Stargate discussion (split from Pyra size comparison thread)

SGU was the best SG ever... Why did they cancel it? :( And why with a fucking cliffhanger? >.<
I didn't liked SG:U that much, it was way to serious for my taste. I like SG:1 and SG:A for it's humorous ground tone and characters and SG:A was already awesome because of Rodney alone.  :D  The only funny SG:U episode was the one where Rodney McKay appeared, obviously.  Yes, SciFi has to include some fun too! *looking sharply to Battlestar Galactica*.

However, I also wished that SGU would have had some real conclusion. Why not making an Movie like they did for SG1? Same for SG:A, they didn't really finished the Series. Atlantis has landed on Earth, and then?

Firefly did it at least right with the solid Serenity Movie, great flick.  :)  I'm still waiting for something like that set in the Stargate TV Universe, also some conclusion for "Terminator SCC" and Visitors! Both ended with mean and evil cliffhangers.
McKay was annoying. -_-

Maybe just for you.  :p   I would had named SG:A also "The Rodney Show".  :D    Well, the other characters were also good, even if there was some coming and going during the series. The mentioned crossover episodes with SG:1 were also a nice touch. SG:U didn't had that much of these for obvious reasons. However, they had an awesome Spaceship. ^^

Crazy russian scientist?

Awesome spaceship?

More characters with more character development?

No McKay?

I don't know, why somebody should not love SG:U. :p

Some weird circumstances named "SyFy" took the franshice and decided to put the entire thing in stasis, leaving some poor fellow (representing the fans) behind to wonder if it's indeed the bitter end or just a huge setback.
Seems to me "Syfy" seems to have done that to an entire collection of excellent sct-fi tv series... I get the impression they kind of missed the point of having a sci-fi channel in the first place.

I think at one point they just droped the idea altogether. Last i heard, they barely even aired any real SciFi during the period when SGU was airing and eventually got canceled, mostly just re-runs of freaking wrestling shows out of all things.

I still live in hope that there'll be a Star Trek TV series based around the USS Relativity.

Shut up, and go watch Doctor Who! :p

By the time I heard about Firefly it was already canceled.
Same here, and now all we can do is imagine how things would have turned out.  If it was that good out of the gate it probably would have been amazing once the characters, 'verse, and ideas had been further developed and refined.

I also liked Alphas

and they did it to that as well.

@rygD, Well i think the timeline consistity you seek doesn't realy lay in the order in which you watch the episodes. I mean, each series was created with it's own agenda in mind. So if you ask me, i don't think stuff like time-travel or crossover episodes bring a worthwhile reason to stop watching and go watch that other spin-off which takes place closer to the events which the original series had just presented after the time-travel or crossover.
I have already seen nearly every episode of every series of Star Trek, some dozens of times.  I just wanted to try to follow some of the minor story elements (probably so I can tear apart the inconsistencies and BS like I already do, but I still love and enjoy the series for the reasons it is popular too).

or that episode where they stepped into an unstable whormhole that brought them back in time to the 70's and essentially into a timeline set before the original Movie.
YES!  Or "Window of Opportunity"

the Groundhog Day-esque episode
which really has nothing to do with our discussion other than being a temporal episode of sorts.  Then again, maybe it does, and perhaps my reason for wanting to watch them like that isn't unrelated to this:

I seem to remember how things kinda went a bit south for Sliders for similar reasons.  It was still good.  Maybe.  Less so after that, though, for sure.  Or was it that bad before?  I need to go pull out my DVDs and find out.

While we are on the subject, does anyone else like Defiance?  Or Falling Skies?  Or The Librarians?  Does The Librarians even really fit into science fiction, or is it fantasy?  Nevermind, I don't really like fantasy, so it must be science fiction.

 What crazy Russian scientist?
For some reason I remembered a Russian accent of Nicholas Rush. But obviously I was wrong. So ignore this point.
thats because Robert Carlyle   played rumplestiltskin in a tv show after this was canceled....

No, because I never saw that show.I think, I mixed him up with Dr. Radek Zelenka, which is a Czech (and not Russian again...)

That episode was legendary..

I think Sliders started alright, but eventually just became a bit too much. At one point i had the feeling they were pushing it way more than they should have.

Oh boy, sliders was terrible from the get go and rapidly went nowhere. It survived due to a dearth of sci-fi telly at the time imo; and the strange obsession with Jerry o bland connell.

Ive got stargate univertse on dvd, but once it was cancelled I didn't feel like watching it. I hate stories left unfinished. I may never watch it.

Battlestar galactica is the most mind blowing and awesome piece of telly or movie I have ever seen. Utterly, utterly superb. Intelligent, brave, truthful and ingenious.

Sg1 is great. I may re-watch it. Defiance is pretty good stuff. I like it and eagerly await season 2.

I wish for a new star trek set in the real universe. Not the jj kerching! abrams shite. Man I hated the last movie; Star trek into shite was so poor.

Then there was the Atlantis episode where they're chasing a Wraith in modern day Las Vegas - a completely different story line option in a parallel universe.  Was that the final SG: Atlantis?

I liked it a lot at the beginning and felt the first couple seasons were good.   Sure, some things were a bit silly, but it was still pretty serious in what was being discussed, as well as the overall feel.  It did start to get really silly near the end, but I stuck with it because things like that don't bother me much (although mostly horror, Tales from the Darkside is a perfect example, and I still love that show. ) Star Trek Voyager is a bit closer in feel to Sliders at the beginning (not just because they were both stuck/lost), and some of the SG-1 episodes above are like Sliders at the end.  Actually, SG-1 after they replaced most of the main cast is like Sliders after they did the same kind of thing.

I like a couple things Jerry O'Connell was in, and most things I have seen with him were fairly cheesy.  The other science fiction type show I remember with him was My Secret Identity or something like that.

Does anyone have any feeling either way about Revolution?  That is another one I like...no surprise.  Maybe I just like all science fiction shows.

I forgot to reply to this and don't feel like trying to edit my last post right now.

SG-1 is one of many shows I have and will watch over again.  I have a lot of it on DVD somewhere.

I liked the second season of Defiance.  It seemed less about the "hey, look how crazy the world is now, and all these crazy aliens and other things that you have never seen before".  They got even more into the characters' lives, which led to some interesting stuff.  I hope you like it.

I am one of thos Star Trek fans that will probably never accept the new ST films.  I don't consider them Star Trek.  They are inspired by it, and trashed pretty much everything that made the real thing great.  Only a variation on the look, and some very hollow representations of things are still present.  I wish that the real Spock had finished off with something else.  (An interesting thing, though, is that the movie This Means War includes 2 actors that depicted younger versions of 2 of the most popular ST captains.)

Yup, the original star treks only do it for me too. The original star trek and the next generation are my faves. Ive only watched some ds9, it's god in places and boring in places. Voyager is a mess and adheres rigidly to the next gens formula but is a poor caricature of that show. It needed to be tonally and somewhat thematically adjusted for freshness.-

I hate janeway and her silly sexist feminist crusade; it was absurd.

Enterprise was a good star trek, not great good. It was bursting with potential but braga and berman screwed it up storywise. The fourth season however is great. It's done by manny coto. Watch it if you have not.

I still dream of a Captain Riker show. Frakes is not too old for the part and it being a spin-off from the next gen would give it, initially at least, a large fanbase.

For me it was TNG and Voyager with the other 3 kinda taking second chair.  After I finished DS9 I came to like it more than Voyager a bit.  Borg episodes are always some of my favorites, and Voyager has those, and Enterprise has one.  I do like the cast of Enterprise (I used to be really into Quantum Leap and tried to catch it whenever it was on), and they did some good things with it, like explaining the different look of Klingons and bringing in Brent Spiner and giving more of Data's family tree's background.  Enterprise is, as you say, good.  I read a bit about some of the production crew and staff back when they were still filming and I guess during TNG-Voyager fans of the show that were a part of all of that were looked down upon and not trusted, even though some/many of the actors were fans (eventually, if not from the beginning, but a particular fan is why the character Guinan exists.).  Supposedly it was so bad that even fans that were well respected for what they had done had to hide their love, and could only come out to other fans or risk their job.  When it came to Enterprise the tables had turned and they were trying to get more fans involved to avoid messing it up.

I really like Frakes (however he looks funny and plain without a beard), and it would have been cool to get a movie with him as a Captain.  I don't think he would be interested in doing a Riker series.  You are right, he isn't too old.  He is a bit older now, but how old was Patrick Stewart when he started playing Picard?

Riker looked a bit...off in his appearance in the finale of Enterprise, and I think it was supposed to be on the D, but he should be fine later in the timeline.
Have Riker take over the Enterprise.  I think the E is my favorite (or maybe the Defiant).  Picard could come back *tugs down on shirt*, as an Admiral I suppose, and be right at home.

I think it was Michael Dorn himself that came up with the idea of a Captain Worf series.  I would really like that to happen.

I like to check out other stuff actors I like work on, and was a bit amused back when Gargoyles (which I have also enjoyed since it started) came out that a couple Star Trek actors were involved.  As it continued more were involved.  I remember Frakes and Sirtis, obviously, and then Mulgrew, Dorn and Spiner.  There were probably others. Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Gargoyles_cast_members#Star_Trek_connection

Oh, forgot to mention, I never really got into the animated series.  I saw a couple episodes decades ago, but never really tried to watch it all.  I grew up with TNG, so the ones from that era are sorta special to me.  The first couple seasons are a bit rough now, and I hate Troi calling Riker "Bill", but I even watch those.  Btw, I am watching the episode "Emergence" from TNG right now...
