The King of Arcades on Kickstarter

Indeed, very interesting. :) I wish I would have had the opportunity to grown up in Arcade culture. Sadly, there were some obstacles. First, I was grown up in the former GDR, we only had the "Polyplay" which may be one of the rarest Arcade Machines now on this planet by the way. ^^

Second, even in (West) Germany, ridiculus Laws killed the entire Arcade Culture there and are still present. There are no Arcade Halls in Germany which makes me very sad. And there is no chance that there are ever such Things here, so be happy if you were able to grown up in a Country that allowed this. I would open an big Arcade Hall if I would have the money and if I could, including an entire Retro Area inside and a secret door behind the Tron Arcade Cabinet of course! :D

I remember being in a small German Arcade once. They had about 20 machines but I was 8 year old, so I don't remember where it was xD

There are also some places (mostly bars) still having one or two Arcade machines.

Pandora provides a nice base to build an Arcade machine. Its a good use for boards with broken wlan, bluetooth and such.

What were the laws against arcade stuff ?

Yeah, the Germans have an interesting culture, on the one-hand they're all liberal and open-minded on a par with the Scandinavians, on the other they're deeply conservative with traditional church values and strict roles for men and women. Very interesting.

"Child/Youth protection" was the excuse for this, or something like that. This was the end of traditional Arcade Halls somewhere around 1985 or so.

@gunrock I can't remember that we have "strict roles for men and women" becaue the feminism is pretty strong here and the fight for Social equality between men and woman was fought pretty hard in the seventies. ;) Plus, in the area of the former GDR it was and is pretty common that woman are go working in a regular Job and do not keep the household. That's why we have so many Kindergartens here. Of course, deep in dark Bavarian Woods, there are some very conservative minds of the CSU Party that would like to see more woman go back to the Kitchen and stay there. :D But Bavaria is not the entire germany, even if many people believe this. ;)

Interesting fact by the way, while classic Video Arcade Machines and Arcade Halls are nearly dead here, there are a gazillion Gambling Halls for adults with Slot Machines and stuff. I was always sure, this is more dangerous than Videogames and I really wondered why this survived and Arcade halls not.

Then I found out, that the lobby of the Gambling Industry is pretty strong in Germany and it seems they worked hard to legalize these many Gambling halls all over the Country. Makes me sad that there seems to be non Arcade games lobby.

There are also indications that many of the Gambling Halls only exist for Money laundering which makes me really angry. It was in the medias recently, there seems to be a very big swamp in this direction.
