The Importance Of Snes On Gp2x

Wowser's Trousers!

If even half of those are running perfect on the GP2x, I'll be so damn happy. I love RPGs, and i've never had the chance to play the SNES ones... (apart from GBA ports).

My idea of "killer apps yo" or whatever, would be

Fully working SNES emu
Arcade and CPS2 (aliens vs Predator anyone? <3 <3 <3)
Amiga emu (So many good games on the Amiga, which i have lying beside me with two big boxes of games... just never got the space to set it up)
Neo Geo CD (At least Metal Slug... at least!!!)

Anything else is just a beautiful beautiful dream.

PSX is pretty unlikely, but it could start to happen right at the end...
Pocket PCs running at 420 MHz with no graphics acceleration can run certain PSX games decently. I don't see why the GP2X can't do the same, especially since it doesn't have an OS overhead and 2D acceleration.

What would really brighten my day would be if the GP2X could promise me great emulation of the likes of CPS1, CPS2, NeoGeo MVS (Screw CD and its loadtimes!); anything beyond that would just be the icing on the cake.

I mean, it would be truly bad-ass to be able to play the likes of Samurai Spirts, King of Fighters, the Dungeon & Dragons fighters, and Marvel vs. Capcom 1 on the road?

This would indeed be hot to see, and I hope that perhaps the 2X can grant me that.

CPS2 I wouldn't count on, needs too much power and wasn't the resolution real high too?

NeoCd? BAH we just need NEO MVS the ROMs are much smaller and don't need to store all of those big card space sucking MP3 files. Plus I doubt that the GP2X has enough power to run the emulation plus MP3 decoding too.

SNES is still the best thing that could be ported, even better than some crappy PSX1 emu that would run at 2 FPS with no sound.

CPS2 is just as possible as NeoGeo. The harware is very similar. The resolution is 384x224, so would have to be scaled down horizontally.

Oh, I must be thinking of X68000.

Power? Maybe, maybe not....but I still bet that with the proper optimization, anything could be possible.

Resolution? I think not. It's CPS-2 (which runs stuff at like 320X240), not CPS-3, and certainly not Naomi (which push for 640X420).

So, until I get more concise proof, I'm going to keep holding out in faith, hoping that D&D and Marvel vs.-related goodness could be made portable one day.

CPS2 is 384x224. So it would either have to cut of on the sides, or simply scaled down to fit.

And I will go out on a limb here, and say - GPX2 can definitely emulate CPS2. How well remains to be seen, but CPS2 isn't much more than a beefed up Genesis. Slightly faster CPU, bigger color palette, and better sprite/tilemap engine. Using DrMD on GP32 as a reference point, both NeoGeo and CPS2 should be possible on GPX2. In the past, what stopped both systems from being emulated was primarily lack of RAM. The GPX2 fixes that.

Read this thread for more details.

And of course, it might be wise not to dismiss out of hand the possibility of an X86 emu of some description at this stage (i.e. Bochs or Dosbox). It would be entirely stupid, of course, to assume it'd be much better than an 8MHz 386 that we'd get, but an 8MHz 386 still had some stunning gams for it...

That said, there's been a lot of interest in X86 emulation over the years on the GP32, and to my knowledge no-one ever actually attempted it, despite discussing whether it would be feasible quite a lot, so perhaps the same will end up bein tru of the 2X... but it'd be wise not to dismiss it out of hand at least.

My friend makes up 'legacy machines' to play the old games on, and loves the old PCs. I'm sure he'd be interested if this thing could emu x86.

the point of the neogeo and cps2 (and cps1 for that matter) was the rom storage, the hardware was good enough for the 2d games, it was up to the cart for all the storage, which is why the systems lasted so long, cps1 lasted about 8 years, neogeo lasted 15 odd years and still gets the odd commercial title even now, cps2 is not even canned yet with capcom digging it up again for another crack at street fighter anniversary hyper fighting(or whatever it is). it's all in the storage, as roms become more cheaper to get in bigger sizes (i meen, a brand new 2 meg eeprom is only a few quid now, when they were pushing games using them out they were about 4 time that) anyway, enough ranting

I remember Reesy saying that most of the CPU in DrMD was eaten up doing the rendering. If the second core on the GP2x was used for rendering then for sure NeoGeo would be *very* good on the GP2X, maybe even as good as on PSP. Then you have the screen res fitting Neo near perfect on GP2X eliminating the need for that annoying stretching like on 16:9 screens giving an even better look.

Maybe better because we have 68000 and z80 assembler cores.

I really wish that somebody attempts to port Bochs or DOSBox... Even if we only get the EGA 16-colour games running, that opens up Commander Keen, Monster Bash, Cosmo, and many others. In the event that the VGA games become possible (which currently seems quite unlikely, given what people are saying), we may get Jazz Jackrabbit.

Excuse me but can I get a "HELL YEAH" on this? I've got a dozen NeoGeo Roms already and I really dont want to go scrounging for Disk Images or ISOs of games I already have. What was the reasoning for this on the PSP?

The PSP only has 32 MB of RAM which is not enough to have the ROMs loaded. The GP2X has 64 which is enough for many ROMs.

I would love commander keen! Actually, i'm suprised the source code isn't available (it isn't, is it?). It seems like Id releases its source codes after it knows the games are no longer making them money. Is it because there's no interpreter (is that the technical term?) and core data files (like .pak or .wad) so they would have to release the complete game?
