I did a quick search and to my amazment there are generic tile map editors out there. I thought I would take a look before I wrote my own. I think this is route im going to take, it will save me a load of time that i can put into the game itself.

I need to make a map for pirates, as you can imagine the map will be large. I have though entended to break it up into sections.

So im asking if anyone has used one and lives by it. Any ideas.suggestions are welcomed.

Update:
I found this one Simple Map Editor. Saves in a nice simple binary format like i was intending to.

I liked to use MS Paint as a map editor :)

Why not to make an ingame level editor? ;) That will be a feature

Id use paint maybe for editing the tiles, but its what exactly the tool of choice to make a map from the tiles.
maybe if the map didnt need to be so large, plus using an existing editor will accelerate my progress. I kind of need to get the game becoming a game.

Feel free to use mine. It's a basic vb6 editor. Not sure how much use it will be. :)

I built it to help me design my gp2x racing game levels.

As Orkie said, Mappy's pretty good.

There's also:

TileStudio: I'm a bit of a fan of this one, as it has a built-in tile editor as well.

Universal Map Editor: Another, simpler one to have a look at.

There are others too, of course (including the one you found yourself), but it's all about finding a nice "fit" with what you're trying to do. Oftentimes, to get that fit you'll end up bashing one together yourself specifically for the project you're working on.

But until you get to that stage, something from the list above should get you through. :)

Kind'a funny, but I was using Windows Notepad at first. It ended up being like the Matrix movie... I could see the game level data spinning around my mind. At that point I knew I needed to bash together my own :D .

All interesting stuff. Have fun with your project.

Thanks for all the links guys. I was too using notepad just to create something to start with, but now I need to start thinking on a larger scale and settle on a final file format.

ArrayPainter's very good, I'm using it right now in fact :)

Yeah, a +1 for Array Painter (http://www.arraypainter.com/)... it does output to C-style arrays which I found most helpful.

That looks pretty good. But I haven't really programmed any games with this technique before, using arrays to build levels easily. Anyone know of an article or something that could help me learn how to do it in code?

This tutorial series is pretty good. The code's not great, but it covers the basics for tile based levels/scrolling really well:
