I posted this in my thread about APRS, but it should probably have its own topic, in case anyone else runs into this.
I'm trying to get my USB GPS working, and in particular, working with something like ModRana.
I have the GPS hooked to a hub which also takes in a feed from my APRS TNC. These are both using Prolific USB to Serial cables.
When I plug in the USB to the back of the Pandora and un dmesg from a terminal, it shows the serial adaptor just fine. Here's the relevant output:
I then did:
gpsd -Nn -D3 /dev/ttyUSB0
I immediately started getting a stream of data, including the correct lat/long for my position.
I launched ModRana at that point, but it just showed someplace in Germany, then hung for a long period of time. I unplugged it and went inside to where I could connect back to my home wireless network. I was hoping that it would try and download more tiles around my current location, but it didn't seem to. I went through the menus and told it to download a few miles worth of tiles, and it reported success.
Next I went back out to my vehicle and plugged it in again. This time when I did gpsd -Nn -D3 /dev/ttyUSB0 it said it was already running. Ok, so I tried both sudo /etc/init.d/gpsd stop as well as just gpsd stop. It indicated success, but trying to do gpsd -Nn -D3 /dev/ttyUSB0 again still says it's running, and still hangs ModRana when it launches.
I'm pretty new to this, and trying to figure out what steps to take now.
1) how do I tell if the GPS is actually running? I assume the original command to run it in the foreground is why I was actively seeing the data, but what now?
2) how do I stop it?
3) how do I set it up to start automatically when plugged into the GPS or when I launch modRana?
4) does modRana normally hang like that? I could try TangoGPS, but was hoping to use the voice features in modRana.
Sorry about double-posting (I can delete the one at the end of my APRS thread), but since this is a topic split from the original it seemed to warrant it's own post in the proper forum.
Thanks,
