codecs have been used for audio and video; it will also tell you if the codecs are installed on the local machine.
