Steam For Linux

i nearly just made a topic for this in the pandora forums! glad i checked down here

sounds delicious if it happens. obviously getting a version for ARM is still challenging without the source but one can live in hope right?

Well a Pandora port is certainly a pipe dream... but I'd like to think a more generic "Steam Mobile" might happen in the future. B)
I was actually thinking about that yesterday. They could at least port CS 1.6 and the other half-life engine games, maybe even games like Peggle could eventually be ported.

Well there has been some form of Linux steam client for a long time now.. that can be used to download and run their dedicated server stuff, not much more.

If Steam comes to Linux, would they be allowed to distribute existing Linux ports of some of the games, such as Shadowgrounds?

By the way, it looks like Linux Game Publishing is hiring:

Just in case anyone is interested.

Hasn't that been available since day one?

Curse their poor choice in engine names!
I'm going to start calling it the Valve Game Engine.

Since VGE is using OpenGL now for its OS X port, a lot of people are thinking "VGE for Linux is right around the corner", so we'll see.

I've signed up for the Mac Beta, hoping to get accepted...
A Linux version would be pretty sweet too.

Good news for Linux since it doesn't get a great deal of "modern" games, but unless they get ported to ARM (highly unlikely) doesn't excite me personally as I'm a Windows user.

Then again, it's not like Source would work on a Pandora anyway. That's pushing it a bit probably. Okay, maybe they got Half-Life 2 on the Xbox at 733MHz or so (Pandora can OC to 800) and maybe the Pandora has more RAM but the Xbox to my knowledge has more graphical capabilities.

I guess the best we could hope for as far as Valve goes is the original Counter-Strike (or Half-Life for that matter) but that will never happen... :(

:D :D :D
"Official" by Phoronix standards.

Go ahead and find the link where Valve announced it.
I'll wait.
And wait.

Phoronix must have hidden it really well, because I couldn't find it when I read that article yesterday.

So er, I have a question. Slightly silly, but I can't be bothered to research now. What games run on Source/VGE? Bioshock and Counter Strike pop to my mind, but surely there are others that are good too?

EDIT: If there's a bunch of good games (please), then all I need is for Nvidia to finally support linux with Nvidia 3D vision, I really really really can't be bothered to maintain and reboot in to a windows system just to play a few games.

Bioshock isn't Source Engine, it's Unreal.
Here's a list of games that use Source engine
Just because the source engine is ported to Linux does not automatically mean these games will become available, keep in mind. It means most of the hard work in porting should be taken care of, but the developer of each game would still need to at least do a recompile, and may require some other changes if they (the developers) used Windows specific code outside of the engine. But generally, I would suspect that once the Source engine becomes Linux compatible, these games should follow with Linux binaries shortly thereafter. Valve's flagship products at the very least: Counter Strike, HalfLife2, and Portal.
